Title: Favourite Book? Post by kamccran on Apr 9th, 2004, 4:12pm Hello, hello. I was just wondering what all your 'favourite' book/book genres are.. I'm currently reading 'Cry, The Beloved Country' for my AP English Lit class.. to be honest, I highly doubt that I would have read this book if our teacher hadn't told us to.. I started it the other day and didn't really like it, but knowing that I *have* to read it, I carried on. It's getting kinda better, but I just looked on Sparknotes to see what it says about it, and oh my goodness! Does anything happy happen in it?? I also have to read 'Brave New World' and 'The Handmaid's Tale' by like, next week I think. (Argh, the exam's in 5 weeks!) We were studying 'Hamlet', 'Frankenstein', 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Things Fall Apart'. The only one of which that I've actually read is 'Hamlet'. Goodness knows how I'm passing this class... Oops. Though I am planning on reading them all as soon as I can! (I liked the BBC version of P&P though. :) ) Yeah.. so... what's your fave book? What do you recommend? Have you read of any these books that I have to?? lol. |

"Brave New World" has come back to haunt us with new directional genetic decisions which have been discussed. In almost every genetics book I read which was recently written, that book comes up for comparison as the topic in a chapter. Of which I've read, most notably "Enough", staying human in an engineered age by Bill McKibben and "Our Posthuman Future", consequences of the biotechnology revolution by Francis Fukuyama both dedicate chapters to "Brave New World". Insightful and yes, suggested reading. It is mentioned in other books I've read too, "Nature via Nurture", "The Blank Slate", "Human Cloning and Human Dignity" and "The Delphic Boat". It has surprising modern relevancy. library late fee felon. Kevin M |

My second favorite, although not a novel but a great book none the less, is P.S. I Love You by Barbara Conklin (who I had corresponded with as a teen, and still have the letters she wrote me). Another one I loved is The Tao of Inner Peace by Diane Dreher. :)mel |

Title: Re: Favourite Book? Post by FZfan on Apr 9th, 2004, 11:43pm Whoa! didn't know so many of you were familiar with Mr. Zappa's work. Cool! Kevin, Apostrophe didn't make it simply because i didn't have a graphic for it when I made that gif. It's certainly worthy of being in that line-up. It was the very first Zappa album I heard back in a buddy's dorm room in 1973. Really hard to pick a favorite for me, but if I had to be nailed down on just one, I think it would have to be You Can't Do That Live On Stage Anymore - Volume 2 "The Helsinki Concert 1974". Features pretty much the Apostrophe line-up which is my favorite Zappa band with Ruth Underwood and George Duke. Great live concert, especially for the time. I'm a bit of a collector of concert/music DVD's. Last time I was at the DVD store I was thrilled to find two Zappa DVD's! Baby Snakes and Does Humor Belong In Music? Baby Snakes features the 1978 line-up with Terry Bozio and Adrian Belew. Live footage from the 1978 New York shows, which resulted in the Zappa Live In New York CD. Great stuff on this one. Does Humor Belong In Music is also excellent. Live concert from 1984 with Ike Willis and Ray White. BTW, has anyone seen this week's Onion? Here, I'll copy the blurb down at the bottom of the page. Cracked me up! This article is from the bottom of this week's Onion: Frank Zappa Fan Thinks You Just Haven't Heard The Right Album NEDERLAND, CO—In spite of your insistence that you are not into Frank Zappa, avid fan Roger Von Lee believes that you would change your mind if you heard the right album. "You're prejudiced, because the only Zappa you know is 'Valley Girl' and 'Don't Eat The Yellow Snow,'" Von Lee told you Tuesday. "Seriously, you need to check out Hot Rats or Absolutely Free. Zappa and the Mothers were at their peak, and Zappa's jazz-rock fusion experiments predate Bitches Brew. That'll totally convince you that Zappa's the shit." Von Lee added that if those two don't get under your skin, he can recommend another 15 to 20 albums that will for sure. |

Title: Re: Favorite Book? Post by wsnyder on Apr 10th, 2004, 9:11am There are several fine authors along the west coast of the USA and Canada these days that are writing some great novels. T.J. Boyle, Douglas Coupland, and Tom Robbins, to name three, are writing with amazing imagery and take the reader into ideas that really need to be considered. Very fun, yet serious, writers. The actor Alan Arkin wrote a book back in the late 60s or 70s intended for kids titled The Lemming Condition about the mythology of the mass suicide of lemmings. Of course no publisher would touch it as a children's book so it was finally published for adults and has never been out of publication. For a 48 page book it is amazing the effect it has had on my life. It is truly worth the eight bucks for a paperback copy and a real keeper at that. Re-reading will likely be found mandatory. Bill |
