She is not asleep because she's in coma, i repeat, she is NOT in coma! Doc's are KEEPING her asleep (giving her meds I think) to avoid others respiratory blocks. Title: Re: Zazi needs us more then ever folks Post by BruceD on Aug 5th, 2004, 9:08am Hi Guys, I sure don't want to leap to conclusions, but after reading through this thread & sharing it with my wife (ICU nurse), she had some words of comfort. Although it's tough to go on 2nd or 3rd or even 4th hand information, it's even tougher when that information transfers across language barriers. That said, Lisa wanted to offer the following information from her experiences: It isn't unheard of for young people (Zazi's age) to have some swelling/spasming or problem during extubation after surgery and that may have pushed her into respiratory arrest. That means they'd have re-intubated her (on the ventilator) to maintain her O2 levels. Lisa also said that it would be common if her blood gases were poor for the docs to keep her on the vent for a week to let her system stabilize. Lisa's unit routinely has patients in this state and under V&V sedation. (Vecuronium=muscle paralizer & Versed=sedative) This is to let the body heal and the patient have as easy a time as possible with the situation-afterall who'd want a tube shoved down their throat. I'd look for information as they start to wean her off the vent & we get more feedback from her blood gases. Of course, this is just an assumption based on the limited information that we've heard here ... but I like to think positively in cases like this. Still prayin' for ya' Zazi BruceD |

Thank you for keeping us all informed! I just wanted to give folks Lisa's perspective of the situation - from what an ICU nurse would see. Lisa doesn't see this as something dire, rather as a "normal" hitch that happens after some surgeries. This is one of those things that is easily managed, but is tough to go through because it just takes time for the body to heal. Thanks again BruceD |
