well folks I'm bored so here is a topic for debate...

Football, rule enforcement...The league (NFL) has officially declared closer enforcement of the "chuck" rule...specifically the illegal contact rule that keeps defenders...usually cornerbacks and safeties from impeding the progress or routes of the recievers. This is an attempt to make the game more exciting and to help improve the passing game overall. There are reasons for this move....namely the New England Patriots. Sorry "pats" fans but ya gotta admit it. There were many complaints throughout the league about the Patriots secondary regularly holding and using illegal contact on pass plays....I personally saw it happen when they played the Dolphins last season, and throughout the playoffs. It was so blatant that it was called by the commentators on several occasions, officially complained about by the Colts, and commented several times by the Ram's coach martz....

here is the basic rule...

. A defensive player may not tackle or hold an opponent other than a runner. Otherwise, he may use his hands, arms, or body only: (a) To defend or protect himself against an obstructing opponent.

Exception: An eligible receiver is considered to be an obstructing opponent ONLY to a point five yards beyond the line of scrimmage unless the player who receives the snap clearly demonstrates no further intention to pass the ball. Within this five-yard zone, a defensive player may chuck an eligible player in front of him. A defensive player is allowed to maintain continuous and unbroken contact within the five-yard zone until a point when the receiver is even with the defender. The defensive player cannot use his hands or arms to push from behind, hang onto, or encircle an eligible receiver in a manner that restricts movement as the play develops. Beyond this five-yard limitation, a defender may use his hands or arms ONLY to defend or protect himself against impending contact caused by a receiver. In such reaction, the defender may not contact a receiver who attempts to take a path to evade him.

here's the debate: "will stricter enforcement of this rule, level the playing field for offenses or create larger disparity between player in "skill" positions?"

what...no takers? C'mon guys grow some balls...I'm bored ;;D

Here I'll start ya off... the reason this rule is so important all of the sudden is because overall passing yards were down throughout the league. Stricter enforcement will only make defenses that much weaker than they already may be...everyone knows the rule that "no whistle, no foul".
That being said....players such as Randy Moss, Terrell Owens and Isaac Bruce along with a few others will pretty much be roaming free downfield with less opposition to challenge their already dominant skills. Couple that with a real good quarterback and yer done....you may score at will. Good solid cornerbacks and safeties are at a low within the league right now even though defense has become the immediate desire all around and scoring pass plays will become more frequent....exciting yes but it undermines the fundamentals as defenses will have to take extra time and care to make sure contact is legal in a full contact sport. Players are taught to play should be allowed to play the man or the ball to whatever situation arises. I dont expect to see stricter enforcement of this rule lasting much past pre-season. Let the boys play.

Are there no Bitter Colts fans or other Patriot opponents to challenge me??? Speak up! :D

Ramon,

it won't necessarily make defense weaker. Just change your strategies. If you put a couple of reciever types on defence you may be able to pick off more passes. The rule is designed to stop pass interferance and the blantant fouls that can't be called out because there is no rule against them. Yes in some cases you get the unnecessary roughness but many times you can't make that claim.

I personally think it will make the game more exciting.

Juvy, While I would like to share your optimism, stricter enforcement of this rule is not going to improve things much....were talking coverage ability here. There arent going to be any recievers playing corner....they are recievers and kick-off/punt returners. Coaches who have dominant quarterbacks and recievers are already chomping at the bit about the opportunity to open up their vertical passing games.
Its going to be sick...this season, passing yards will be at an all time high and Good defensive backs are going to be floundering all over the place. If the leauge is going to enforce the rule more regularly....they better make sure they call the offensive pass interferance equally as tight. Thats all I'm trying to say. Offensive pass interferance is called faaaaaaar less often than it should be. :)

OK, I'm bored to death too.

I don't want to see more pass interference calls. There's already too many... some are absurd... offense already has too much advantage. It's making football pussified. The games will not become more exciting as the score differential increases (i.e. runaway offenses)... instead, games will become more exciting when touchdowns are hard-fought and won (i.e. strong defense).

NFL, please learn from the horrible mistakes of the NBA... where the last 2 minutes takes an agonizing (and un-watchable) 30 minutes to play due to 5 to 8 timeout's (per team), huge numbers of needless fouls, and where petty clock-stopping nitpicking ruins the finish.

How was that? ;;D

For those of you who are less refined in the verses of NFL football....the rule is basically going to severely hinder the defenseability of the "Bump and Run". ya guys are still going to get beat off the line of scrimmage but that will increase on the defensive side of the ball with cornerbacks and such becoming gunshy for fear of penalty. JMO.

I agree with the attempt by the league. However, I dont think that by thier being more penalty flags that the game is going to move along faster or that all the sudden teams are going to score more. I personally like the hard defensive games.

Being a Chiefs fan...it pains me to agree with pretty much ANYTHING a raider fan has to say ;;D ;;D ;;D however, I DO agree, defensive battles are the best and most fun to watch. The Raiders made very good offseason moves to bolster a struggling and aging D. The addition of Warren Sapp was an outstanding strategic judgement. Denver trading Clinton Portis for Champ Bailey I believe is a fatal mistake....Denver ranked in the top 5 on defense last season, Portis ran up and down the Chiefs defense almost at will (every year).....trade the ability of Portis for a few more interceptions? I dont think so.....the Skins got the fat end of that deal.
The Chargers will be interesting.... Thomlinson is always a threat...havent heard much about their off season activity. Point is Defense wins championships....everyone in the league is after big time Defensive players, coaches and schemes. Its what got Carolina to the superbowl as well as the Pats, and the Ravens a few years ago. This Rule sucks azz and will detract from the defense we love so much. I dont care how long a football game is....it could be a 10 hour event and I dont think true fans of the game would care.
But dont detract from the beauty of the game by putting too many limitations on one side of the ball.

Hey Ramon, thanks for the topic.

I couldn't agree with Steve more wholeheartedly. I fear that the NFL will go the route that the NBA did. Gotta give the fans more scoring at the price of making a game boring. I actually remember back when I used to enjoy watching pro basketball as a kid ... prior to the 3-point line. You had teams that had to work on both sides of the ball. Now I cannot even stand to watch a NBA game anymore - just gotta run & gun. Or even worse ... make a half hearted attempt to back the ball in down low before kicking it outside for the trey ... boring!

The new rule is simply to try to make the game "more exciting" for the average fan ... that is the fan that doesn't know details of the game. It's far too easy for the casual fan to get pumped up about how glorious their offense is when your receivers seem to run perfect routes for big yards - easier to do when the DB has to give more room. What's next, QBs wearing red shirts so they can't get hit. That'd increase yards & scoring for sure. Heck, while we're at it why not only allow 8 on defense ... and you've gotta gun a 3-count delayed rush.

Unfortunately, no professional sport is immune from the dumbing down of the rules. Afterall, today is more about the dollars than it is about the game.

Eddie George a Raider? hrmmmm could be if AL has some cap room for him....wouldnt that be interesting. Although I personally believe Tyrone wheatley getting more carries would open the game up a bit for the Raiders...but Hey, if ya can get em get em.
The return of Barry Sanders would be great for the game...too bad it'll never happen.

Oh no you are mistaken my brother....I am NOT! a Bear fan. The Patriots are coming to KC to meet the real kings of the AFC this year. Our Defensive Guru is back in the saddle I do not think our secondary will be nearly as pourous as last year. Lest we forget....KC has led the league in scoring and turnover margin two years in a row....we're shootin for three and gonna take the lombardi trophy back where it belongs.....GO CHIEFS!

It's about time.
Hell the Patriots are THE biggest offenders of illegal contact on receivers in the league. They damn near molested the Rams recievers when they played in the Super Bowl several years ago.
I'll be glad that they're finally going to start calling this and cut out the muggings these wideouts are taking.
