Title: Sleep advise.. please any insight would be great
Post by Tiannia on May 18th, 2004, 5:08pm
OK I reread this and it does nto make sense.

Here is my questions. I literally fell asleep while talking to someone here at work. Would the meds I am on be making this happen or is there something else that I should be looking at?

I usually get hit twice a night with HA. One about 11 and one about 3am.  They keep me up for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

I also have degenerative disks in my lower back L3-4 and L4-5 with moderate muscle damage. I have lost 20% of the movement in my back due to the injury. I can not lean to the right or back.  Lately, I have found meyself getting more and more tired and if I even blink  long I fall fast asleep.  Even in the middle of talking to someone at work.  I have found this to heppen quickly ont he road as well. I wake up quickly it is not more then just a few seconds, but it still scares the hell out of me.

I am still on medication for bronchitis and a major med for expectorant and decongestant.  This was not listed as a side effect but could these in conjuction with the oxycodone I have for my back be making this happen.

There are peole who really understand meds and even though the docs know what meds I am on, I dont think they really think about this.  Please help.

For my back I take
Oxycodine 5mg up to 5 times a day (usually take one in the am as soon as I get up because I am stiff as hell and the other 2 are after I get home and before I sleep.
Soma 2 times a day - Take these during the day as I prefer these to Pain killers during the day
Tequin This is the new med they gave me last Wed to try and get me over this bronchitis I've had for 8 weeks.
Guaifenesin 600 mg - Expectorant

Have you talked to your doctor about narcolepsy?

Man, no wonder you can't stay awake during the day. Being up for at least 3 hours during the night, every night is enough to be sleepy all day. Then when you add your meds, I don't know how you make it without falling asleep everytime you get still
I used to get hit 3 times a night and took 02 and would only be awake , say 30 minutes at a time, and I walked around during the day half asleep, and I was not on any meds.
I can't help you, but I sure can understand why you are tired.

Since this is new and you started on Tequin last week I have to say hmmmm.

But I really don't know.

Gatifloxacin
Pronunciation: gah the FLOCK sah sin
Brand Names: Tequin, Tequin Teqpaq

A little copy & paste from above link.

Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. Move away from Henderson. Although it has not been reported with the use of gatifloxacin, other similar medicines have increased the sensitivity of the skin to sunlight. Severe sunburn has resulted, even with minimal sun exposure.
Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Gatifloxacin may cause dizziness. If you experience dizziness, avoid these activities.

I worked night shifts with a dude and he developed this thing where he would fall asleep at the drop of a hat.  I mean, he would be in the middle of a sentence and fall off to sleep.  He went to the doc and they diagnosed sleep apnea after doing a sleep study on him.  Put him on a breathing apperatus, don't recall what it is called, basically on O2 all night.  Also, he was seriously overweight, so they put him on meds to help with that.  The oxygen and losing weight seemed to help him.

If it's not the meds, then maybe it could be apnea.  This is too serious to screw around with.  Wouldn't want to fall asleep in the car.  We need you around here too much.

Peace be with you

Gator

Check the side effects.. OC's if they are like percs or viks, they probably cause drowsiness.

Start with asking your pharmacist to give you a complete printout of all the side effects of the meds you are taking.  Then ask her/him to review any possible interactions between them.

I too have problems with my back.  I've taken Soma.  It makes me very sleepy (I call it the Soma coma).  All decongestants can cause sleepiness.

Tequin is a strong antibiotic.  Almost all antibiotics make my feel so tired all the time.  I've had to pull over on the ride home from work while taking them because my eyes would not stay open!

All these meds, the bronchitis, and getting hit with the beast every damn night....sounds like your body is getting the rest it needs when it can, with or without your consent.  How about taking a few days or even a week off of work and give yourself time to heal?

Hugs and Huge PF Vibes,
Kate
