Title: Appetite and the beast
Post by ArCane on Sep 15th, 2004, 1:30pm
Has anyone else noticed a decrease in appetite when in a cycle?  I can feel my stomach is empty, it growls alot, but I just dont want to eat.  My CH, when very painful, makes me vomit.  I know this is an atypical trait, so is this the reason or is it because of the pain in general or something else.  Even if I get high, (pot doesnt effect mine and is my subsitute for alcohol in cycles) I dont have the munchies and still cant eat.  Ive lost alot of weight this cycle which is ok I guess but it still freaks me out.  I like to eat alot and a cycle will stunt my appetite everytime.  I go from eating 3 times a day with seconds to eating 1 time a day with no seconds.  It seem to help my CH if I eat right but its so hard to do when you cant even eat one spoonful of soup without feeling full.

About the vomit part, not unheard of but very unusual.
Are you on any medication? Perhaps it is causing it. And some meds could be also be causing the lose of appetite.

Substituting one habit for the other? Have you considered getting help for your problem?

I'm one of the clusterheads who also does not eat while in cycle.  I've been episodic for 30 years.  The lack of appetite and avoiding eating has become over the years part of the whole "syndrome".  It started out that when i ate an attack always followed.  So - over the years i began to avoid eating  :P  Kind of the same thing as when I discovered that consuming alcohol always brought on an attack - no drinky when clustering.  When in cycle now, i pik and nibble and avoid becoming full.  It's partly because when you get full your body chemistry changes and can trigger an attack.  I'm sure it's also partly pyscho-sematic (sp)....Just a "thing" i have associated with clusters.

Medications can also play into it.

*About the pot, FYI i found it made headaches worse during cycle....

Good news is the cycle is ending and i am svelt 8) :D

I guess you could call it a decrease in appetite..........for me, it's more of a "What Tastes Good Now" kinda thing.
Damned little tastes good....except chili, beef jerky and canned sardines in mustard. Hell of a diet; it gives you the "winds" something terrible.

I just blame it on the meds,
RJ

Reality is the real problem.  Besides I use drugs recreationally, not habitually.  Its not like I do it everyday or anything.  Sometimes I just need an escape.

As for meds, I am currently med free.  The meds that my insurance will cover dont work and the meds I want to try, like an imitrex injector, isnt covered and I dont have that kind of cash.  America's health care system sucks ass.

Marc is chronic, but for a long time his appetite was crap. He lost 2 stones but is now fighting back. He was the same where an attack used to trigger off an attack so he would dread eating. Now he has oxygen he eats his food and goes straight on the gas!

He is slowly putting weight back on, slowly getting him back to looking alive!

I don't want to eat when dancing or shadowing but right after the Trex kicks in and I am PF for more than 5 minutes, look out.  I have a "window" of about 10 minutes that I can eat anything in site.  Chalk it up to being wiped out by the attack and having to build up for the next one.  OTOH, the week or so of peaking, I don't eat, sleep or anything.  The Pred makes me hungry as all get out but if I eat anything, and my stomach is so upset that I could eat a whole jar of Tums.

I sometimes get nauseous from the pain, but I don't EVER lose my appetite. I wish!  Taking a break from stuffing my face (with all the wrong foods of course) would be a side effect from CH that I could sure use. :(
I find that I indulge myself more when I'm hurting - like today's breakfast - a bacon sandwich with butter and 2 Krispy Kreme donuts :-/

When I'm dealing with shadows I have a huge appetite, but when my CH starts to kick my ass I can not eat anything.Hell, just to chew or swallow,I feel like my head is going to blow.As for pot if I'm in a chronic period(always)the pot puts me to a kip 7 or 8.Haven't smoked a joint since I've been in this cycle now for about 5 years.I'd love to smoke a nice one and drink a good cold beer or glass of wine, but it's not worth the risk.David :-/
