Title: pain meds bullitin !!!! Post by cootie on Feb 5th, 2004, 3:04pm I realize alot of you don't take pain meds for your ch but sum do for other reasons or to help with ha's so in a way this is all related because I fear a NEW TREND in medical practice that COULD effect other meds you DO use. I got a letter from my doc (and others are haveing to follow suit in this) that they can no longer prescribe oxycontin and other related pain meds because of escalateing malpractice premiums and lawyers are advertsieng for referrels to patients useing it. I don't abuse the shit and 'it works for my crap' and works most of the day....I don't take it daily either. Freaked me out........cuz what if this was to happen to other meds !??? I would have to go thru special rehab centers for any help now and my insurence WILL NOT COVER it......and it is big bucks. So........guess I am back to gut wrenchin advil maybe !??? Freaked out pissed off pain case Pam |

Title: Re: pain meds bullitin !!!! Post by Karla on Feb 5th, 2004, 4:08pm Pam that is really scarry that the dr, your dr, is bailing out on you. I hope it gets better for you real soon. I can not imagine being without my duragesic patches. They have given me my life back. I hope this doesn't follow suit in other medicines. It is just terrible that it is happening at all. I will be praying for this situation to get better. |

Title: Re: pain meds bullitin !!!! Post by 357Mag on Feb 5th, 2004, 4:10pm Yes Pam, thanks for the head up. Oxycontin is the ONLY pain med that does not cause a rebound HA or out of sequence cycle to start. Just another item to add to the list of topics to discuss with Dept of HHS.....arrrrrggggg! Peace, dan |

Title: Re: pain meds bullitin !!!! Post by cootie on Feb 5th, 2004, 4:58pm I guess my doc is not goin to prescribe it anymore cuz of malpractice insurence.....apparently it has gotten out of hand for his practice and suppose this is an option and one other offices may follow suit with. And yeah it really does work and it 'doesn't' cause rebounds at all........I consider'd it a clean pain free med and liked feelin NORMAL for a day. Too bad my docs patients cant sign sumthing sayin you WILL not sue if you fuck up to continue treatment.....but....of course I've heard contracts like that are not worth the paper there written on ! My doc is an internalist......I am wondering what pain management docs consist of ? There's none in our immediate area tho. My inusurence won't pay nothin till I meet a HIGH deductable even on scripts now......won't pay for exrays or MRI's. So if I search out a pain management place will they require all that plus new exrays.....mine were done last August.......only reason I didn't go thru with physical theropy is cuz my insurence WILL NOT PAY till I meet that deductable and when it does I am only allowed so many sessions a year then it all starts over again. Gee.....what would I do....go do a bunch of drugs and go party at my physical theropy session and abuse it............I'm so pissed and upset.....dunno what to do now. If you see brusises on my head you'll know I beat myself with a brick wall for my next 'spineal' ha !! Take two oxycontin and DON'T call me in the mornin Pam |

Title: Re: pain meds bullitin !!!! Post by Tiannia on Feb 5th, 2004, 5:16pm Oh sweetie I am sorry. Here is vegas there are doctors any direction you throw a stone. Of course noe are all that good. But when I went to a PM doc he did not require a new xray, just wanted all my old records so that he had them and could have record of the former treatment. It helps cause that is all they eal with. Granted i have to see him every month cause they wont do refills but it is better to pay the 15 buck a visit then to be in pain. Now if he could just do something for the headaches. |

Title: Re: pain meds bullitin !!!! Post by Cerberus on Feb 5th, 2004, 9:43pm Coots, I hear ya sister, but, here's the skinny. Oxycontin is currently the #1 abused prescription pain medication available. This is unfortunate for those who need and it works for. The reason it is ill regarded is that it is HIGHLY addictive and even at low doses a body can build a "tolerance" to it and it requires a (seemingly) higher and higher dose to work. Although this is only a psychosomatic reality this is dangerous because it is also a time released medication so people are taking WAY too much thinking it is not working anymore. Kinda like Heroin in more ways than one. I know several people who take it for whatever reasons there may be and none have abused or O.D.ed so far. This is clearly a case of the rotten apples have spoiled the barrel. It has reached almost epidemic proportions, re-hab centers are filling up with abusers and non-abusers alike and doctors are being sued by their patients for THEIR inability to manage its use (apparently few people take the time to actually read and pay attention to the warning labels and dosage instructions). So, instead of patient education/information on its purpose and proper usage, it is easier for doctors to quit prescribing it altogether to avoid getting sued and paying higher malpractice insurance premiums. It sucks...Totally! >:( :-/ Ramon |

Not really. The body does build a physical tolerance to an opiate and is not psychosomatic at all. Tolerance is a phenomenon. For unexplained reasons an addicts tolerance level may be at 9 on a 1-10 scale on Tuesday and the following day the bodies tolerance level will drop to a 2 on a 1-10 scale. Unexplainable. the tolerance level is not produced by what you think it is. It is actually quite the opposite. It may not be what you think it is or what your body has previuosly established it to be. That is what predominantly causes fatal overdose. |

Title: Re: pain meds bullitin !!!! Post by Karla on Feb 5th, 2004, 10:13pm Pam, The pain managment specialist that I see at the headache/pain clinic is a neurologist. He just requested that all my records be sent to him and he charges a normal neuros fee and has a nurse that I can see every 3-6 months and I see him like once a year. So the fees stay down. Just hope that you can find a system like that where you are. |

Title: Re: pain meds bullitin !!!! Post by cootie on Feb 6th, 2004, 12:09am Yeah I understand how the med is abused plus with it bein time released people crush it up or whatever and get a mega dose high and overdose. I understand doc probly jus can't afford the malpractice insurence plus is probly looking ahead to save himself serious law suits from dumb asses that abuse everything. He jus got me started on it a month ago and I have probly only taken it 7 times.....researched it and did NOT want to build up a tolerance so it didn't work. I apprciate knowin it does work so I can tolerate pain days knowing I can be PF a few and sorta tried to create myself a safe plan. I can go back to the percocets for relief off and on and I try never to do any of the meds more then 2 days in a row......sort of tolerance rholette. From my research this kind of med intercepts pain impulses to the brain and replaces it with a good feelin......seems simple enuff. But then you have the ones that abuse it and go for the big buzz and as stated ruins it for the good patients. But here's the clincher that has me BLOWN AWAY................ The four addresses at the bottom of my letter that are recommended by my doctors clinic for further chronic pain treatments or help are......."REHAB CENTERS" !!!!! WTF !??? Glad I am a cautious patient not to be a hooked hunkie Pam Do I get the WHINNER AWARD ? This type ordeal could be a sign of the times for OTHER meds or treatments so thought I'd whine it to ya..............................(I'm still a lil bit freaked out by all this) * thanks for listenin !!!! |
