Title: New Effort At An Interview/Article
Post by Jeepgun on Jul 30th, 2004, 3:03pm
I just finished firing off the following letter to my local newspaper. Hopefully, some good will come of it...
_____________________________________________

To Whom It May Concern;

I was interviewed for the following article that appeared in
the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/04160/328352.stm

I don't know whether you would be interested in doing an article on cluster headaches, but if so, I would be glad to participate. One of the most hellish aspects of cluster headaches, is that they affect only .1% of the population, and physicians, neurologists, ENT doctors, and emergency room personnel are woefully uninformed about these headaches which have been characterized in medical journals as "suicide headaches." There is also a link at the bottom of this message that will take you to a site on cluster headaches, where you may read some accounts of what these headaches are like. These aren't "Uncle John's, migraines," or "Aunt Bessie's tension headaches." Cluster headaches have been classified as the worst pain known to mankind.

If you are interested in doing an article about cluster headaches, I may be reached on the weekend and during the evenings at ***-****, or during the day at ***-****.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
-Frank H. Weeden
(Cluster headache sufferer for 7 years)

Right on, man. I live in a little one-horse town with a crappy little newspaper, but some good may come out of it. We'll see... Thanks!

Why don't you fire it off to a newspaper in Nashville too? You'd get more exposure and may possibly be picked up by other news services.

Thanks! I just sent a copy to Paige Orr at the Nashville Post, as well, and mentioned the convention. http://www.nashvillepost.com

Sooner or later, someone is going to pick this up and run with it.

Just got off the phone with Paige Orr, who was so kind, and gave me some leads to some other newspapers. Apparently, hers is a business publication, but I'm now at the Tennessean's website, and I have another lead with The City Paper, so cross your fingers... :)

*rowing and rowing and rowing and rowing and...*

What the hell does it take to get any kind of reply from anyone? Grrrrr....  >:(

I just sent off another copy of my letter to someone at "The City Paper." I'm still trying to find an email address for someone at the "Tennessean."

If this doesn't work, then maybe I'll try the outlying areas like Murfreesboro, Antioch, etc.

I talked to the medical reporter at the Tennessean and I emailed him a BUNCH of info, but to no avail it seems.
I also told him about the convention and sent him info about our speakers, and I told him about the news segment. I am sorry Frank but I cant remember the Wally's name.
If you type in the word clusterheadaches in thier search engine...nothing/
I know they did a huge article years ago about botox curing cluster headaches and migraines. I sent the article to BobP when it happened. The guy they interviewed was Joe Catoe I believe. I tracked him down and called him, and he was indeed getting relief from botox. They were injecting him in the base of his neck.  The doctors office he was seeing here in Nashville
\gave me no help and wouldn't give me a script for o2.
I hope this info helps you a bit.

Thank you, Jayne. You rock! I just don't understand the reluctance of newspapers to do a story on this. I mean, the story practically writes itself, and from a journalistic standpoint, it's intriguing, dramatic, and something that the readership would have an interest in. If I were a journalist, I would be all over this like stink on.... er.... I would write an article on it.  [smiley=laugh.gif]

In any case, I have a hell of a lot of tenacity, so I'm going to keep plugging away at it. Sooner or later, someone will write an article, and then someone else, and then someone else, and little by little, like the snowball that starts an avalanche, the word IS going to get out.

Thanks again.

-Frank

You already answered your own question.

Quote:
is that they affect only .1% of the population

I wouldn't include that little tidbit in the next communication.

Look at the medical community......lots of them have never heard of CH either !

Education is a given.   Your idea is good, but unless you can find a news reporter, or someone in the media business, who has CH, then the response may be less than desired.

I am not suggesting that you give up, Frank.   Try and be patient.....we have CH and we know what it's like.  You will eventually find someone with a voice.

Thanks for the encouragement and the suggestions. I appreciate it. Turts, the reason you couldn't get through is because you have one of those weird Aussie phones, and the electrons in the lines "swirl" the wrong way.  ;;D 8)

BY the way Jeep, dont give up the effort. My reponse was meant to be constructive criticism.

Newspapers viewpoint.

"If it only effects .1% of the population then what % of my readership is included in the .1%? Screw that, one of the Hilton sisters is puking again, I'll run that headline"

Keep plugging away at it Jeep. I know how frustrating it is trying to get the medias attention. I went through hell back when I did OUCHFest trying to drum up media attention. Most people think I shaved my head before the event. Actually, I pulled it all out from frustration, anger, etc.
I had a deadline, but you don't. Keep plugging away, and try making connections with people from each publication you write. Build a relationship but above all - REMAIN VISIBLE! When they see how persistent you are, they will eventually break down. The squeaky wheel always gets the grease right?

Peace,
Carl D

I appreciate the suggestion, Don. You are correct. Thank you.

Right on, Carl. If I have the tenacity to slug it out with cluster headache cycles for seven years with no medication, the media's apparent lack of interest is only the most minor of bumps in the road. "I have not yet begun to fight."  ;;D
