Title: ER visit this morning Post by Lizzie2 on Jun 19th, 2004, 8:52am Hey gang, I just got home from the ER. :( I had been having some pretty nasty hits yesterday and for the past few days, but at 2:30 this morning, I woke up with a real banger. At 3:30, I went downstairs and grabbed an ice pack and some water and came back up here. Then by 5am, I'd tried all my abortives, but nothing was working, so I woke my mom up and she took me to the ER. I felt really bad for getting her up so early on a Saturday!! The doc in the ER was kinda interesting.... Kept asking me how I could have a headache for 3.5 years with no pain free time, and then how I would know that I got CH on top of that. Welllllllllllllll I'm sorry but CH IS just a "little" different from chronic migraine!! Sheeeeeeeesh. Then he said he'd never heard of a CH'er taking lithium. I kinda just stared at him (head hurt too much to argue), and he said, "I sense that you think it is pretty common..What are you in, a support group?" I said yes online. My mom later yelled at me for saying that because she said it makes me sound like a "wacko." heh...... Ah well, I got some meds to bring it down. It felt different than my normal migraine or CH, so I dont' know for sure what was going on. I did have the stabbing pain through my eye and right temple, and that radiated down to my upper and lower jaw, but it just felt different for some reason. Besides the fact that it was longer than a normal CH for me! At any rate, I feel much better now. I wish ER docs could be more informed about all headaches, especially CH. I really wasn't in the mood to inform him about how it really is with my head about ready to explode off my body. I never remember the drive to the hospital I used to work at being so long before!! We'll teach them some day, eh? Hugz, Lizzie |

Title: Re: ER visit this morning Post by Opus on Jun 19th, 2004, 9:54am Lizzie, Did you had nausea and did movement make it worse but you couldn't stop? I get Cluster/Migraines once in a while, they last for hours and are unabortable. The pain is unlike CH or migraines. What did they give you to finally abort it? Opus/Paul |

I was "HotStuff".... ;) Paul, may have been a cluster migraine? Movement didn't make it worse, but the pain was ungodly and the nausea was there. None of my abortives worked. They wound up giving me a combo of toradol, compazine, and benedryl. Not sure which in there helped. Dropped it down to about a 5, and I left. Ehhh for me, I'll take a 5! I know toradol alone wouldn't have kicked a CH, so it just may have been the combination. Glad to be feeling a little better at least!! Lizzie |

And when you tell them what you need they look at you like either you're a druggie or you're nuts. ::) I hope you didn't have a cluster/ migraine, I wouldn't wish those on anyone, except stupid hospital staff. Glad you're doing better this a.m. :) pd |

Title: Re: ER visit this morning Post by Kevin_M on Jun 19th, 2004, 10:31am Lizzie, The Headache and Migraine Institute that I go to now, has a phone number to call if I am ever admitted to ER. I give it to the ER doctors and they call the institute physician who is on call that evening. I think it is a good idea to avoid problems at ER. I've never used it but I think it would help people in that situation. I think it is a good step toward better service or getting an ER doctor who isn't familiar with your personal situation. Things like this are a good improvement toward ER horror stories. Kevin M |

Title: Re: ER visit this morning Post by Redd715 on Jun 19th, 2004, 10:40am I actually have a note I keep in my wallet that me specialist had typed up for me explaing the situation. If I need to go to the ER I can hand it over and get proper treatment...(I hope). It says right in there that sometime the imitrex shots don't work and I may need aditional medication to treat the attacks. Haven't had to use it...yet...so we shall see. |
