Title: More Internet Trouble....
Post by Mark C on Jun 25th, 2004, 7:10pm
My Bank just shut down their Website...I suppose to preempt any infection. Folks, go and update you AV software and hit the Microsoft Update (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp) site....or better yet turn off the computer and go fishing till Monday. I heard even MS dosent have a patch till then, but I cannot confirm this yet.

Government and industry experts warned late Thursday of a mysterious, large-scale Internet attack against thousands of popular Web sites. The virus-like infection tries to implant hacker software onto the computers of all Web site visitors." (http://apnews.myway.com/article/20040625/D83E26M00.html)

Web infection may be aimed at stealing financial data (http://www.securityfocus.com/news/8983)

US-CERT is aware of new activity affecting compromised web sites running Microsoft's Internet Information Server (IIS) 5 and possibly end-user systems that visit these sites (http://www.us-cert.gov/current/current_activity.html)

Security researchers warned Web surfers on Thursday to be on guard after uncovering evidence that widespread Web server compromises have turned corporate home pages into points of digital infection. AV up to date- ran a scan- ok. Checked MS updates- I'm in good shape, unless the rumors are true. Is there a URL with more information on this?

Thanks Mark!  [smiley=thumb.gif]

Is GNU/Linux SuSE 9.0 running Mozilla with a firewall so tight Samba can't get out safe?

Companies still run IIS when Apache is free?

Don't mind me, I have been going crazy working on M$ Windows box, it's been reboot hell all day, too bad the hard drive is too small, I'd dual boot it for sure.

Root,
I wish, but it is for a user that never heard of Linux, let alone BSD, I changed some hardware and the software nightmare began. I managed to  get the drivers installed after the the tenth time. I will just leave MS windows on, less calls that way. It will go with a knoppix disc, but it won't run on the machine for some reason.

Thanks for the heads up MarkC!
However, after I read your post I (updated, of course) then went to CNet and found this:

http://news.com.com/Web+site+virus+attack+blunted/2100-7349_3-5248279.html?tag=cd.lede

Seems like we're relatively safe again??
Really appreciate the warnings though.
Please continue to keep us informed and safe!
Happy days to you
