I have no had CH for almost 3 years. Ive been thru 5 cycles, and just started my sixth. My CH isnt the most severe in that I never get more than 2 in a day, and I know exactly when they are coming. However, when they hit, they hit hard.

I FIRST started having clusters IMMEDIATELY after what was the worst dentist visit I've ever had. I went in for a simple cavity fill, and came out in intense pain. The dentist gave me five shots of novacaine, but she could not get me numb. She had to go on and drill anyway, trying to be carefull. Of course, while drilling it felt like she was drilling right on a nerve.

I am convinced in my mind that this somehow caused or triggered my CH. I started my first CH not two weeks after the visit. I do smoke, and occasionally drink, etc, but until this day Id never had even a bad headache. Has anyone else's CH started after any kind of dental work????

Wanted to say Hello ! You're the first person that is actually close to where I live. I'm in southern Indiana, about 10 minutes or so from Lou. KY.

I've had tons of nasty dental work done but I don't that's brought on my CH's.
I did get hit with a CH during an office visit once during cleaning. My dentist actually knew of CH's and cut the appt. short right then.

There has been lots of speculation (and occasionally research) about links between clusters and dental work, sinus problems, and injuries to the head and neck. At this point, the best answer seems to be "maybe, for some people." Damaging one part of the trigeminal nerve could make it more sensitive to other problems.

My philosophy is that if you have allergies and recurrent sinus problems, get those treated. Maybe that will help, maybe not, but its worth doing for its own sake. Same for dental issues. Some of my dentists have been incredibly good, others have been hacks. I never saw a connection with my headaches and dental work, although my sinuses have been through a lot over the years and maybe that is an aggravater for me.

No link to dental problem with me. Mine just started out of the blue one day. Never had a ha in my life before that. That is how it is for many people. Just one day they start. I think the rest is coincidence. We do know there is a nuerological defect. But to what degree that plays no one knows for sure yet.

No. Sorry, but I do believe your dentist visit was just a coincidence with the start of your cycle. It seams that the Beast just appears whenever it feels like it. Sending vibes hoping you get a very short cycle this time around.

Welcome from me, too. I was born in Louisville, KY in Baptist East Hospital. :) Are you into the Kentucky Derby? Coming up! :)

Sorry to hear you're in pain. :( I have also had a ton of dental work, and I had my first cavity when I was 3, but as far as I know...no connection to any headache problems I have.

I did go to an orthodontal specialist over the last summer (before I had CH) to make some of my family shut up about the possibility of TMJ causing my headaches, and the specialist (who is associated with University of Pennsylvania) said that maybe a very tiny component of my headaches could be dental related, but he felt the majority of it was neurological, biological, and maybe related to some musculoskelatal things as well. But otherwise, he didn't feel that dental work would be very beneficial to me for the cost. I liked that he was honest.

I think you'll find that it's a coincidence. It's human nature to remember all the "hits" when looking for answers and forgetting the "misses."

Alcohol can bring them on but not for us all. Some have problems with MSG.

My belief is that it's a case of having the bad luck to be a victim of sloppy engineering.

Well, I had seen a dentist on the same fall my first CH appeared, but I don't think it had anything to do with it. After all, it had been weeks in between the two and my CH properly started a year later.

No dental link here. Though I do have TMJ in both side of my jaws, and have been told that could aggravate my CH's. For the most part though, it is like having arthritis in the jaws. My left side is the worst, but my clusters are primarly on the right side - though they have switched sides before. Was always the right side from 1987 to 1995, then it switched to the left.
Had bad teeth, but they have all been taken care of. I am still chronic with Ch though, as I have been since Feb of '98.
Hope this cycle doesn't last long for you.

I had four impacted wisdom teeth removed surgically because I was, get this, I was scared of the pain.

Very shortly after this, I had my first cycle. I had thought that they had punctured some membrane in my sinuses during the procedure. I had no idea of what a cluster headache was. Coincidence? Maybe.

Scared of the pain...yuck yuck.

I have the chronics and mine started immediatley after a root canal. I am also convinced that dental work had something to do with it. Also, when i have my headaches, I always get the worst pain both behind the eyes and in/aroudn the tooth that was worked on.

I don't think so mainly because I went to the dentist this cycle to have a tooth removed(a bad cavity too up to the gum line) and went through a painless (almost) removal three weeks ago and this cycle still hasn't ended. Sorry :(

No link with dental work here!Hadall teeth pulled 23 years ago and got full dentures. Ch"s didnt start for 3 more years! When my husbands started he was driving a semi and hauling coal, we thought at the time it was due to breathing the coal dust. The first Dr. he seen called them histine headaches. And tried for a long time to get them under control but finally sent him to St. Louis where he was diagnosed with CH. And has had them ever since no matter what he does or doesnt do if they want to appear they DO!! Hope your pain eases!!!!

I've gotten a few shots per tooth, four may not be unusual, but not getting numb?? Doc must have had a bad batch of the novo. Unless it was an emergency, consider rescheduling another appointment soon thereafter instead for the work to be done. After such an experience so painful, it is still unusual to trigger clusters unless after three years it just coincidentally decided to make an entrance once again. Are you going to go back to that dentist?

I sort of got a headache two weeks later too. That's when the bill came in.
