Title: Honorary Clusterhead Christopher
Post by ClusterChuck on Apr 3rd, 2004, 10:43am
Hopefully most of you remember our Honorary Clusterhead, Christopher, who is OneEyeBlind’s (Nancy) nephew.

For the newbies that don’t know him, let me give you a quick summary.  Christopher is a charming, gregarious, joyous 16 year old lad.  He had cancer many years ago that caused him to loose one leg.  He then went into remission for many years.  Ah, the joy of those years!  He never let his missing leg get him or those around him, down, or slow him down.  Unfortunately, cancer returned last year.  He has a cancer on his lungs, and another one in his brain.  He went in for treatment, again.  He went through some VERY rough times.  He had many problems, and downslides.  The radiation and chemo helped the one in his brain, after some very bad times.  Unfortunately, the growth on his lungs did not get better.  Through most of it, he kept a great outlook, and faith in his God that there was some sort of plan here.  Then they discovered more cancer in his stomach area, on his spine, and other areas.  He was told that they could prolong his life, but did not think they could cure him.

Well, at this point, he made a decision that he does not want to go through any more chemo.  He realized what his life would be like, and has now made that decision.  I, and his family fully support his decision.  It is his life, he has the right to make that choice.

So now he is getting radiation to try to keep him out of pain.  He had to go in for surgery to remove the growth on his spin, as it had paralyzed him from the waist down.  They had to install a feeding tube a couple months ago, to maintain his body as well as possible.  That is still there and in use.

The doctors have given him 3 to 6 months to live.  He is at home, most of the time.  They are working hard to give him some dignity for the end of his short life, and keep him as pain free as possible.  For a lot of the time, he still has his charming and upbeat personality and outlook.  He and his family have accepted the future.  They are at peace with his decision.  It is now just a matter of time, and just keep him as comfortable as possible.

I just wanted to pass the above on to our cluster family.  I know many of you have prayed for him, and sent cards letters, and Christmas gifts.  Let’s keep our prayers for him and his family, and accept his decision.  The Lord has his reasons for this to happen, and we will never really know what those reasons are.  I have accepted it, and very much respect Christopher’s decision.  I regret that I will never get to meet this wonderful person.

And here I thought I had problems.

Humbled Chuck

My prayers continue to be with Christopher and his entire family every day.  It makes me so sad to hear stories like this, but he has been such an incredible fighter and so strong through all of this!  He deserves every moment of peace and happiness that he can have during his time left.

Christopher was right down the hall from my little buddy Jared at Hershey Med Center, and Jared passed away on February 2nd at the age of 9.  Going to his funeral was one of the hardest things I've ever done, but these young kids teach us more than anything else ever could.  They have taught me to be strong and be thankful for what I have.  And to make the most of every day.

When Jared passed away, someone said that up in heaven there is a room all blue and white (Penn State colors) where only THON kids (part of a PSU fundraiser that supports Four Diamonds kids and families which Jared was a part of and Christopher is a part of) can play and everyone is happy because there is no more cancer.

I have seen that death from cancer is not a defeat.  All of these kids have survived and won simply by the strength and fight inside of them.  Christopher has won, and he has shown that the cancer does not control him, because he has made his choices, and I believe in him.

All the love and thoughts and prayers I have are with him and his family.

Love,
Lizzie

Although Christopher wouldn't want it this way..the tears just keep streaming down my face. I just hope & pray he can be comfortable & not in a great deal of pain. Your decision is indeed a brave one my young friend.

WOW, what strength young Christopher has. My heart is warmed and I can truly smile inside, though sad, to know Christopher has perhaps lost his battle to conquer cancer, but in doing so will gain something far greater. Truly, God has a special plan for Christopher!

My hope is that God grant his family and friends the strength they will continue to need to cope.

For Christopher and his family, I continue to pray.

Thanks Chuck for passing on the news.

Christopher has caused a lot of clusterheads to take stock of themselves. It's during that little inward look that we get mad. At least I do at things like this.

My best wishes and thanks for the update.

Like Elaine, I skirted around this post for a few days not wanting to open it.  Now that I have, all I can do is come up with are expletives,  like DAMNIT!    [smiley=furious.gif]

I know, that helps no one, but my heart just breaks for him and his family.  I hope I  remember this when I'm feeling so darn sorry for myself.

Michelle, thanks for putting that certificate up for those that never saw it.

For those that were not here at the time, by decree of our royal majesty, King Jonny, Christopher was made an honorary Clusterhead.  From what I hear, he really got a kick out of that certificate.  One was mailed to him while he was in the hospital, during a real rough period.

Christopher: God bless you, and I hope you enjoy your Easter gathering with your large family.  I think of you constantly, and I am SO impressed with the way you have dealt with this whole episode.  You are a hero in my book.

I hated reading that b/c cancer has taken my mother and I hate to see it take someone so young. I hope and pray that he and his family's suffering is removed with the peace and happiness of knowing that he will soon be in a better place.  :)

Reading about someone with so much courage when facing so much pain and the realization of the end of their life drawing near really gives me the strength to believe that I can find some way to survive these things (CH).
