Title: Muscular anatomy question
Post by IndianaJohn on Aug 13th, 2004, 9:23am
Hi everyone, just a quick question.  I'm trying to find the name of a muscle that goes into spasms when I'm having a CH.  It's the one that is on your cheek towards the back that helps you chew.  It pops and cracks alot when I'm in cycle and during a CH it just goes nuts.

I tried looking for it on the net, but my brain is fried from last night and I'm just not thinking well today.

Any info would be greatly appreciated

I don't know the name of the muscle ...
but the area is the Maxilla & Mandible Craniovertabral Joints.  If it's the part by your lower ear that goes up and down

Glad your feelin' better.

thanks for the vibes Eric, much appreciated!

The area that I'm looking for info on in front of and below the ear.  If you put your finger between your molars, your finger would  be just in front of it.

Thanks,

John

Sounds like the lateral pterygoid muscle.  Runs from the sphenoid bone to the mandible (jaw) and the disc at the tempromandibular joint (TMJ).  Its nerve origin is the 3rd branch of the Trigeminal Nerve (CN#5).

In the past I have tried to pressure point this muscle during a cluster attack.  It may help (???) but usually my jaw just gets sore!

And yes, spasms of this  muscle can cause derangement and dysfunction of the TMJ producing clicking and locking.

Hope this helps.

Doug

Yep, that's the one for TMJ.  My oral surgeon and dentist both always check that one, and always tell me how well developed it is *L* (I have TMJ).
I know you can't relax when getting hit, but when you aren't, try to keep it as relaxed as possible, no gum-chewing etc . . it really helps.

thanx doug, that helps alot.  I've tried to work mine over too.  mixed results too.  though sometimes if I "crack it"  it will make the worse, so I try not to during a HA.

thanks again,

John
