Me doubts Wendy and will Tone the Blair forgive Gaddafi for showing him the soles of his feet at yesterday's meeting? I doubt that too! |

Long memories the French when it suits them, but they've managed to forget that we lost the bulk of our young male population helping them fight in WWI and WWII. Never support us now! W |

Title: Re: French terror alert level raised Post by KingOfPain on Mar 27th, 2004, 5:38pm Related story. I am not sure of the date of this story. _____________________________________________ France voices objections to placing Hamas and Islamic Jihad on the European Union's list of terror organizations, ynet reported Monday. Diplomatic advisor to President Chirac, Maurice Gourdault-Montagne, is quoted to have said to the Israeli ambassador in France, Nissim Zvilli, that there is no proof that these two organizations are terror groups. "If we find that Hamas and Islamic Jihad are indeed terror groups opposed to peace, we may have to change the EU's stand," said Gourdault-Montagne. "However, we mustn't limit ourselves to one, clear cut, position." _____________________________________________ ;;D |

If Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roche Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette and friends hadn't shown up at Valley Forge, Washington would have been totally screwed. Congress felt his services were worth a reward of $200,000.00. That was a lot of money back then. http://www.ushistory.org/valleyforge/served/lafayette.html In 1824, Lafayette made a triumphant return to the United States, where he was feted wherever he went. When he returned to France, he took with him a plot of American soil, within which he was buried in 1834. And without the french fleet and troops, Cornwallis would not have surrendered: http://www.pbs.org/ktca/liberty/chronicle/episode5.html And please, let's don't forget about this: http://www.pbs.org/ktca/liberty/libertytoday/index.html |

Title: Re: French terror alert level raised Post by t_h_b on Mar 28th, 2004, 9:38pm And Jonny, man, I hate to break this to you, but your beloved skull & crossbones flag is french in origin: The "original" skull-and-crossed-bones was credited to a French buccaneer, Bartholomew Roberts, in the mid 1600s. Various other emblems - crossed-cutlasses for example - were used by later pirates. Pirates hanged at Newport, Rhode Island in 1723 called their flag 'Old Roger', which was an early 18th century nickname for the Devil. And, yes, in thieves slang, rogues were called "rogers". But why "jolly" ? Bartholomew Roberts was nicknamed "Le Jolie Rouge", and in English this was used to refer to the flag and not the man. ;;D |

Title: Re: French terror alert level raised Post by Charlie on Mar 28th, 2004, 9:55pm I don't think England wanted to prolong the decades of fighting the French over here either and I bet that they thought we'd at least play ball. It was damned expensive defending the world's largest Empire and France would soon have the largest European continental empire since Rome, albeit for a very brief time. Bizarre history when you think about it. Charlie |
