just found out that the reason why there is constant pain.. neck shoulders arem.. c4-c5 herniated disk..

already have fusion c5-c7..

any ideas for different kinds of therapies for this other than fusion....

This may be why been having so many CH?????

I have that also same area plus alot of other CRAP goin on where you had fusion (also lower spine is a mess).....my doc sudgested massage theropy along with pain meds if needed ( everyone has a different stand on that issue "I know" ).......I've known too many people that have had back surgery and then areas below or above go bad within a year or three. Chest pains can be included in all this shit for that area and it sucks.........why does ridein in or on a vehicle seem to hurt the MOST ? At nerves end Pam

Dunno about the effect of that on CH, but dude, ya gotta get that looked at...I'm pretty sure surgery is the only way to correct it on a more permanent level.

Well supposidly a herniated disc will go back somewhat normal 'with care' in time after so many weeks.....but once they do that they will always be prone for it. Like a blown out end of a balloon that never goes back TOTALLY normal. So it will reoccur. Don't think they do surgery for all herniated disc's tho cuz they can go back normal or less buldge causeing less pain with about 6 weeks takein it easy if I remember correctly. (from what I have been told and read up on) I sure ain't no expert tho. I can always tell when mine is flareing back up again (which is quite often these days).......the nurse told me they are what I call flareups. Takein it totally easy isn't in my program for long. I rather doubt this would be the cause of CH tho.......

Athos, listen to me now and hear me later.
Exhaust ALL of your options before you let them cut on you. Back surgery can be very risky my friend.
I had disc surgery (microdiscectomy) in '96 and it was the worst move of my life. I thought I had done my homework and found a good surgeon and a top hospital but it all turned to shit in a hurry.
I still have chronic back & leg pain and numbness from my foot to butt due to them cutting on the sciatic nerve.
I had another MRI last year and now the disc above the "surgically repaired" one is herniated. An Ortho and Neuro have both said they could fix me up but as bad as it is another surgery is not an option.

Athos,

I'm kinda in the same boat. I have 2 herniated discs, c2-3 and c3-4 with bone spurs. I opt not to be cut on because of the wear and tear of the discs just above and below the fusion which would result in needing more surgery.

I also know that the worse my neck is the more my ch bothers me also.

Here is what i've done and it seems to have helped.

1. I got 3 epidural steroid injections over a course of several months to decrease the inflammation in and around the herniations last year and that helped with the neck and the ch for a couple of months.

2. I now take flexeril (muscle relaxer) at bedtime each night and that keeps the muscle tightness down and thus the ch does not feed off of the tight neck anymore.

3. I also take an anti-inflammatory to keep the inflammation down. I take this daily also.

My range of motion is much better since getting on the flexeril and so is the ch, neck, shoulders and arms.

I dunno. It's a toin coss. Cut now or cut later. Sometimes the magic works, and sometimes it doesn't. Tis a terrible thing going thru the rest of yer life asking "Got any Perc's, man..." It's another club ya don't wanna join.

Same boat here - three disks herniated twenty years ago, and with age there is degeneration (ain't that the truth!). Mine are my lower back L3/4, S1. I had one of them surgically removed 4 years ago (and spine fused). Within a year, another one need to be cleaned up with a diskectomy. Last summer I went though the epidural steroid injection like Renee mentioned. It helped for a number of months. For the past two weeks, I have been in constant pain, and the sciatic nerve is so inflamed, that I will probably require an additional surgery. I can truly relate to what you are going through. Best to go with the least invasive route first - you can always have the surgery later. Try the epidural - they give you good drugs.
