Title: Puff the magic dragon...
Post by catlind on May 7th, 2004, 12:04pm
Ok so how many of us have quit smoking?

a) What have your results been?
b) What did you use to keep you going?
c) What reinforcers did you use to get through the rough ones?
d) M/F?
e) Head better or worse?
f)  tips, tricks and techqniques?

So far I've quit 2 weeks and my headaches are well under control if not completely gone. and that would be both migraines and clusters.

I used the Ricola breath mints sugar free and a hospital stay to get through my first 72 hours  :-[  Is that cheating?

Cat

Two weeks, one day, 16 hours, 56 minutes and 26 seconds. 314 cigarettes not smoked, saving $47.12. Life saved: 1 day, 2 hours, 10 minutes.

Haven't had a smoke since Jan 12.   I use nicorette gum, chew about 4-8 pieces a day.  My motivation has been an improved quality of life, I want to play golf with my best friend every day when I am 70, not be in a pine box.  As far as the head goes..... out of cycle right now.

a) What have your results been?
This is the 2nd time I quit after being quit for 1yr and 4 months (started up again due to cluster cycle last July)  I have now been quit again since March 11, 2004.

b) What did you use to keep you going?
This time I used "Smoke Away" (all natural), Tea Tree Chewing sticks (toothpicks soaked in tea tree oil) and sugar free bubble gum.  Last time I used the previous (except the Smoke Away), plus cinnamon sticks and LOTS of sunflower seeds.

c) What reinforcers did you use to get through the rough ones?
I learned to make a post, on a quit smoking support website, before going out to light one up.  Or I'd hit my 70lb weight bag I have hanging in the basement.

d) M/F?
Guess ;;D

e) Head better or worse?
During my cycle, I noticed that without meds, I couldn't handle my attacks without sucking a cig down in 2 min. right before the pain would ramp up.  Now I'm not afraid I'll start back up again, because I have a supply of meds.

f)  tips, tricks and techqniques?
Listed above.

:)mel

edited to add, as for my head being better or worse, I couldn't tell ya, cause I'm episodic.  BUT, I did notice my attacks felt more severe not smoking, than when I did smoke.

I quit smoking almost a year ago. I noticed an improvement in the amount of clusters and the severity in general. I had a couple of relapses for a few days and the headaches picked up again. For me quitting tobacco really helped.

Roxy when your having sex don't those cinnamon toothpicks burn?  Or at least get in the way? ;)

Stand Back---I went three (3) whopping days! Sucking on phenyl-barbitol during the day, Xanex at night.

Yes folks I know it's hard to believe--72 hours--yeah right. But I'm not kidding you. On the fourth day my gal-pal Susan invites me out to hang with her friends and some pub and neglects to tell me they're all 6 female and all 6 smoked. Plus, the babe factor was an easy 75% which would make 4, 4 vunderful vomen---(picturing the count on Sesame Street) I was drinking some cold fake beer and this, along with the smoke wafting in the air,  was just too much to take.

I think I just lost some muscle mass....

grrrr.....

Still smoking....

but last time I quit:

Charms lollipops
Tootsie pops
Inhaling with a mini/baby carrot (really helped psychologically)
Zyban for 2 weeks before and the first 4 days after I quit

For me, quitting was almost all psychological and hardly any physical cravings.

Hope that helps someone....

a) What have your results been?   Have not smoked in almost 8 years
b) What did you use to keep you going?  I quit because I got pregnant and I was not going to cause harm to my child because of my bad habit.  After I had my daughter, I really wanted to light up again, but I knew that it had nothing to do with the nicotine at that point.  I just wanted  a break fro stressful situations and going outside to smoke provided me with that break
c) What reinforcers did you use to get through the rough ones? I chew Wriggleys juicy fruit alot. I also have toothpicks everywhere. At work, by the computer, in the car.  I chew on tookthpicks as it gives me something in my mouth and I dont think about it not being a cigarette
d) M/F?   At least you did not say SEX?  Roxy would have to say yes. yes. yes and oh yeah yes ;;D
e) Head better or worse? As I did not get these until last year, I would have to say worse
f)  tips, tricks and techqniques?  Toothpicks, gum, chew on ice. Anything to get you used to having something different then a cig hanging out of your mouth

a) What have your results been?
Results are excellent:
Two months, one week, six days, 16 hours, 44 minutes and 26 seconds. 2947 cigarettes not smoked, saving $515.59. Life saved: 1 week, 3 days, 5 hours, 35 minutes.

b) What did you use to keep you going?
Zyban for 7 days before quitting then continued on that for 1 month...then quit (sick of taking pills)

c) What reinforcers did you use to get through the rough ones?
My desire to NOT get esophageal cancer.  Also reading the whyquit.com site and seeing what the smokes do to you.

d) M/F?
can't remember (side effect from lack of nicotine)

e) Head better or worse?
ummmmm...my 8 month cycle stopped the day I quit smoking...coincidence??

f)  tips, tricks and techqniques?
toothpicks, hard candy, nuts

I've really been feeling great for over a month now, working out, etc.  Before quitting you'd not find me NEAR a gym :)

I quit smoking COLD TURKEY in Feb 1996 after smoking 2-3 packs a day for almost 18 years.  I had developed pneumonia.  One lung full, one lung half full.  Damned near killed me.  When I was better, I tried to smoke a cig and puked my guts up.  Haven't smoked since.

a) What have your results been?

Breath easier.  Sick less.  Saved tons of money.  Breath no longer smells like an ashtray.  Gained a lot of weight.

b) What did you use to keep you going?

Will power.

c) What reinforcers did you use to get through the rough ones?

The thought of puking (I'd almost rather die than yak) and catching pneumonia again.

d) M/F?

Male

e) Head better or worse?

Hadn't been struck with ch then, but my wife still smokes and her smoke can sometimes trigger an attack.

f)  tips, tricks and techqniques?

Nothing but sheer will.  Step #1 is you HAVE to want to quit.  It was easy after that.

So far I've quit 2 weeks and my headaches are well under control if not completely gone. and that would be both migraines and clusters.

Congratulations! I wish for you smoke free PFDAN forever.

I used the Ricola breath mints sugar free and a hospital stay to get through my first 72 hours  :-[  Is that cheating?
Whatever it takes to help you make it.  It's all good.

My Goodness....

Well as most of you know,  after having been mildly chronic for 13 years it was about 10 weeks ago that I began my first full fledged "cycle".  I actually had quit smoking for a month threw hypnosis before this cycle.  I was doing ok till the day the GP ordered the MRI and I was uncertain as to why at the point and I broke down into tears worried about "what might be".  So I started up again.  So since I had quit smoking...and then I got slammed hard I doubt it really has that much to do with things...at least for me.

You know what a pain in the ass I am about this. On May 20th, it will be 24 years since I quit.....not a puff.

Nothing remarkable about it because I think there is a genetic factor in being successful with crap like this.

Yup. I quit in 1980 but my CH lasted until 1991. What that means is anyone's guess. I can tell you that it is NOT a reason to give up trying.

Jonny sweetie, "I" use the term mild as a comparison only.  Simply due to the comparitive (as in comparison to others) frequency of attacks over the 13 years before March 8th.

I don't want to enter into a debate over semantics dear.  The documentation of my history with Dr. and ER visits from the time I first began with these HA's to the day I walked into Dr. Neuhoffs office March 10th, was what determined this.  Just as I would never say to anyone who is episodic and gets a two week cycle once every 5 years...there is no such animal.  The spectrum of this is too broad.

In *comparison* I also consider myself very fortunate that I have NOT had to suffer the upper end of the spectrum of frequency for the last 13 years, and that when the multiple attacks a day began on March 8th, that I was able to get in to see a GP that at least had the knowlege enough to know not to just tell me to go take an aspirin and try to lay down, saying I'll be fine in day or two.  Who tried to help as best he could, and when he couldn't, refered me to the specialist who knew about Topamax, and it's benifits.  Who knew that Initrex injections is a known and effective abort, and was able to see in my records that it had worked for me in the past when I was told these were "massive migraines".

Jonny, if because I haven't had to experience the extreem end of the bell curve of this condition it is your contention I don't belong here then so be it...

Don't go gettin your knickers all twisted.

Firstly, I don't know you.  I've never seen you.  I probably will never see you, so I don't know what you look like.  Anything I could dream up would be in my own mind and have nothing to do with reality.  Same thing for most of us.

Secondly, saying something like "I won't say what else I'm still able to do..too many men around here might get the wrong idea" to anyone, especially "us boys" is like daring them to ask you to tell and automatically puts the ideas in their heads.   Kinda like saying "Don't think about sour dill pickles."  Now that you've read it, your mouth is probably watering just thinking about biting into the sourness.  Automatic.  Instead of getting bent - tease back and drive us crazy.

Lastly outside of this thread, I would have forgotten about the comment anyways.  I can't remember half the important things that happen to me, let alone something I typed in fun on a message board.

So, that being said, as far as I'm concerned the comment is gone and forgotten and shall not be commented on again - by me anyways.
