Slowly begin to reintroduce harmful foods. Suggestions are potato chips, pizza with extra cheese, white bread, milk, milk shakes from edible oil products, fried chicken, potatoes deep-fried in beef fat, eggs from chemically raised chickens, barbecued steak with a small portion of overcooked vegetables. Include lots of coffee and donuts to insure an optimum toxicity level.
 
Eat very few raw fruits and vegetables. If you must eat vegetables, make sure the life has been cooked out of them. The best fruits are canned and preserved in sugar syrup.
 
Drink lots of Coke or Pepsi. Canned vegetable juice is fine in small quantities because the enzymes have been destroyed through pasteurization. If you buy fruit drinks made from powder, make sure you see food coloring and synthetic sweeteners and a few unpronounceable chemicals listed in the ingredients.
 
Eat ravenously as if every meal is your last. Swallow food with the least amount of chewing. Eating your meals in less than three minutes will guarantee minimum saliva content. Use butter as a lubricant. Deep-fried foods will also require less chewing.
 
Eat as much as your stomach can take. This forces the muscles that support the stomach to stretch out of shape. Try to eat till you feel stuffed to the point breathing is difficult and sitting requires that you loosen the button of your pants. Mixing proteins, starches, and sugars together with lots of liquid will reduce digestion and increase fermentation, which is necessary to create an achy bloating effect and effective high-powered flatulence.

Avoid fiber at all cost. If forced to eat whole-wheat flour, pick the bits of bran from the bread. This will allow the food to pass more slowly through the intestine so the body may absorb optimal toxic chemicals.
 
Do not exercise. Exercise oxygenates the cells and triggers the lymphatic system to cleanse the body. Try to remain in an inactive, horizontal position. TV watching on a sofa is perfect. Try to take as many snacks as possible to the sofa so you do not have to walk back and forth to the fridge.

Snack regularly during the night so as to curb the body's natural tendencies to detoxify during sleep.
 
Attend lots of potlucks for toxic-diet encouragement from friends. Do not be embarrassed about going up for seconds, thirds and fourths. Arrive carrying donuts and a jumbo coffee in hand in case there is not enough for you. Avoid all talk about discipline and the body being the a temple.

Although I have to admit that this is not exactly how I eat - I normally wash all those foods down with BEER, not Coke or Pepsi!

Last Saturday night Morgan Spurlock won the Documentary Directing award for "Super Size Me," which chronicles his gastric adventures eating three McDonald's meals a day for 30 days.  ...

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound, 33-year-old Spurlock begins his own fast-food journey in high spirits. Three doctors give him a clean bill of health, and he sets off on his journey as the soundtrack blares "Fat Bottom Girls" by Queen. It's McMeal time! Spurlock's rules are that he has to try everything on the menu at least once; he has to eat three full meals a day; and if he's offered the chance to "super size" his order, he must accept.  ...

Just a few days into his experiment, Spurlock is complaining of "McGurgles" and "McGas." After one gigantic meal, he literally vomits. He packs on the pounds, his cholesterol soars, and he becomes lethargic and depressed, much to the horror of his vegan chef girlfriend, who compares his fast-food experiment to a heroin binge and complains about Spurlock's decreased libido: "He gets tired easily. I think the saturated fats are starting to impede the blood flow to his penis and he's having a hard time, you know ..."  

Halfway through the experiment, Spurlock's doctors advise him to quit. (One physician compares him to Nicolas Cage in "Leaving Las Vegas.") But Spurlock sticks it out, ultimately gaining 25 pounds of jiggle while greatly escalating his cholesterol level and his blood pressure.

 My mom likes to tell the story of the time in the early 70's when her and my dad decided to eat only fresh fruits and vegetables. Gastrointestinal hilarity ensued. After a couple of days they changed their minds.
Anyone know if thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1) has any similar effects to the organic nitrates used to treat angina (Isosorbide Mononitrate etc..)?

My guess is that nitrate is nitrate -  thiamine nitrate tends to lose the nitrate when in solution.  A milligram of thiamine nitrate doesn't contain much nitrate - thiamine itself is a fairly large molecule (3 rings).  There are other forms that don't have nitrate - like thiamine hydrochloride.

Food itself can be a "good" source of nitrate -  leafy vegetables are particularly rich.  Fruits and veggies are also a good source of fructose and fructans (starches made of fructose chains instead of glucose)- and some people are fructose intolerant and get the same gut symptoms as people with lactose intolerance.  Fructose intolerance also lowers tryptophan and serotonin in blood.  "Diet: One Size Fits All"  is over simplifying things a bit.

Garlic and Grape Seed Extract also stimulate nitric oxide production - this is probably part of the "French Paradox" where red wine swillers have less heart disease.  There are different nitric oxide subsytems (endothelial, neuronal, blood cell,  etc)  and I don't know which of these are most important to cluster pain.  Other spices and herbs reduce nitrogen oxide production or absorb nitric oxide, including tea, turmeric, magnolia bark, etc.    To make it more complicated,  the compounds in grape seed extract can stimulate or inhibit NO, depending on the degree of polymerization, and as they break down in the body over time, the effect can change.

Don't want to sound lame but I must admit that I do this diet for at least a week right after the beast is gone for sure!  Fast food washed by martinis, black russians, long island iced tea...  you named it.  I'm so afraid by CH that I don't drink at all the rest of the year.  I always feel like a survivor after a cycle and I'm quite happy that my wife endure that kind of burst of joy.
On a side note:  how come nitrate and all be so bad when so much food are made with them?  Do we develope an intolerance over time, kind of an allergy?  I was partcularly thinking about chemicals like perfume and how they can trigger an attack.

Celebration food and drink don't have to be super healthy - it is an occasional thing.  Cant think of many better reasons to celebrate than being suddenly pain-free!

Nitrates and nitric oxide are not all bad - they are not a major problem for the average person. They are useful in zapping microbe invaders and stimulating blood flow.  For some reason, when we are in cycle, they are overproduced and become something to worry about - this is linked to the inflammitory state of the body in clusterheads,  excess IL-1, and other problems.

I occasionally eat under the golden arches, but I wouldn't push a fellow clusterhead towards a month of McDs - moderation in all things.

I'm sorry that folks are not responding to yer "diet" post at the medication forum. Anything that seems to stop CH is worth a look see, especially to those who claim "I've tried everything and nothing helps"

BUTT...I never tied my CH to diet cause when I ate healthy...CH came and went and came and went. When I ate a diet similar to the one you described here...CH came and went and came and went. Throuout my journaling I never identified "triggers" because no matter what I did or didn't do...they came and went and came and went.

Being an episodic makes even determining the efficacy of preventative drugs difficult cause yer always wondering if yer just in yer regular remission or are the drugs making you painfree.

Hi Den

What people don't seem to "get" is that my "detox diet" is not so much about eliminating triggers from the diet, (I myself have never been triggered by anything but booze during cycle) but is more about somehow shocking the body into breaking the cycle. Isn't that most of the docs are trying to do with fucking drugs!!!!

I am not really even sure now (after 2 years of experimenting) that just "healthy eating" as you have tried, will have any effect on whether you suffer from CH or not. I agree they come and go anyway.

My latest thinking (we can change our aopinion with more info!) is that the CH may come no matter what you do or eat, but the shock to the body from the strict detox diet may break the cycle for some.

During this current detox I have lost about 7kgs so far, with 4kgs lost in the first week. This is a big shock to the system. This may be what does the trick?

Here is some info on detox cleansing.

Eliminations during the cleansing process:

Trans-fatty acids
Hardened coating of mucus on the intestinal wall
Toxic waste matter in the lymphatic system and bloodstream

To rant on some more....
I am basically sick of taking drugs to fight this bastard, although I am extremely grateful for Imigran injections, which make this affliction manageable. But, our clan is seriously enriching the drug companies! Imigran/Imitrex is a serious money-spinner.

What motivates the pharmaceutical industry to develop drugs for migraine, CH, etc, not to mention Cancer, Arthritis et al. Is it some humanitarian thing?

LIKE FUCK it is. It's all about profit! If someone did some serious research and discovered a definite link between diet and CH (for either preventing or aborting CH) what would be the benefit to the (paid) researcher? Much better to put more drugs into our bodies to get rid of the pain and make more money than to find a "natural" way to remove the drugs/chemicals produced or stored by our body that produces the problems that cause this pain in the first place. Don'tya think?

So far all I have been offered by Dr Goadsby and co is some “deformed hypothalamus” theory. Nothing really more concrete. No genetic defect, no virus, no bacteria, nothing I can truly believe in. That's why we are all on this board! The same goes for Migraine. The only relief we can get is by “binding chemicals” to the pain receptors or anti-inflammatory drugs or drugs that constrict the blood vessels, or anti-depressants or mind altering drugs etc.

I am sick of using them! But… I will continue to use Imigran injections (at great expense)   :( when I have to, but will attempt to break every cycle if and when they come back with this “SHOCK DIET” or detox diet.

PS for quicker results or if this does not work for you, I believe that a “juice fast” might be even more effective, but I do not have the motivation or willpower to try this for myself. Perhaps others who are worse off than me might do so?

Hi Charlie. You lucky bastard. You have been CH free for donkeys years, so I am so gald you can eat all the brown shit (like burgers and fries?) without problems. Eat away. I love em too, but am willing to give them up for a few weeks now and again to break my cycle!!!

Most people (except total morons) would agree that diet influences health and can cause serious illness. A bad diet (include smoking, car fumes, polluted air, polluted water, radiation, etc, etc, etc into the mix too) can produce anything from rickets to cancer to heart problems to gout to migraines? Why do you really believe CH should be singled out as a non-lifestyle disease/illness? I agree many diseases are not diet induced, like polio, smallpox, malaria, AIDS, etc, but scientists have long ago found the root cause of them and can largely manage to cure us of most them. Maybe AIDS will be next? Some are genetic and scientists may be able to cure them too with gene therapy.

Actually I don't think lifestyle is a primary cause of CH but then I'm a pain in the ass.  My diet of three hotdogs, 1/2 bagel, 26 peanuts, powdered milk and 5 lemon drops has done me well.

Oh, don't knock radiation.

That was all the "shit" coming out of the body, and is just what you would expect to happen for the first week or so! Do you really think this is unnatural???? I get the same effect but it is short lived. Afte a week its all back to normal.

An acid test I was told many years ago to see if you are healthy:

If your shit sinks you have problems, if it floats you are probably healthy. Mine is floating just lately   ;;D

Too simple.  Lots of fat in the diet can make em float.  Flatulent gases can make em float.  Calcium/magnesium supplements can make em sink like a stone (limestone).

Hi Flo,

yeah and if you blood pressure is 120/80, resting heartbeat is 60, you are breathing, not overweight, etc,etc,ect.   :)

If you are taking Magnesium or calcium "suppliments", then no doubt your shit may sink, but why take them if you are eating a healthy diet?

By healthy diet I mean NO DRUGS, NO SUPPLIMENTS, NO VITAMINS, NO JUNK FOOD, NO JUNK DRINK, only honest to goodness real food.

My mission here is to get people to try an alternative to drugs, something you don't see recommended very much on this board. The only "natural" method recommended is the highly illegal (for whatever reason), non-medically supported fungus therapy, which I am sure works great. I would probably try it if I could, but can't. This is not the USA.

I am no expert by any means but I reckon I have hit on something that works for me.

I say again:

It may well not be a healthy diet that prevents CH, but, for me at least, I have found that a few weeks of "shock therapy", i.e. a very strict, low calorie (by it's very nature) diet of ONLY fresh fruit, fresh, veg, and lots of water which makes you rapidly shed pounds has broken 2 CH cycles for me within a week of undertaking the diet.

It may be in my mind, it may be coincidence, but there may be 100's of you guys out there who could be helped by this "theory" of mine, but are not willing to give it a go.

Why not? If you say you are willing to try anything to get rid of these fucking debilitating headaches, then stop taking the drugs which have all the horrible side effects and suffer for a week or so from the "natural" side effects of this diet - the shits, weight loss, "poison headache" and flu like symptoms which rapidly pass so you can get on with your lives.

Preach, preach, blah, blah ,blah   :)
