Title: Web to crash on Thursday or Friday
Post by floridian on Apr 20th, 2004, 3:38pm
According to this article, which discusses a TCP flaw that will be revealed on Thursday. Not sure how reliable this analysis is, but if its a problem, its gotta be fixed.  Please plan accordingly.

``Any flaw to a fundamental protocol would raise significant concern and require significant attention by the folks who run the major infrastructures of the Internet,'' said Amit Yoran, the U.S. government's cybersecurity chief. The new flaw has dominated discussions since last week among experts in close-knit security circles.

The public announcement coincides with a presentation Watson expects to make Thursday at a popular Internet security conference in Vancouver, where Watson said he will reveal full details of his research.

Watson, who runs the www.terrorist.net Web site, predicted that hackers will understand how to begin launching attacks ``within five minutes of walking out of that meeting.''

``It's fairly easy to implement,'' Watson said. ``Someone walking out of the conference would immediately understand. No matter how vague I am, people will figure it out.''

Looks like I got it early...LOL.....My PC crashed bad yesterday, but right before it did I noticed that after clicking anywhere on this MB I would see that I was recieving data from CH.COM, as soon as that stopped I was still recieving data but it was from redrubberball.net....sometimes its a different site but mostly red rubber ball.

Anyone know what up with that?, is someone trying to get into my shit buy using the MB somehow?

Actually looks like a bad one.  Router vendors are crafting bios and firmware updates.  Life may suck for a few days on the net.

No redrubberball.net but I'm gettting inundated with popups ever since I surf into some porn site. Also had  someone  hack me and tried to log onto my isp but Norton caught it and deleted it. That would explain the several times I found a logon page to ATT timed out that required a password.  A slow painful death for these bastards wouldn't be good enough. Maybe chronic CH with all 10s??? I always said I wouldn't wish it on anyone but now...

I appreciate this cause these guys aren't where they should be. If they got in here who else got in here. Wierd crap has definately been happening the past couple of days. Yesterday I got a warning that someone was attempting to access my computer and it shut itself down. Upon reboot I was prompted to contact AOL and they instructed me to change my password and gave me a case #. ..........Do you think it was these marketing people or someone trying to grab a credit card number or something?

I don't know Brother,  but you got some majorly strange stuff going on with your  computer :o.   Things that shut down your computer are usually going to be viruses.  I don't know where you can get free virus protection (anybody?).  Good luck and hope it clears up for you.

Man alot of this talk is computer mumble jumble to me.....I've already killed 3 computers......there should be a law against such ABUSE....well one was an old freebie DOS and other lived 6 years and last one lived jus under 2 yrs. Anyhow.....I keep gettin port scan attacks but my anitivirus or firewall.....what ever.....stops it and gives me info and is always some strange address. Anyhow.....here is a link to a free pretty good virus scan my server reccommends to run along with your usual from time to time. And also there the free version of AVG 6.0 antivirus available the guys recommended that sold me this new PC. They have a small shop that builds there own and seem to know there shit....plus computers are there total LIFE. Here's the links.....look for the free edition on the AVG which is the last link I am posting......they told me at the shop it's a good one to have and it updates too....hope these help ?? Thanks John I just down loaded that free version and yellow I have no more.

I have Norton for virus prevention and it seems to be doing its job...........this was something different, it was a warning that someone was attempting to access or gain control over my computer. Then it shut down by itself. When it rebooted it prompted me to contact Aol and so on. Windows update is up to date, I double checked. It hasn't happened tonight so we'll see, firewall is up for the time being.

Thanks for everything

Sean

Sean,

You have been hijacked.  The highlights you are seeing on your pages are put there by some evil software running on your computer.  Nobody here sees those highlights.  It may be very difficult to remove this from your system, but the following programs are useful:

Cool Web Shredder (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html)
A small utility for removing CoolWebSearch (aka CoolWwwSearch, YouFindAll, White-Pages.ws and a dozen other names). Spybot S&D tends to forget essential parts of the hijack, so until it updates, you can just this to completely remove the hijack. Updated to remove the new variants once they come out.

More information on the CWS hijacker, including recent variants of it, can be found here (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html).

Note: CoolWWWSearch.SmartKiller (v1 and v2) is a newer, real ugly variant of CoolWWWSearch. When running, it will close every browser window you use to visit a large list of anti-spyware-sites, and even will close Spybot-S&D and some other anti-spyware applications as well. Download

CoolWWWSearch.SmartKiller (v1/v2) MiniRemoval (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4113.html) which can disable this latest version.

Trojan Hunter (http://www.misec.net/)
Reviewed by ComputerCops here (http://www.computercops.biz/article3108.html)

Adaware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/)
Excellent for spyware, but not as good at removing your trojan.  Definitely useful.

Just like SpyBot Search & Destroy (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html) which is incredibly useful, but which probably won't solve this particular problem.

Get ALL of those, and make sure youre running a personal firewall like ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp), or even a full-featured security solution like Norton Internet Security 2004 (http://www.symantecstore.com/dr/sat1/ec_MAIN.Entry10?V1=584414&PN=1&SP=10023&xid=27674&DSP=&CUR=840&PGRP=0&CACHE_ID=74456)

Good luck.

Don't some web sites or MB's do that with the highlighted words cuz the words are sponsers or sponsers links to there web site.....key words ? You can click onto the words and go to the sponsers web page kinda deal. Some do it to keep web sites or MB's free they say 'or so I've read'. But......they don't do that here RITE ? So that happening can be some sort of BUG to git you to go to there web sites ? Good grief......I'm gonna go back to my can with a string to communicate soon. I'm startin ta sweat and think I have a virus Pam

For the last three or four days I have been getting a strange compilation of other YABB sites superimposed ontop of CH.com.  It gives message headers, addresses, you name it.  None of my virus, spybot, firewall programs, whatever have found it.  Anybody know what it is or what to do with it?  It doesn't happen with any site but this, but this is the only MB i use.

Why when I type "salt water" on this board with a space it shows up as I type it, but when I combine the two words it appears as "salthingyer"??  Am I the only one who sees it transmutate to salthingyer??  Did someone hit the improbability drive again??

I like rules, but not bad ones.  I though my spelling sukd, but salthingyer is in fact a word.

Quote:
2 entries found for salthingyer.
salt·wa·ter or salt-wa·ter   Audio pronunciation of salthingyer ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (sôltwôtr, -wtr)
adj.

  1. Relating to, consisting of, or containing salt water: a salthingyer solution.
  2. Inhabiting or occurring in seawater or salt water: salthingyer fish; the salthingyer crocodile.
  3. Done or used in salt water: salthingyer fishing; salthingyer lures.

Title: Re: Web to crash on Thursday or Friday
Post by fubar on Apr 21st, 2004, 11:04pm
Chris,

The seven dirty words are only banned from public broadcast television.  Cable (like the Comedy Channel) is free to run uncut versions of Southpark Bigger Longer and Uncut because it's considered an opt-in service, as in you invite it into your home because you can only get it by paying for it (or stealing it).  Public airwaves are public property and fall under decency laws since they are really an asset that it 'used up' by people who are issued Federal licenses.  So, it does make some sense that these airwaves fall under public scrutiny and regulation.

Post by Root on Apr 22nd, 2004, 2:40am
No the web is not going to crash shheeesssh.
It is a vulnerability in the Boundary Gateway Protocol (BGP) which relies (usually) on a persistent TCP session. On routers, firewalls etc.
The fix is out and has been installed on just about everybodies routers.
You folks with software firewalls are vulnerable.
Go to your firewall vender and look for a patch. If they don't have one, remove your firewall and get one that does.
As far as the general funkiness users seem to be having lately. That is mostly a function of Web Browsers that use the antiquated Mozilla 4.0 browser engine. Currently the only examples I'm aware of that are still using it are Internet Explorer (IE) versions 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.1, 5.5 and 6.0. If you have one of these I would suggest you either remove it or just plain not use it. Get a modern Browser from someone like.
http://www.opera.com
http://mozilla.org
They use the Mozilla 5.0 browser engine. Not perfect, but worlds better than 4.0
I assure you your web experience can only improve.

This is just another ingenious way that people get their unwanted ads to come up on your system. It sounds like something I have run in to that comes from vibrantmedia.com.

I don't know if you are familiar with using the hosts file on your system but if you ad "127.0.0.1 itxt.vibrantmedia.com" to your hosts file and save it, then you shouldn't see this any more.
