Title: Re: OT: Happy Birthday To Me! Post by Jeepgun on Apr 13th, 2004, 12:50pm Thanks, everyone! I'm not high-maintenance as long as I get what I want. And I agree, Echo: Hummers are nice. H2's are not. ;;D Funny story about that: I have a braggart, loud-mouthed attention-wh*re neighbor who bought a big black H2. Ever since then, whenever he sees me in the driveway tinkering with my Heep, he'd come over and tell me how great his H2 is, and how it's the supreme off-road machine, blah blah blah f*ckin blah... The only offroading he's done is the time he backed over his wife's flowerbeds, and that thing is always waxed and probably cleaner than the day it came off of the car lot. Meanwhile, my Jeep is always covered with mud, the siderails dented and bent, and my front bumper has rock rash all over it. I got sick of him, so I ordered some round stickers off of eBay that say "H2 Recovery Team" and put them on my Jeep. The next time he came over, he was going on and on, and then he stopped short and said, "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT???" pointing at my sticker. I just smiled at him. He hasn't been over to talk to me about his H2 anymore. (Thank god for small mercies.) ;;D I hope I get all that I want too, but chances are, I probably won't. Oh well... I'm easy to please: I can be satisfied with Jeep parts. ;;D |

Title: Re: OT: Happy Birthday To Me! Post by Jeepgun on Apr 13th, 2004, 10:11pm LOL, Tom! I grew up with Chevys, but there are several Fords that I like, too. The old Mustangs and old Broncos, specifically. The Mustang has been wimped-out and turned into Granny's Grocery-Getter and the Bronco II has all the taste and character of blank cardboard. Jeeps are kind of wimpy when they're stock, but you can still wheel 'em, and they are a very buildable platform. Piece by piece, a shadetree mechanic can turn them into highly capable rigs. Mine's built like a tank, but the only way that 2.5L will do 70mph is if I shove it off a cliff. LOL -Frank |

Frank-- I've always felt that if you want to do REAL off roading, you go Jeep and it you can afford it you buy LandRover (old day). Your Jeep would blow my Expediton away climbing rocks and navagating creeks. But, at least I would be confrotable waiting for help with the AC running. I've looked at H2's and H1's. Over priced and just not practical. My Expo is getting old (1997) and I like it that way. Not worried about sand, dirt, or dings. All I ask is she run properly, and she does, and keep my beer cold! Title: Re: OT: Happy Birthday To Me! Post by Jeepgun on Apr 15th, 2004, 1:12pm Sweet pic, Tom! My basic belief in buying vehicles, is that someone should buy them according to what they will be used for. Why tiny women buy 8,000 lb. vehicles capable of hauling a bull moose through 10' snowdrifts, just to get groceries and take the kids to soccer and dance lessons, is utterly beyond me. Likewise, I wouldn't buy a minivan to go rock-crawling. The Hummers are too wide for running trails, and the H2 is just embarrassing. Fancy sheet metal stuck onto a Suburban chassis... Pretty sad... There are folks who build them up and wheel them though. There's a difference between bashing up a $22,000 Jeep and a $60,000 H2, though. *shudder* When I go rock-crawling, I take the Jeep. When I have to take the highway to go to Nashville or further, I take the Nissan Quest. It looks like your Expedition serves your purposes very well, and (thank god), you're actually using it for what it was intended to be used for. :) |

I fish w/ some guys who are mechanics and worked on the H1's when they first hit the market. Many rear ends replaced because gearing was so low but sold as a highway vehicle <LMAO>. And people wonder why military caravans drive @ 50 MPH. I know the locals laugh @ me for having my Expedition on the beach but I laugh @ the guys/gals who drive the Mercedes or the Porsche’s or BMW's. I particularly have a great time seeing all the Explorers, mini-vans, Ford Escapes, Subaru’s and the like who have "All Time 4 Wheel Drive" get stuck. I laugh and then stop to give them my shovel. Once they dig out the chassis, I then drop a line on them and pull them out of the hole and into a 'good rut'. I'd like to say I have as many off-road miles as highway but we all know that would be a lie. I use the 4x4 for Beach fishing in NC (Buxton, Hatteras, Salvo, Ocracoke, Carova). Never gotten stuck with my Expo even when the 4x4 dropped....air pressure is your friend (the lower the better in sand). And it comes in handy during the occasional snow storm in Maryland. TomM |

Title: Re: OT: Happy Birthday To Me! Post by Jeepgun on Apr 15th, 2004, 2:44pm Yep. You got it, Tom. The less air, the wider the tire, the better the traction, and the less "digging" the tire does. When we rock-crawl, we drop the PSI to 10. At that point, the Jeep is unstoppable. :) |
||
Title: Re: OT: Happy Birthday To Me! Post by TomM on Apr 15th, 2004, 3:49pm Zasi!!!!Welcome Home!!!!! How ya doin'? Some more pics from my web page: http://mysite.verizon.net/vze6mqbc Click on 'Carova' to find more pics from the Outer Banks of North Carolina where those ponies run wild and free. 2 places in the U.S. that I adore....Outer Banks of North Carolina and the Chesapeake Bay. Frank--I normally run @ 15-20 PSI on the beach. The time my 4x4 dropped I was in very deep, soft sand but dropped to 9 PSI; I drove all over the beach like it was asphalt. Low PSI = Wide tires...larger footprint...no digging/spinning....vehicle litterally 'pops' up on top of the sand. I'd be afraid of spinning a tire off @ 10 PSI climbing rocks. Has that ever happened to you and what did you do? At least in the sand there is a 'give' factor. |
