Title: Dr. Mauskop
Post by Lizzie2 on Mar 14th, 2004, 10:09am
Hi everyone,

I have a friend who is looking into going to see Dr. Mauskop, and I was wondering if any of you could relate experiences with him or his clinic?  Thanks if you can!

Lizzie :)

I sent someone I work with to see him, and they summed it up like this:  "Definitely a Park Avenue doctor."

You fill out a very long history/questionnaire before you see him.  It's available at his website.  When I saw him the first time, he had read it and knew it.

He is very familiar with CH treatment and medications.  I was going to ask him to double my verapamil from 240mg but he did it without me asking.  Same thing for oxygen and Imitrex--he offered prescriptions for them before I could ask.  Ironically, I had just started taking melatonin a few weeks before I saw him, and was questioning whether it was effective or a coincidence.  He was quite sure it wasn't a coincidence and that I had found effective treatment on my own.

I've only seen him once since then, and it was just a follow-up and prescription renewal visit.  I feel better just knowing that he is available if I need him.

As far as his personality, he is a very calm, reassuring person.  His office staff is as professional as he is and actually took care of something that I faxed in before I could call to tell them I had faxed it.  When  you call his office after hours, the answering machine gives either his cell phone or pager number (I can't remember which)  in case you need to talk with him.

The only caution:  there is a good bit of literature in the waiting room on migraines and that worried me a bit before he saw me so tell your friend not to worry about it.

If you have any specific questions, post them or PM me and I'll try to answer them.

I have also seen Dr. Mauskop of the New York Headache Center (he's the only doctor).  I also filled out paperwork.  It took three weeks to see him initially for he is very busy.  Many of his patients have migraine as well.  He listened to what my neurologist had me doing and then quickly raised my verapamil from 400 mg up to 960 mg SR and also gave me elavil 50 mg once a day.  He is thoroughly knowledgeable about clusterheadaches, mentioned capciacan cream which did nothing but burned, suggested this and that.  I wouldn't so much call him condescending but he certainly wasn't the most pleasant doctor I've visited and definitely not chatty.  The visit lasted all of 7-10 minutes and no words were wasted and no jokes were said.  He stopped my cycle after all else had failed.  I haven't seen him again.  Reassured that he is there, but wasn't necessarily comforting.  But in any event he is definitely worth the trouble to see for he knows his stuff, but there is a wait to see him, especially if you are seeing him for the first time.

I forgot to tell you that because he didn't see me until five minutes after my appointment time, the receptionist actually apologized for being behind schedule.

My initial visit was a little more conversational than Stuey's was and we talked about everything from the need for aerobic exercise to magnesium to whether I considered myself a "hot" or "cold" natured person.   He gave me intranasal Imitrex samples and told me that if I needed any more to just stop by.

Certainly I wouldn't describe him as charismatic but there hasn't been any hint of condescension.  He does seem to be a bit shy.  He is consumately professional and that's exactly what I was looking for in a headache specialist.  I get more than enough absurd conversation and bad jokes from my internist.  (Fortunately he gives good referrals.)

If I had to deal with the sort of people he has to deal with all day long I would probably be visibly annoyed and I don't mean because they all have headaches.  The last time I was there, a very self-important woman wearing sunglasses was talking loudly on her cellphone about her upcoming CT and her migraines in a very annoying tone while rummaging through her purse on top of the reception desk.  Whoever she was talking to never had a chance to get a word in.  She was going at it for at least five minutes and was still rummaging and talking when I was taken back to his office.  Apparently having CT's and a headache specialist is a status symbol in some circles.

Dr. Mauskop is able to charge a lot of money for his time and Stuey's right, he doesn't waste it.   The full charge for my initial visit was $300.  He is contracted with my insurance company so they only paid him $260 plus my $10 copay.  Subspecialists do well here.

He had obviously spent time reading my history and the pages and pages of questions before he saw me and that time should be counted as well as the actual appointment.  All together he spent at least 20 to 25 minutes on me  and there was certainly no indication that he was in a rush.  He answered all of my questions confidently and discussed several topics that he raised in depth.  When I said I needed to write down some of the things he was telling me so I wouldn't forget, he insisted on writing them down himself.

Just like he stopped Stuey's cycle when all else failed, I have gotten my CH under control with Mauskop's help so that I only have a couple of attacks a month (usually from drinking) plus now I have both Imitrex and O2 as abortives for when I do get hit.

Crap, Jonny, you had me thinking I was on the wrong thread after I hit post and up popped your pic.

What is an absesse Yam?  I'm not getting it.

On second thought, maybe you better explain it, Thomas.

Thomas

Well, Thomas, I learn something new every day.  I'll try to work that one into the conversation at work tomorrow.

Jonny, I know your pics are well-distributed on this board, but it wasn't there when I started writing my post and you have to admit a color pic of you with a lampshade on your head holding a big red something isn't exactly what you would expect to find popping up in a thread about Mauskop!
