Title: I'm just wondering.....
Post by Roxy on May 26th, 2004, 10:35pm
why some people wait until they try all kinds of meds before they try 02.

Even if you can't get a prescription for the 02, you have the option of using welding 02.  It's the same thing, and it is safer for you than many of the meds that people take.

I filled three huge H tanks today....it cost me $49.  Three H tanks can hold the worst chronic for quite awhile.

Just a big heads up for the new people here.....try the 02 before, or along with the meds you take.  It sure can't hurt, and is cheaper than the triptan drugs.

Not willing to set myself up for more critisism, but in my case I do not have the support of my husband to use Welders O2. So until I get a script, I can only use the meds that I am perscribed.

Tia,

Is that the cost of the fill and the tanks combined?

Roxy, I've often wondered the same thing. I think it's possible that some folks find it hard to believe that something as simple as breathing pure o2 can work, especially if they have been suffering for a long time before finding this site or a good doc. And, let's face it, this is pretty much a take-a-pill society so any treatment that doesn't involve medication will probably have a hard time gaining acceptance. It still amazes me the number of posts I see about doctors, including neuros, who refuse to prescibe o2.

I can understand the reluctance to try it, but only to a point. Like you said, it sure can't hurt. I know I was taking different meds before I found this site and got on the o2 properly. Then I quit taking meds completely and battle the beast with o2 alone.

So newbies, do what Roxy said, hit the o2 link! It's a gas!  ;;D

got my fingers and toes crossed for ya daffy. Glad you have a doc open-minded enough to listen to you and actually check out the information available here. The more who know, the better. Good job!

Please let us know how it works for you.

I'd be inclined to think this is not really the fault of the Clusterhead ... probably never even heard of CH until after years of misdignosis. Then, once the doc or neuro discovers it's CH ... it is they who are uneducated and throw all kinds of experimental meds at the sufferer.
(Sound familiar?)
Once they know what they have and find us here, might be the first time they hear about the O2?
All the more reason to join up with OUCH and help try to educate the medical field all the more.
Just some thoughts,
Dave

I'm with you Roxy. If it works (80% is the success rate isn't it?) it is the best thing ever.

I also personally believe that the action of putting on the mask and controlling the breathing in itself helps. For me it stops that terrible panic which makes the agony all the worse. I feel better that I am DOING something. Taking a drug and waiting for me is far worse, and I don't like the after effects I get from triptans.

Well posted!

Wendy

P.S. Sssshh, don't tell anyone I said the 'M' word, but I use it to abort bad migraines as well.

Me too, who in the hell would want to pump all that toxic crap into themselves, if just breathing O2 would help.  I've tried it, didn't work well for me.  But would suck on O2 before I shot trex anyday. ;;D

Wendy, that really surprises me that 02 works for your migraines. I have told a couple of people about how 02 knocks my clusters in about 10 minutes. They wondered if it would help their migraine. I have had two different people come by the house and try it during a bad migraine and after 20 minutes they gave up, Didn't help at all.
I have often wondered about that since Triptans work for both, whyy 02 didn't. Glad to know it helps for both types of yours.
Speaking of migraines, I have always had headaches on the right side (my clusters always come on the left) and just took otc meds and they usually would eventually go away. But sometimes after a few hours they would get worse.
The other day, after about 6 ibuprophen and it still was there, I broke a zomig in half and took it. 45 minutes later it was gone. A few days later I had another one and took the other half, and it went away in about 30 minutes. I realized these were migraines and I didn't even know it. Compared to clusters I just thought they were regular ones.

Nice thread,

My gp never prescribed it.  When referred to a neuro, he liked to experiment with anti-seizure drugs and anti-depressants.  Quit seeing the neuro and went back to gp for years until the cycles kept getting worse with no effective prevent and he laughed at the suggestion of O2.  This year now seeing new neuro on my own, no referral.  She got me on verap and O2.  Guess it depend on the doctor we rely on.
After reading here and prolonging cycles with too much triptans, I began asking.  Simply getting a script for oxygen didn't mean I was prescribed the right flow, non-rebreather mask,  or humidifier.  Some royal advise here on the board gave me info on what works and even sent me a non-rebreather.  I didn't know crap about getting the right combination of things that make it work but read about it here and found my neuro was not a real genious about oxygen.  It WAS hard getting all the right pieces in place and finding a company who could deliver the right goods.
The welding idea is great info to pass on to people to avoid a lot of headaches dealing with oxygen companies, though I know the welding way is being used by a few.  I am not familiar with dealing with welding supplies but will someday learn that refinement too.  I could dig doing it that way.

Kevin M

*edit*  Oh, and found out it works for me too, at 12Lpm!!!
