Monitor & mouse not included.  Mice were like $200 back then.  You typically needed a special interface card for them.

my first puter had 5 kilobytes of memory, and not just RAM, that included ROM, there was only 3.5 kilobytes of actual RAM.  Of course it was only 300 bucks, but that was alot of money for a 13 year old.

Heh heh heh!  Nothing to get, Love.  Just Samwise saying 'potatoes'.
Samwise is kewl.  Potatoes are kewl.  Thus Samwise + Potatoes == UberKewl.

My first "computer" was a Commodore Vic 20 back in 1985, I think.  Basically a graphics keyboard that you plugged into the back of your tv.  40 vertical lines resolution - 20k of memory - NO PERMANENT STORAGE DEVICE!  You either went out and bought books of programs or wrote your own.  I wrote a few dice and card games, mostly easy stuff based on limited random number generators.  Commodore Basic v.1.  You'd spend all damned day typing the program in and half the night debugging just to play a cheezy space invaders type game.  Then when you turned the thing off - poof! - program gone.  The next time you wanted to play, you entered it back in and debugged again.  I finally got a 3 1/2" disk drive for $250 so I could save my programs.

Gator

So, how many of you remember notching your 5 1/4" floppies and punching holes in 3 1/2" disks to make them store more data?

Uh, Gator, I usually use a bedpost for notching,
to each their own.

BTW...notching your floppie...wouldn't that hurt?

* Just givin' ya some grief.

Hell, my Atari 1400XL with cassette tape drive blows that POS away; and I still have it too! Along with my super hi tech MacIntosh SE30.

WoooHoooo. The Good ole glory days!

My first system was the Tandy TRS 80 with the very litle chiklet keys. 16K of memory with an added memory module to bring it up to a whopping 32K of memory.

I can relate with Gator here about staying up all night typing in Basic code and debugging it to play some game and then having it all goaway when when you turn it off.

I eventually started saving my data on a cassette tape player, then much later paid an unbelievable amount for a disk drive.

Gator... Do you remember Compute Magazine? That's where I got most of my code from and then started making changes to other peoples stuff and eventually learned how to program from trial and error.

I also DO remember notching my disks.
