Title: New Kid in Town Post by TomM on Jul 29th, 2004, 12:11pm There's a new kid in town. He transferred from a another department (legal assistant) @ my firm to my office (I.T.) a month ago. Super fellow. Quiet at times but very freindly. I worry that the more he gets to know me the less he will like me...naw...that's not possible. ;) Anywho...he told me yesterday he's a clusterhead! I shared this site with him and sent him a ton of info. He said he registered here but I do not know his login name. I'm still learning all the lingo, but I guess I'm an episodic sufferer. I get these headaches for about 6 weeks every 3 years on the nose. I'm headed to the doctor tomorrow to get som sort of treatment going this go- round; maybe you all could offer some advice. I've been diagnosed with cluster headaches by two seperate doctors. How can I be absolutely sure the diagnosis is correct? CAT scan, MRI? I would think that if I'm only getting these once every three years, it's pretty safe to assume that they are, indeed, cluster headaches. However, when I asked around on another site, I got these responses, which definitely make me second guess both myself and the doctors. damn dude. what does your doctor say? not trying to be a downer, but ever since my friend Kevin died of burst aneurysms early last year at age 32, I take my headaches so much more seriously now. he had a really bad headache that he tried to ignore, which quickly escalated. please get checked out if you can. get a cat scan. sounds like you're having a blood flow issue. what you've described is what killed a classmate of mine in highschool. any problem with your vision out of either eye as this is going on? Hey, thanks for the reassurance guys! I'll be sure to keep that bloodflow issue in mind tonight at 1am :P Secondly, the last time i was in my cycle I took Amerge. I think it has more of a Placebo effect than anything else. When I visit the doctor tomorrow, do you all have any advice as to what I should request? Tom seems to have had luck with Imitrex, and I'd like to give that a shot. Damn, sorry for the longwinded post. I just want to get all of my ducks in a line for tomorrow. The most popular/effective meds for the majority of people are... Preventatives; Prednisone taper while starting verapamil, 2nd choices, topomax or depakote... Abortives; OXYGEN! Imitrex injections or NS, zomig NS. Other abortives include frova, amerge, replax and a few others. They are all "triptans". A majority of us prefer O2 and imitrex injections though. Zomig runs a close second. Whatever you do, be sure and get a script for O2 with a regulator that can go up to 15 lpm! |

Go with the flow on this, because it keeps both you and your doctor on the safe side. Secondly, print out the medical link on the lefthand side on this site, and then using a Hi-Lighter, mark your specific symptoms. When you see your doctor, let him have the paper. This will not only give him a very specific idea of what you have, but treatment options and how CH treatment differs from what is effective in treating migraines. This place is a wealth of knowledge and support. A lot of people come and go and come back as their cycles start up again. Some stick around and provide continuity and help even when out of cycle. If you have clusters, rest easy... at least between attacks. Clusters will not kill you. They don't cause any permanent damage. That's the only decent thing about this horror. One way to test for clusters is: Do they wake you out of a sound sleep? Are they so painful that you can't sit still? Do they scarce the living shit out of you? You cannot lie down or rest durinig a cluster attack. Good luck with the tests. Neurological tests are not painful but look like something out of a Vincent Price movie. They ARE incredibly boring. If I told you all where I asked the question that elicited those responses, you'd laugh me out of here. (It has to do with my one, expensive hobby) Thomas: The thing is, I'm not sure I've had any luck with Amerge. It was prescribed to me three years ago during my last cycle. Wednesday morning, I woke up at 1:12 am. I knew exactly what was happening. I had hoped in the past I would get these headaches again, but the minute I opened my eyes I realized that it was starting again. I immediately ran downstairs and rifled through the medicine cabinet to find the Amerge. I popped one 2.5mg tab and waited. The attack lasted almost exactly one and a half hours. Thursday morning, 1:12am again (I wish I could wake up for work in such a timely manner :)) This time I decided to ride it out. Again, it was just about the same length. I am going to try it again tonight, this time with Amerge again, and see if there is any improvement. The headaches always get worse near the middle to end of the cycle, so I have a little time to experiment before I lose my mind. Charlie: That sounds about right. I don't think I've ever been able to sleep through an attack. Once they are in full swing I definitely feel like I'm going to die. Thank you all for the wonderful resource. Pat |
