Post by Carl_D on Aug 4th, 2004, 12:01pm and breakdancing...parachute pants...Madonna.... and I'll never forget the night my brother told me they were starting an all music channel at 1am. I had the channel on when it was still a test pattern...saw it fade... and the rocketship started to take off as you heard the theme music... the Birth of MTV with the prophetic song "Video Killed The Radio Star" by Buggles. Before MTV you could look like you just soaked in horse manure but people didn't care as long as they could rock to the music (and get it on!) Then Videos came out, and it was all about image, look, etc. What I hated was the fact that, prior to MTV, I could listen to music and my mind soared with visuals and dreams. Then when videos came out, it kind of erased that. Then, when you heard of a song, instead of your mind wandering into unchartered realms, you automatically thought of the video. Kind of killed imagination a bit. Videos also killed a few careers. For example: Billy Squier ROCKED! I sat down and learned every note of the Don't Say No album on guitar as a lad. Then, an awesome song came out called "Rock Me Tonight" and it was KILLED by his gay prancy striptease and generic tearing off of shirt, etc. Now everytime I hear that song I think: http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/23/23_4_152.gif Peace, Carl D |
