Title: Diagnosis: Sweetheart Post by toader on Feb 14th, 2004, 9:32pm This post is a valentine tribute to my wife and sweetheart, boomboom. :-* When my headaches started 3 months ago, my regular doctor didn't have a clue. Did the MRI and blood test work up, but me on Depakote, but didn't issue a diagnosis. My wife was suspicious that it was more than just a regular headache. She scoured the Internet for clues and finally arrived at a conclusion. I still have the email she sent to me in early December saying "I found what it is - you have cluster headaches". My condition worsened quickly. I wouldn't take the Depakote. Painful burning sensations developed down the left side of my face and nose. Then the night attacks hit. As soon as I would fall into REM sleep - WHAMMO - the axe to the brain! and the pain!! - the horrible godawful pain!! well, I don't need to tell all of you. . . She called and made an appointment at the headache clinic the next day. Did we have a referral from our doctor? No, we hadn't bothered. Ok, the next appointment was 2 1/2 months away. Ugh - waiting that long with no treatment - that was like a death sentance. She booked the appointment anyway, but she had a plan. The next two days she called each morning just after they opened to see if there was a cancellation that day. God smiled on us the second day and there was a cancellation! Just like that I was in. That's why I call her boomboom. She doesn't miss a beat. Boom, boom and there she is, right on top of it, whatever it is. Believe me men, you would want her running your ship. So in I went to the neuro, got the meds, got some O2, Imitrex and best of all, got on the short list for future appointments. Of course, the story doesn't end there. I still had a very rough time even after the meds started. Didn't sleep for five days in a row. Had to go back and have boomboom help me yell at the neuro to "tweak the meds" before the night attacks stopped. I was a babbling, shivering mess for a long time. I could barely feed and dress myself for a while there. She took several weeks off of work to take care of me. And, of course, she found this site and introduced us to all of you! And for all the dozens of other things I'm sure I've forgotton - taking care of our daughter, shopping, trying to go on with life as usual, I may have the headaches, but she carries the heartache. . . I love you, boomboom! :) |
