Title: Re: What exactly goes on at Conventions? Post by BobG on Apr 1st, 2004, 7:11pm Usually there is (are) speakers with knowledge in the subject of the care and feeding of clusters. Doctors, insurance reps, drug manufacturer reps, etc. And of course there the serious stuff........ Singing and table dancin', fartin', smiling and cryin', porchin', talkin' and listenin', drinkin' and smokin', playing grab-ass, eating, picture takin', wimmin watching, man-baiting..........the list is endless :o |

Title: Re: What exactly goes on at Conventions? Post by HypnoticFreddy on Apr 1st, 2004, 7:11pm Hi FZfan, I just posted on the Medication Board. The CHs are doing better. From about 2/day to 2 everyother day. I have been on Topamax as a preventative for just over a week. It is working. Side-effects are very tolerable. Yeah, I have been really reading and I am just curious as to what kind of format of activities go on at these conventions. Must be real interesting. -Freddy |

Title: Re: What exactly goes on at Conventions? Post by ClusterChuck on Apr 2nd, 2004, 12:28am I know from experience, it is the ONLY place you can get hit, and everyone will understand, and no one will freek out. If you want company while getting hit, you will have it. If you want to be left alone (that is what I prefer) then you will be left alone. If you run short on O2, it will be taken care of. The love and the vibes that are around when a group of ch'ers get to gether is AWESOME. There is no other word for it. And they must work, as when I was at the two get togethers that I went to, my ch hits were much fewer than normal. It must have been the love and vibes that did it. Chuck |

Title: Re: What exactly goes on at Conventions? Post by Callico_Kid on Apr 2nd, 2004, 12:36am Freddy, Glad you are back and that you are reading. If you have been to chemist conventions you have no idea what you are in for. There is absolutely nothing like walking into a room with a bunch of other people who are there only because of a crazy medical condition that no one else understands. When you meet another clusterhead you don't shake hands, you hug. Davcon 04 was like nothing I have ever been to and I was only able to be there for three hours. My wife can tell you that I almost cried all the way home. and for about a week afterward. To meet someone else who understands what it is you go through and CARES will blow you away. To sit talking with a couple of others and get hit with a mild one and be able to try to maintain a conversation without having to excuse yourself and go hide is priceless. I have been hit at church and I get looks of pity and feel like someone in a freak show (my selfconsciousness not their rudeness. they just don;t know how to deal with me) With other clusterheads they just take it in stride and wait for you to get over it. Right now I'm homesick for that bunch and would not trade that experience for any meds the Dr might prescribe. Plan to make the trip. If you don;t like it you don't have to go back next year. Sorry for being so verbose, but I can't help it. Jerry |

First afternoon we spend going though mandatory body cavity searches. Hap loves this part. Evening is spent getting to know new members and taking measurements for uniforms. The last Upstate NY Hitler Youth remembrance theme was fun for all and we got our pictures in lots of local papers. On day two, each is expected to demonstrate his or her sex toys and other kinky items brougt along while enjoying this year's theme of famous country music performers relating their drug rehab stories. The late afternoon concludes with the drawing to determine who gets to be hunters and who becomes the hunted in this annual event. Newbies are encouraged as there are fewer participants every year it seems. The day ends with Jonny's yearly auction of his wonderful homemade bondage equipment made in his shop. A catalog should be available soon. If you stick around for a third day you can participate in various medical experiments performed by DJ and his band of merry men and women. The men get that way after the experiments usually. DJ is such a barrel of laughs. Fun is had by all and collections for bail are made and of course the kitchen and dinning room clinics will be free of charge once again. I for one had a wonderful time in 2003 and have more or less recovered. Seriously: It was fun actually and Jonny and DJ are right. I had never met a clusterhead and I saw several people get hit. The reactions are wonderful though. Everyone gets it. Awful to see but how great it is to know that there are scores of clusterheads who know what to do and more importantly: What not to do. It is unique. We had a good talk by a doctor and nurse who study CH and are well-versed in this horror and are truly interested in us and what we have to say. They learned a lot from us and we from them. There was lots of drinking, too much smoking and hours of yakking and fun. The thing I found is that I felt so at home that I nearly forgot what I was there for until I saw some hits. Clusterheads seem to know how to have fun. Just some impressions. Charlie |

Title: Re: What exactly goes on at Conventions? Post by Elaine on Apr 2nd, 2004, 7:23am There is nothing like meeting another clusterhead. The supporters you meet teach us so much. You have a feeling of belonging and no one is a stranger. The conventions are fun, they are educational, they are heart breking also. You leave with a feeling thats wonderful but sad because you don't want to leave. You come back with a better understanding of what this site and OUCH really means. You truely know everyone is real and every one hurts even the supporters. You walk in a supporters shoe as well as a cluster head. Its WONDERFUL! |

Freddy, if you have the chance to go - take it. It truly is a life altering experience meeting other clusterfolk. You really can't describe the feeling. Kinda like meeting folks from your home planet after living with aliens all your life. I guarantee you, you will feel emotions you've never felt before and you WILL hug total strangers, laugh with them as if they're long lost family (they really are) and you'll cry when it's over. Saying goodbye at a convention sucks. Then there's the post-convention blues. The only cure for that is to go to another one! And, SP, if you get hit at a convention - the whole group feels it and will do whatever it takes to help you, even if that means leaving you totally alone and just standing guard at the door. You will have total respect and support like you've never felt before. |

Every year there is a convention of clusterheads organized by this crazy bunch. They meet and invariably there will be a few people who will get hit. This thread began with a legitimate question which we love to have fun with. I was probably the silliest of the lot. Now and then a slip of the tongue or a not too careful post provides an opening for us to "exercise" on our keyboards. Unintentionally, Luke sounded like he was looking forward to seeing someone have a cluster attack. What he meant....I'm sure...is that seeing another go through this has quite an effect when around others who are afflicted. To be sure, it's a horror. The only good thing about it is being with people who know exactly what to do or not to do for someone. It was quite an experience for me to see. Knowing that you don't have to explain it to people who never seem to get it means a lot. These conventions are social, fun, educational and we look forward to them every year. I hope this helps ane welcome aboard. Charlie |

Post by cootie on Apr 3rd, 2004, 1:04am Very good Charlie.........it was a big deal for Brad to see others hit.......he said it amost shocked him but he needed to be around other ch'rs cuz it made him feel better to know he's not alone with all this and so many similarities he felt were oddities all these years alone with it. Almost 20 yrs he never ever even talked to anouther ch'r....me either. The convention was likea religious expirience ! Pretty impressed by the ch gang Pam You all ROCK |

Title: Re: What exactly goes on at Conventions? Post by ClusterChuck on Apr 3rd, 2004, 1:17am Mikey and Jonny, I luv ya both, but I have to disagree with you on this one. I talked on the phone to Luke tonight for a long time. I got to know him a little bit. He is not a weirdo (anymore than the rest of us, that is). He has beeen battling the beast for about 25 years, since his teens. He is not looking to watch a hit to get some thrill, or high, from it. He wants to learn from it. He just want to experience a hit from the "other side" for once. I respect his wish, and see where it could help him to deal with his own battle. Personally, it would kill me to watch another get hit. I have seen Mikey get the beginning of a hit, several times, and each time, he left the room. I would have had a hard time watching him. It is bad enough to know he is in the next room battling the beast, and I can't do anything for him, but to be in the room with him, would be worse. BUT, that being said, if Mikey WANTED me in with him, to hold his hand, hug him, hold the icepack, just be with him, or whatever, I would have done it in a minute. At least I would be doing something that helps him deal with the beast. Luke does not want to be present while one of us is getting hit, if we don't want him to be. He respects our desires, and would NEVER think of intruding on us if we want to be left alone. He, like most of us, wants to be alone in his battle, but he does like to know that someone is in the next room. Me, I would prefer that no one be in the next several rooms (or especially in the same room) when I am getting hit. That way, I know that no one can hear me screaming, cussing, and head banging. So in his defence, I must say that he does not APPEAR to be a whacked out thrill seeker with a tilt towards the macabre. But, he probably is a whacked out pervert ... heehee ... WELCOME TO THE NEST OF PERVERTS, Luke! Chuck |

Title: Re: What exactly goes on at Conventions? Post by PittsburghJoe on Apr 3rd, 2004, 1:26am I'm with Chuck on this one. I've been talking to Luke for a while now, comparing cluster notes, etc. It's a bit easier since we only live about 5 miles away from each other, though we haven't met as of yet. He did NOT mean anything macabre or sadistic by what he said. He's just curious as to what it is like on the other side, having to witness someone going through an attack, rather than being the one experiencing it. Hell, I may call him one day when I'm having one, since I generally prefer having someone around in case I do something stupid. I may know intellectually I'm not gonna just keel over from the pain, but knowing it and really KNOWING it are two different things. Anyhow, I don't think anyone was overreacting to Luke's comments, I just think they were possibly misunderstood. My $.02, anyway. Joe |

Luke, if I have one at the convention, I will invite you to take photos, notes, watch... Whatever. I am unafraid, and if it will help you, be my guest. Peace, yo. Out. :) |
