Title: Does someone need and XP upgrade?
Post by 5-string on Apr 18th, 2004, 12:10pm
I bought and XP upgrade software package for my pc about 2 days before I broke down and bought a whole new set-up. Since my new system has XP already in it,I don't need the XP upgrade I just bought. (for $100.00 and removed it from the plastic so I can't return it even though I did'nt install it!...oh well!) Sooo..... I figured I'd offer it to someone here that needs it but doesn't have the $$ to upgrade. If you're interested, let me know and I'll send it to ya. It's just sitting here collecting cat hair. I just bought it 2 weeks ago. And I won't take any money from any of you for it.

Cool. I've got an HP pavilion(160mg) set-up. I don't have a pentium though. Do I need a pentium for that? soory,I'm still new to computer tech...Thanks Kirk,

Sure it will go on a Pavillion. Or most anything else for that matter. Its pretty agnostic about that sort of thing.

Send shipping info to kirk@oregonfast.net It will be sent out post haste.

XP is installed in my new PC I bought a few months ago cuz my HP pooped a motherboard. Anyhow......I have found out alot of my old software is NOT compatible to XP.......(esp my 4 yr old digital camera) the software will NOT install period. A few have sent me links to try and see what I can do.....and am workin on readin up in my spare time (thanks for the info guys)....but jus thought I'd bring it up that maybe....jus maybe you'll have some conflicts to work on and figure out. My PC BEEPS when I run some games too and goes nuts if I don't get out.....sounds like onea them British police cars sirens it gets so bad. Am thinkin that mite be when I run them in the 3-D mode.....which is too cool not ta use. Pam with XP blues

Pam, you shouldn't need any extra software for your camera with xp... Just plug it in and it should show up in "My Computer".

And if it doesn't, just get a card reader for whatever kind of memory card the camera uses.

5-string,

You better make sure what Ramone is running now is upgradable.  You can't use the upgrade with all previous version of Windows.  I forget which ones (I think ME) don't upgrade and you need to buy the complete XP software.

What's the matter Grant?

Don't want to see Bill lose another drone?

So far SuSE seems the best for me. It even works with my crazy joystick that windows hates so much. Can't wait until 9.1 comes out.

Thanks Bob. Hey Ramon, this version is for windows98,windows98 2nd edition or windows millennium edition. Will that work?

And Opus/Paul, I would love to see a group of young people assemble a company that would knock Microsoft down a few notches. That would be fun to watch.
I hope the Microsoft police are'nt reading this..if they are, I might be in big trouble for even thinking it. Before you know it Microsoft might have there own"patriot act".

5 string,

There are a lot of companies, I don't know the age of the employees,

Mandrake (http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/)- best for beginners.

Fedora (http://fedora.redhat.com/)- RedHats free version.

SuSE (http://www.suse.com/us/)- smooth, UIs for almost everything.

Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.net/)- Really good, you don't have to install, just run from the CD.

FreeBSD (http://www.freebsd.org/) -I don't want to leave Root out.

And lets not forget GNU (http://www.gnu.org/)- where it all began.

Remember all these are free, as in speech and beer.

sheeeeesh!   you just never give up - do ya?   You penguin lovers will never pass up a chance to convert someone.   ::)

The reason I posted what I did was I'd hate to see someone who is self-admittedly "still new to computer tech" get steered down that road.

And before you say that its soooo easy, how is your mom's Linux system running?   ;;D   Is she finding it as easy as you said she would?  She was gonna do the installation all by herself, right?  (If someone is unsure of their "abilities", why not just buy a computer with the OS installed?)

BTW... If all 6 of the Linux flavors you list run sooooo good,  why didn't you just settle on the first one?    just curious   ::)

My mother is waiting for the warrantee to run out. She thought XP would be easy to use but has found out it isn't. I will have her try Knoppix, then this summer I will probably install SuSE. She cannot format an hard drive so she probably couldn't setup a dual boot system. But I am sure she could install Linux as a single system. Right now she is frustrated because XP is running like molasses even though it is free of ad/spyware. So she may let me do it sooner.

Right now I am using Mandrake 9.2 and testing SuSE, Fedora core2, with the 2.6 kernel. Mandrake just doesn't do what I want without a lot of prodding. But I can use it for my everyday tasks. What I really need is some better hardware, this 500Mhz celeron just doesn't cut it for large image manipulation. The SCSI hard drive helps but not enough. I have to keep Mandrake on it because my daughter really likes it a lot. She did get upset when her games stopped running in Wine, but they also won't run in windows either. Must be some freaky bug that fell out the sky, they give the same error on two different computers with two different os's.

I'm not sure how Knoppix (or anything for that matter) is going to be that much easier to use.

What is she running?  There's probably an easy solution.  (easier than installing and learning a new OS  ;;D )

XP pro SP-1 on a dell with a pentium 4. I haven't looked at to see what's up with it. I'm sure she needs some updates, I couldn't get them from M$ to burn to a disc for her so she will have to do it on dialup. It has been pretty stable, with only a few BSOD's.

Well it is for me, I am having a lot of fun breaking things and repairing, compiling new kernels, I am also working with networking trying different programs in both Linux and Windows to run the other with a virtual desktop. I also have one less machine to maintain as Linux doesn't need defragmenting, cleaning temp files, and I haven't lost a DLL yet.

There are Computers coming out with pre installed Linux, but not everyone has $300 to spend a new computer.

There's gotta be a problem with your mom's machine.
I only have a 1.3ghz pentium4 with xp pro, and I just reformatted and it's as fast as any mom could ever need it to be.... Are you sure she's not just frustrated with dialup?
Either that or it's just choked up with bullshit programs and a used and abused registry.

If you were a good son you'd get her cable internet acces and reformat her drive for her. :P [smiley=laugh.gif]

Her Desktop is becoming very slow to respond. She did get get Incredamail a few weeks ago. I have checked it for spyware and it was clean. Defragging didn't help either. I still have to learn how to repair NT. Guess I have to do some reading.

No cable where we live. I have offered to hook her up to my DSL via wifi ( she lives next door) but she says dialup is fine for her.

Is that the windows answer to all problems, a clean install every year?
