Title: Think you have it cold? Post by brain_cramps on Jan 28th, 2004, 1:57pm This morning when I woke up, the temperature here in sunny Saskatchewan, Canada was -42C (-43F) with a wind-chill of -52C (-62F). :o At noon, we are enjoying a relatively balmy -38C (-36F) with no measureable wind. Anyone else who thinks they have it cold, THINK AGAIN!!! BTW... All schools, government offices, etc... are still open! dreaming of Negril, grant 8) |

Title: Re: Think you have it cold? Post by Cerberus on Jan 28th, 2004, 2:16pm Ah yes, Having relatives in Canada, I have experienced this type of coldness. I distinctly remember visiting one holiday season and the temperatures dipping so low that advisories were given to not go outside with ANY part of your body exposed to the elements for it would freeze solid in a matter of seconds. As far as I can tell only the "absolute zero" of space can compare. Throw another log on the fire and drink alot of brandy and cognac. It doesn't get THAT cold here, but, whether its Centigrade or Farenheit 0 degrees is damn cold none the less. ;) Still shiverring...... :o Ramon |

It's like riding in a stagecoach. You know it's cold out when you shift your automatic into gear and it takes 30 seconds before the indicator catches up. You know it's cold when your cat starts ripping the wallpaper off because he's going stir crazy. You know it's cold out when your nieghbours cat runs out and sticks to the porch(OUCH.cat). Title: Re: Think you have it cold? Post by Margi on Jan 29th, 2004, 5:05pm Here's some more Canadian weather trivia for all y'all.... Key Lake, Saskatchewan was the coldest place on EARTH yesterday :o Our local weatherdude told us that this morning. Colder than Siberia. Colder than either of the Poles. Mac, we call that the "square wheel syndrome" - I thought I had 4 flat tires the other day! My daughter's car is totally frozen up and it's been plugged in for 4 days. I've got an inch of ice on the inside of my windowsills right now. Have to take all ornaments off the sill or they WILL freeze to the window. It's pretty grim here, folks - no real end in sight either - not for a few days anyway. I know you're probably thinking, it is January in Canada afterall. We honestly haven't seen weather like this in years here though. So much for global warming! ::) I just worry about our homeless, our wildlife, stock and stray animals in weather like this. They found a lady in Edmonton (I think) yesterday, frozen to death on her doorstep with her key in the door. |

Title: Re: Think you have it cold? Post by Mac on Jan 30th, 2004, 3:16am Edmonton has become the city of Fire & Ice the last few days. We had a terrible condo fire a few blocks from where I live. Nobody killed but hundreds have been left homeless. That was on Monday. Yesterday we had a big fire downtown and lost a Chinese market. Five million dollar building. Today a poultry processing plant called Lilydales burned to the ground. Hundreds unemployed now. The fire fighters are totally exhausted. They can only work about 10 minutes before they start to freeze and those huge fire hoses are freezing up in there hands. It's like the Earth is having a massive cluster attack and Western Canada is the eye. Margi, were you affected by the watermain break in Calgary? Had to rescue people who were trapped in there cars by boat! In -35 or whatever. 100,000 people without water. What the fuck is going on? |

This is just stupid cold. Banff, however is only -4° today - and we are -22°. You know it's been cold when you get excited about -22°. We've got snow though today - that's why the temp has warmed a little. It was actually too cold to snow this week. ::) I should probably tell you, Mr. Mac, that I'm putting a motion before OUCH Canada's board this morning that we relocate our headquarters to Lahaina Harbour, Maui. I doubt we'll have any naysayers. |

Luckily it was just a false alarm --- frozen fire-alarm system. Margi - I heard about McKnight Lake ---- LMAO!!! My bro that lives in Calgary was telliing me that in Banff, they are in the midst of an "inversion". Usually the temperatures at the top of Lake Louise and Sunshine are waaaaay colder than at the bottom. For the last few days, he says that it has been about -5C at the top and -20C at the bottom. Go figure ::) Woke up this morning and checked the weather --- said it was -25C with a 25 kph wind for a windchill of -38C. I walked 2 blocks to get milk for my coffee and damn-near froze my ass off. Haha This year in skating class we tried to teach hockey players how to do certain figure skating jumps and moves. It was funny!! Some of the ones in my class can actually do spins and a couple of jumps! LOL Have you ever played broomball? Now that's a bloody sport! It's weather like this that actually makes the ice rink feel warm and tropic-like! LOL ~Lizzie :) |

I agree that Bobby Orr was one of the best to ever put on skates. Its pretty tough to compare the two since they played different positions. Hmmmmm... How to put this... Kinda like comparing Joe Montana to Lawrence Taylor. Both arguable were the best at their respective positions at the time (maybe best ever) and both arguably redefined how their respective positions were played. I know that some will argue with my choices for football players, but to demonstrate the difference I felt I had to pick one each of offensive and defensive players. IMHO it is very tough to compare the two --- same goes for the two hockey players mentioned earlier. grant "Hockey is Life. The rest is just details!" with football coming a close 2nd ;) |

Title: Re: Think you have it cold? Post by brain_cramps on Jan 31st, 2004, 12:56pm Woke up this morning to a whole pile of the white stuff and the sound of spinning wheels. I took a look outside and there was a van with Texas plates that was stuck in the ice-ruts in the middle of the street ---- He probably would have been stuck even if it hadn't snowed. After hearing he fight with the ruts for about 20 minutes, I was gettin a little tired of the noise so I decided to head out to help the guy. I ran into a Chinese guy from down the hall who was sitting at the front door laughing. "damn americans --- can't drive worth shit" I asked him "think we should go tell him to straighten out his wheels? He wouldn't be stuck for long then." His reply: "Naw -- too damn cold!" My source of free entertainment for this Saturday morning. ;;D grant |
