Title: Re: To our friends in Spain... Post by Kevin_M on Mar 11th, 2004, 9:58pm Other than Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair, Spain's President was the only other person to publically back us against the terrorists. He was the third leader with Bush and Blair who met in the Canary Islands to discuss a response to 9/11 and each emerged to make public announcements on television. I don't know him, but heard him speak last year on television and was highly impressed at his intelligence towards the situation. And for being that brave and standing with us this happens. Yes, to hear of this today was truly sad. The efforts to eradicate those which we set out to do must be stepped up. Their President stood along side us like a brother when the rest of the world sat on the fence. Spain shall live as an ally and brother in my mind for having the GUTS to stand and see the TRUTH and DO something about it with us. And then to have retaliation for it in this way. THERE WILL BE NOWHERE TO HIDE NOW. We will stand by them through this. I am very saddened. To the families, I send my most heartfelt embrace. I will not forget. We may stand alone together, but we will stand together with them, in mourning and in war, to the end. Kevin M |

Title: Re: To our friends in Spain... Post by pubgirl on Mar 12th, 2004, 4:13am I don't know whether your news is reporting the same as ours, but despite the original belief that ETA was behind it, they now think that ETA wouldn't have planned to kill that many people, they prefer to just maim a few for publicity, and that it is Al Qaida behind it. This does make some kind of sense, as Spain were in the coalition right from the start I believe. Worse is that they are also saying intelligence sources say the USA and Britain are going to get hit. I hope to God this is just panic, not real information Wendy |

Title: JRe: To our friends in Spain... Post by Filbert on Mar 12th, 2004, 7:28am Just to back up what Kevin said-Spain have approx 1200 troops in Iraq not many but its cbviously done as a gesture of support.Thats why 100s of lnnocent people have once again lost their lives-these people are cowards and refuse to fight face to face--Ihope they rot in hell!! Title: Re: To our friends in Spain... Post by Peppermint on Mar 13th, 2004, 8:57am Ciao And, come siete? I'm glad you posted this about Carmencita, I was truly beginning to wonder - it seems there is a great deal of bewilderment and a feeling of chaos in Madrid right now. I think its akin to the feelings here in NY on the most horrible day in our history. There were gatherings in our city by scores of people to show solidarity with Spain. Spain has a special place in my heart, and I am with them in spirit. When will this ever end good god... |

Title: Re: To our friends in Spain... Post by Charlie on Mar 13th, 2004, 3:45pm Every time I look or read about this horror, the death toll is higher. I know that Europe has had a lot of this kind of thing but this is monstrous and makes us all sick. So far, I get that it's very likely ETA too. There are certainly a variety of bottom-feeders in the world. This is what happens when people pay too much attention to "religious" meatheads and politicians that don't get that life is so short that it makes zero sense to waste it. As George Carlin says: It's a freak show and we have front row seats. Better to try to make a positive difference and do your best to enjoy the short ride. A few years from now you won't have a chance to clean up after yourself. It's not new but now the whole planet sees what a mean place it can be. Of course over here we worry about Martha Stewart, the Jackson freak show and gay marriage. I'm so very proud. >:( So much suffering. :'( Charlie |

Title: Re: To our friends in Spain... Post by Cerberus on Mar 15th, 2004, 2:06pm While I agree that the atrocities in spain are horrible and also extend my condolances to the families and friends of those involved.... TODAY'S headlines report that a new regime has assumed power in Spain and the same is threatening to pull out any and all support of our actions in Iraq including troops... Interesting how opinions change when the things that others think are atrocious start happening to them, and not just overseas......you'd think the events would have solidified Spain's political stance, instead, they Pussed out. Bottom line.....The U.S.A. cannot trust ANYONE and only gives us more fuel to fight harder. FUCK Spain's new government. Ramon |

It isn't a case of opinion changing. Over 90% of the Spanish people opposed the war all along. Check this link out, Ramon - Aznar's loss has been expected over the past year. http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,925146,00.html Quote:
Bottom line - Europe (and most of the world) still supports the conflict in Afghanistan because the ties between Al Qaeda and the Taleban were clear, and the U.S. was justified in responding. Nato is talking about increasing their committment to the Afghanistan struggle. The war against Iraq was a different animal, and the evidence that Iraq was linked to anti-western terrorism has not been strong enough to convince most of the world. (edited to be less political). |

Title: Re: To our friends in Spain... Post by Melissa on Mar 15th, 2004, 3:23pm My intentions when starting this thread, was just to say I was sorry for the loss of life for the friends and family, etc., of Spain. That's it, nothing else. Everyone has their different political views, and that's perfectly OK with me, just please don't end the thread I started with politics. I know, I know, this is a public open forum and people can write what they want. All I'm doing is making a small request to stay to the tune of which this thread was intended. Anyway, it's an open MB, if ya got beef with other countries policies, I suggest you start another thread. thanks, :)mel |

Thanks for pointing that out Melissa. This thread was/is about to take an ugly political turn and we all know how those usually end up...with a lot of bickering over whose right and whose not. Do we really need anymore of that on here? My condolences to the families and friends of those injured or killed in the bombings. Jim |

Title: Re: To our friends in Spain... Post by floridian on Mar 15th, 2004, 3:38pm For Immediate Release March 15, 2004 Mayor Proclaims Thursday a Day of Mourning Calls on community to pause to remember victims of Madrid bombings St. Augustine Mayor George Gardner has proclaimed Thursday, March 18 a day of mourning to remember the people of Madrid, Spain, devastated last Thursday by acts of terrorism. “There has been an understandable outpouring of grief in our community,” Gardner said. “These wanton acts of terror are deplored by freedom-loving people everywhere, but it is especially painful in our community with its historic legacy and close ties to the people of Spain.” The proclamation asks that the entire community recognize the day as a day of mourning and “To pause at noon on that day as a reminder of our steadfast support of the people of Spain, and the resolve of free people everywhere, that we stand firm for the principles of freedom and against the tyranny of terror.” Gardner has sent letters of condolence and support to the mayor of Madrid, the Spanish Counsel in Miami, and leaders in St. Augustine's sister cities of Aviles and Menorca. Similar communications were sent to St. Augustine from Spain after the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. Gardner also stated that several neighborhood associations are preparing letters of condolence. |
