Yep, the problem is really the operating system, grab This, (http://www.suse.com/us/index.html) or This, (http://fedora.redhat.com/download/) or This (http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/) Patch before you can't use the web anymore. I think this is going to happen sooner than anyone thinks. I feel sorry for anyone using AOL.

Paul, what do you mean- the OS? I think you're saying that a vulnerbility has been found that is found in every OS. That is SCARY! The patches you posted will do what? And I didn't see any patches for Opera, Mozilla, IE- yes I know these are browsers and not OS's. That's what I'm trying to get at. Have we got to address our OS instead of our browser?

whoops, this is a phishing attack, and yes Mozilla on Linux is venerable, unfortunately any OS can display such an attack, it's the vulnerability between the chair and keyboard that will get hit. I am almost thinking of only surfing the web in a special account, so that way all programs can be tested with out a risk to my data on my main account. Good thing Linux is a multi-user system.

My wife insists on using IE!
Just today, I had to come and change the security settings in IE for a secure web site she was trying to log on to(I've got the internet settings all the way up to high & change to trusted zone on a site by site basis.)

This afternoon I came across this: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1620253,00.asp

I know that some of you know a lot more about this than me. Should I take these steps and protect 'my computer' or my local zone?

Thanks Paul,

The first couple of times I went into the registry, I backed the whole thing up. After that, I simply backed up item by item when I had to edit the registry. I've long since deleted my registry back-ups.

I'll probably have to refresh myself, but shouldn't have any problem backing it up. Question: after creating a registry back-up, where would be the best place to put it or does it matter?

Win98 backs up the registry with every boot up. The backup is stored with a certain number of older ones on C:\. I assume that NT/XP is the same. You can backup the registry with a program from the run line ( I can't remember it though ) or go to programs\ system tools\ system information\ and there is a backup tool there. You can also save these to a floppy for safe keeping. To restore the registry you will need to boot in to DOS and run another program which I cannot remember, I use The Ultimate Boot Disk (http://www.startdisk.com/Web1/ubd/ubd.htm) for win98. There is probably a GUI repair tool when you boot from a XP install disk.
