Ya'll know how important our clusterpets are.... so --

I was wondering if anyone out there has or knows about "pet insurance".

Is it worth it??
Recommendations? etc??

Wanna keep Chloe healthy - and be able to pay for it if she gets hurt - but Chloe's had a few mishaps lately, and I was wondering if I should get this pet insurance... was looking into it - it would have saved us money (i think) - but I dont know WHICH type to get - etc.

Any help .......

Hi Tina,

I use Veterinary Pet Insurance -- http://www.petinsurance.com/. I have 2 corgis.

They've been a good company to deal with so far. It covered most of the shots/spay/neuter business and one rat poison incident that could have been costly.

You have to pay the vet in full and they send you the check.

I believe with pet insurence you have to follow a strict routine with regular shots (vacinations are a good thing tho) by a lisenced vet on time and heartworm rabies ect and all that jazz and have documentation to prove it while insured.....I beileve relular or annual vet visits and checkups are required. That in itself can be costly and sum vets require annual heartworm testing and others don't as long as the pet has been ON the med most of the summer months. Somthing to think about cost wise......NOT that I think it is a bad idea or worth it what so ever.......I am NOT sayin it isn't. But it can all add up to be a costly venture with our without insurence with pet care.....mite want to check around. AKC offers insurence thru the club.....it requires a regular vet routine. I wanted to get my kennel dogs insured but my insurecne co. doesn't insure animals. And other places I read up about were goin to cost way too much PER DOG....plus reguireing regualr vet visits and vet given vaccinations. It was gonna be a fortune in vet bills for me cuz I give my own shots ect ect ect. I buy my heartgurd from my vet but I haven't had to test them all since there on it all dureing the sumer months....some still require the tests annualy reguardless tho and can be expensve !!!! Of ourse our pets deserve the best Pam

VPI isn't strict about how often you need to see the vet. It just pays based on what premium you buy and how often you submit a claim.

They gave me a little break on per dog cost because I have 2 dogs, but it would be pricey with many. They don't offer a family plan ;)

I was determined, after paying huge vet bills for my last dog, that I never wanted to decide whether I could care for my animals based on whether or not I could afford it.

Check to make sure they will let you use it in your state...I found a few that wouldn't in Minnesota.

My weimaraner has mast cell cancer. She's 9 1/2 yrs old and she had radiation therapy 5 years ago and it wasn't cheap, but is was worth every penny. We didn't get pet insurance when our dogs were young, our vet talked us out of it. I will definitely get it next time, it covers a portion of annual shots, and other meds. It would have covered a large portion of the radiation therapy, not to mention removal of subsequent tumors, benign and malignant. Our golden retriever has had some large benign tumors removed that were in not good places that would have also been covered. In my opinion, it is a good thing to have, especially nowadays when pet medical care rivals human care and the pricing too.

Yup it is a good idea if ya can afford it and be sure and check there rules and regulations. The one I recently check into had alot of requirements that HAD to be follwed "as stated" to be valid when needed and it required several vet checkups a year and such.......but for a HERD of dogs it was not affordable. There is a 200 to 300 % markup in vet supplies these days and one of my vets is astronomical with visits and surgeries shots ect ect.....but he is my 24 hr guy in case of emergencies and I also have a friend with a back woods old fashiond vet office for simple supplies visits or procedures with limited hours. What's this world comeing to Pam

I have 3 dogs. Every time I go to the vet it seems like it costs about $450... Yes, pet insurance is a good idea.
