Title: Re: Alternative Meds Post by floridian on Sep 20th, 2004, 1:14pm Depends on what you mean by alternative. I use magnesium and melatonin regularly; these have been shown to help some people in clinical trials. In the US, melatonin is a "food supplement" and seen as alternative. In Europe, melatonin is considered a hormone and requires a prescription and costs 20 times more than in the US. I also use 5-htp, B-vitamins, CoQ10, cayenne pepper, peony root, turmeric and green tea. I believe that these have helped me, but one person's experience is not controlled research - it is common for episodics to have good years and bad years, even to have the clusters dissapear for years at a time. There is a scientific rational for all of these treatments (5-htp, B-vitamins and CoQ10 have been demonstrated effective in reducing migraine, but not tested on clusters). Green tea and turmeric scavenge nitric oxide and reduce the inflammatory cascade, although no studies have been conducted specifically on clusters. B-vitamins improve a variety of metabolic processes, including serotonin synthesis. Peony root reduces CGRP production and increases expression of the A20 gene, which is neuroprotective against NMDA/glutamate but again, I don't what (if anything) has helped me or if I am lucky. |

Ahem, at the last counting there were 48 different countries in Europe, each with it's own legislation on health matters. Some time ago I ask the pharmacist about melatonin. He told me it was considered a food supplement and therefore not in his assortment (oh yeah, but he sells all this homeopathic crap >:() Anyway, he ordered some for me, it took 2 weeks and he charged a 'pharmacy price' of $ 20.00 for 30 capsules. I could probably get them much cheaper at a health food store, but I didn't follow up as melatonin did nothing for my CH nor my sleep. PFNADs, Ueli [smiley=smokin.gif] |

Title: Re: Alternative Meds Post by floridian on Sep 20th, 2004, 9:10pm My apologies to the 48 nations of Europe (2 more and you could call em states!). Yes, I suppose that there is a great deal of variation between govt. policies in those 48 sovereign states, although there has been some standardization via the EU. Glad to hear that melatonin is available and affordable in the Switzerland, Ueli. In Austria, the cost is only about 4x more than the according to this article, but I think their US price is on the high side. Quote:

Title: Re: Alternative Meds Post by Charlie on Sep 20th, 2004, 9:11pm Basically, if you can find the stuff in the "organic" sections of your super market, mall health food store, or on ebay, it will be pretty useless. Clinical is the way to go with CH. It's a better place to spend money on this horror. Charlie |

Title: Alternative Countries..... Post by Mr. Happy on Sep 21st, 2004, 2:09am on 09/20/04 at 20:36:01, Ueli wrote:
Oh, great. You got 48 different countries, we got 50 different states, and there's still communist Canada and Central America to account for. Bugger that. Too much math. Ueli, I can get 60 three mg melatonin pills for $5.00 at the local high priced health food store.......gawd knows what that comes out to in Euro's. Do the conversion, and I'll send you a 5 gallon bucket full of the suckers........... (metric conversion not included.) I still ain't sold on melatonin, but at that price, I'd chew baked whale shit if it helped in the least. I have a cat, too..... RJ |

Title: Re: Alternative Meds Post by karma on Sep 21st, 2004, 8:05am Jaylve, So far most of the treatments available, deal with the pain and not necessarily with the problem. There has been some discussion on the affects that Triptans have on the cycle in the long run. Some say the triptans make the cycles longer and use them as a last resort or not at all and some need to get relief ASAP and use them alot. How you choose to deal with it is a personal choice. My only recomondation would be to use as little medication as possible. Oxygen, properly used seems to be a great relief for a ton of people. Properly used is the key so if you go that route make sure to get yourself educated. I am episodic and get hit every couple of years for 2-3 weeks. My ha's are usually severe and build up to 2-3 times a day. This year I got educated through this incredible site and tried Zomig tabs, Verapamil and Melatonin. I also realy concentrated on relaxing, and drinking lots and lots of cold water during the hits. The next time (god forbid) I will stay away from the meds. It is my feeling that the meds stretched a 2-3 week cycle into a 6 week cycle but I'm not sorry I tried them. |
