Title: New survey (non ch)
Post by Donna H. on May 30th, 2004, 8:40am
Question:

Why do dogs chew only one shoe from each pair?

Edited after reading the next four posts:

You need to know that this little Beagle steals wash cloths..kitchen and bathroom, and chews them in the living room where I can see her.  When I scold her, take it away and commit her to her little pen for 10 minutes, she comes out and does it again.  She has just cut out the middleman.....she got the kitchen washcloth by some olympic jumping and took it directly into her pen.  Now what?  Sure, move the wash cloth.....I do that until I just forget.

She has toys of every texture but prefers to tip my hamper and get the socks out.

When I call her, she looks at me and walks in the other direction.  She's smart enough to know what the words "cookie", "outisde",  the cats name and "Mommys home" means, but not "come here".

Her only excuse is that she's an independent, stubborn Beagle,  whom I love with all my heart.

They are trying to be polite and leave one for you!  :)       Seriously, they like your scent and feel closer to you. Our dogs have bones to chew on.  And when they are outside, thay make mulch, by chewing on sticks. We always took up our shoes when they were puppies, and now they don't chew on our shoes or socks. Just each other. ;)

It is a well-kept secret that canines are the keepers of the
Lost Sock Universe
(You know, the place where one sock from each pair disappears to when you do the laundry).

Being (Wo)man's best friend, the animal is conveying to you that you no longer have a need for that particular shoe, as the corresponding sock has already been teleported from your laundry room.

So, check your laundry (for missing sock), Hug the dog and thank it for the "heads up".  Your dog will make a public apology for the shoe by dragging your unmentionables into the living room when you have company....God Bless the little darlin's!!

Hey, got a better explanation?  It could happen!!

I either need to sleep more or to drink less....

Sigh. You can borrow one of my doggies. They tend to chew the inserts and any tags or ties off the shoes...both of them...

Everybody knows it's because dogs are never  ambidextrous. Gee whiz.  ::)

Seriously, they chew the one with the oldest Odor Eater. ::)

Wiley creatures they are and they probably do it just  to watch us think about this kind of thing.

Donna,
Your cute little doggy is trying to get your attention. She  knows when she has that stuff, you'll pay attention to her, even if it's to scold her. Keep the socks, etc out of her reach, get some of those little chew sticks from the pet store, they are rawhide twisty things, not too big for your dog. When you catch her, take away the whatever, give her a chew stick and praise her lavishly as soon as she starts chewing on it. Don't say anything about the other. If you happen to catch her right when she's going for it, say "leave it" and give her a chewstick ands praise her. The main thing is to not react when she's got the wrong thing, only when she has the right thing. There are toys at the pet store you could put a few treats or pcs of dry food in to keep her busy. This should help. If she's not using her toys, you may want to try something different. We had toys for our dogs and some they just never were interested in.

You're lucky yours chews socks and shoes...

My two little darlings (mini-pin and mini-daushand -- neither weighs 10 pounds) go HUNTING and bring home their prey to Mama. We get fresh kill almost weekly. And they're so proud of bringing mommy presents.

Try waking up at four in the morning to 2 little dogs sitting over a BIG squirrell that they've just killed and brought thru the doggie door.

Last present was a rabbit -- blood drug across the living room carpet cause they wanted to bring it to the bedroom.  The little darlings had to work all night to get that thing thru the "little" doggie door.

But, as you said, we love the little things and just thank them and clean up the mess, do without the darn shoes and socks and pat them on the head.

My little Rudy is on "baby nap duty" right now. He's watching the baby sleep (and taking a nap right beside him). It's a hard job, but he does it without complaint. ;)
