Title: A new trigger ... and an old angel
Post by BruceD on Jul 21st, 2004, 3:05pm
Well, I just thought I should recount my post-Nashcon experience.

For those of you that had met us previously, you already knew that neither I nor my wife (Lisa) smoke. While I can usually handle being in a smoky environment, my wife really has a hard time handling it. We usually tried to position ourselves near the fringes of the group so that we could be part of the conversations without having too much second-hand smoke. So, we may not have gotten a chance to talk to everyone in any detail at the convention.

Anyway, this trip to Nashville was a dual one for us. We hadn't really celebrated our anniversary for the past 6-7 years because our youngest (daughter) was born on our anniversary. Anyway, I thought that I would surprise Lisa with a little get away on our trip back home to Wisconsin. I had arranged to stay at a beautiful Bed & Breakfast in Old Louisville on the way home. Lisa was wondering what I was doing when I turned off into a residential area in Louisville & especially when I started taking side streets like I knew where I was going. Anyway, to make a long story short ... I completely caught her off guard. :)

Well, our room was on the 3rd floor of an old 1884 Victorian Mansion ... up a loooong winding staircase. I hadn't had a hit in over 3 weeks so I decided that I didn't need to lug the oxygen tank up to the room. Duh ... I should have learned after the talk on Saturday told me that I was drain-bamaged. Well, the room had a huge whirlpool tub that we used Sunday night before going to bed. The hot water was a great relaxer after the long weekend, the post-convention blues, and the driving.

All was great until the beast awoke me at 2 am with its piercing grip on my left eye. I sat up in bed and couldn't do anything more than rock back and forth, moan, and pound my fist against my forehead. Lisa tried to move me, but I couldn't hear her ... so she ran down 3 flights of stairs, out to the van, and back up 3 flights of stairs with my O2. She hooked me up and got me sucking down O2 until the hit passed. After finally laying back down in bed & hearing Lisa settle into sleep, it hit me that she is more than I deserve. She's always there when I need her, and she ran down the stairs in the middle of the night in her "jammies" to get the O2 to bring me relief.

So, the weekend taught me that I have a new trigger ... a whirlpool with hot water ... and I have an old standby angel who sees me through everything that the beast can throw at me. Love ya' Lisa!

Thanks for listening
BruceD

I bet NashCon was hard on you two if smoke bothers you. I can't imagine anyplace where there would have been more. Yes when I was in cycle, warm humid air and relaxation was a trigger for me as well. I am glad you enjoyed Louisville. I was nice to meet you.

Hey Bruce,

I'm very sorry that you got hit, but I'm sooooooo glad that you have Lisa!! :)  You both are great for each other. :)

I was born in Louisville...nice place, huh? :)

Smoke really bothers me too (sorry, smokers!!)  I'm sure you feel the same way that it is something you will put up with to see everyone, though!!  I have allergic asthma to smoke, and I forgot my inhaler...oops!  I did leave dinner for awhile, but outside it was just fine. :)

As Bill (Racer1_NC) asked, I don't hold it against anyone! :)

And I've got some more nursing stories to share with you guys from today!!

Carrie :)

Heat not good.  Trigger cluster headache.

Acta Neurochir Suppl. 2000;76:541-5.

Selective alteration of calcitonin gene related peptide in hyperthermic brain injury. An experimental study in the rat brain using immunohistochemistry.

Laboratory of Neuroanatomy, Department of Medical Cell Biology, Department of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical Centre, Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden.

The possibility that calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) participates in the pathophysiology of hyperthermic brain injury was examined in a rat model. The CGRP immunoreactivity was examined in several brain regions of control and 4 h heat stressed rats using immunohistochemistry. Subjection of animals to heat stress in a biological oxygen demand (BOD) incubator at 38 degrees C for 4 h resulted in a marked redistribution of CGRP immunoreactivity. Thus, in cerebral cortex, hippocampus, cerebellum, medulla and spinal cord the CGRP immunoreactivity was profoundly increased following heat stress. On the other hand in brain stem and pons, the CGRP activity is downregulated. These observations suggest that heat stress has the capacity to influence CGRP immunoreactivity and this redistribution of the peptide is somehow associated with the molecular mechanisms of thermal information processing system of the CNS in heat stress, not reported earlier.

For normal animals, heat increases CGRP.  In clusterheads, heat is much more active.

Bruce/Lisa,

It was a real pleasure to talk to you both this weekend, you are a great couple.

Sorry about the smoke, big culprit here. Sorry that you were visited by the beast on honey moon night, but humidity and heat are always a big no-no for me too.

Take care.

Ozzy

PS. Thanks Floridian, CGRP, once again, eh?

Davenport, Iowa.....January, 2004.   An indoor atrium, bout 25 degrees outdoors.   Bruce and Lisa somehow made it thru, but for the life of me I don't know how.  LOL

I think someone told me when they left, they stripped their clothes off and changed to clean ones.

We had about 40+ clusterheads smokin and drinkin.

Bruce, sorry you got hit, sweetie.  You and Lisa are a precious couple.   Happy Anniversary to you!

It was so good to see you both again.

Hope you can stand another trip to Iowa, round about January, 2005.   BRING CHEESECAKE!!!  LMAO

Love you both,

Jean

Hi Bruce,

Sorry to hear you got hit on such lousy circumstances. Hope it was just the Beast playing its' games with ya and not a full blown cycle. Sending VIBES to ya. I know what you mean about the smoke. Cindy's alergic to smoke, yet I smoke like a chimney. I try to stay away from her as much as possible when i got smoke coming out my ears anyways. And you are very lucky to have Lisa as a supporter. Give her hugs for me.

Hey Bruce,

That was a beautiful story you painted (sans the CH). And Lisa, what a supporter you've got! Unfortunately, I too smoke like a chimney. I'll have to give them up though if they keep making my eyes water like this!

Awe Bruce sorry to hear about your ordeal but after meeting Lisa I know what a lucky guy you are...she is an angel.

btw, I stay VERY far away from hot tubs for that very reason...I've triggered some absolute monsters in those things.

Dang it man....dont that just figure... >:(

Methinks it wasn't the water but the lack of stress that was the trigger...

And of course Lisa was the trooper when it really matters...Congrats and condolances Captain.

I knew there was a couple others who didn't smoke. I did all right though and washed out two shirts in the bathroom sink. Tobacco and clusterheads seem to go hand in hand. Strange too as it's hard to prove a connection.

It wasn't the whirlpool that triggered. It was the relaxing that triggered.

Thanks for all the kind words. Yep, I do know I am tremendously fortunate to have Lisa as my wife, personal nurse, and supporter!

Carrie,
Louisville was absolutely beautiful! We walked around Central Park & on Monday went to Louisville Stoneworks & the Louisville Slugger museum. Fun place to visit!

Jean,
Yep it's true, we did change our clothes right after leaving Davenport. Luckily we drove the truck so we could put them in a garbage bag in the back.  ;;D Also, count on that cheesecake at Davcon05!!

Tracey,
You caught that about "jammies"? Well, let's just say that Lisa did throw something on before running out because if she hadn't it would have caused quite a ruckus.

Also, I don't really know if it was the hot water, or the relaxation. Either way, I figure I'll avoid the whirlpool for now. Heat has triggered me in the past ... especially if I'm riding in someones car who has the heater on high. Heck, in the winter I only use the defroster just enough to keep the windows clear ... gimme cold! Maybe it's a combination of heat & relaxation. Floridians link to CGRP makes sense with what Dr. Volcy was talking about on Saturday. Who knows for sure ... I'll just stay out of the whirlpool to be safe.

Take care
BruceD

What a guy Bruce.  Real nice, wifey Lisa instills them kinda nice thoughts in your head all the time I bet.  Don't you hate when uninvited beasts show up.  Jumpin' jammies!!
