Title: Imitrex Inject took me from PF to KIP-10 Post by Joshman420 on Jun 28th, 2004, 6:47pm Hi All, I have been a cluster sufferer for the last 5 years. I get a 6-8 week cycle, pretty much every summer. My most recent cycle started just about 3 weeks ago ... and I immediately started taking Prednisone and Verapamil. I am happy to report that these seem to be helping. I am still getting daily shadows, but I had not gotten a full blow attack .... UNTIL .... one of my shadows kept progressively getting worse this past Saturday night ... KIP5 ... KIP6 ... KIP7, OK time to get out my Imitrex Injectable (first time this cycle) ... I took the injection, and felt relief within a few minutes. I was satisfied. thinking it would only get better. And then, without any warning ... about 5minutes after my injection ... I instantly went into a KIP10. Uncontrollable tears, screaming ... sweating ... my wife nearly freaked out ... she said she l had never looked that way ... (too me this is but a blur now). After 15 minutes the attack went away, and then I just felt that wore-out exhausted feeling of being hit in the across the face with a baseball bat. (you guys know this feeling, Im sure) I am curious if anyone as ever experienced something similar to this with Imitrex Injections ? I am very very hesitant to use it again. I just wanted to share my experience... and see what any of you guys thought about it. Thanks. JOSHMAN |

Title: Re: Imitrex Inject took me from PF to KIP-10 Post by D on Jun 28th, 2004, 8:10pm Imitex never worked for me either. It always made the next attack more severe for me too. Sorry you had to learn this the hard way. fyi: Verapamil and predinisone have been equally unkind. Do you use Oxygen ? Peace and Positive Energy D |

Title: Re: Imitrex Inject took me from PF to KIP-10 Post by Kris_in_SJ on Jun 28th, 2004, 8:41pm Although I've never had problems with Imitrex injects, it sounds a little like a rebound HA to me (especially since it was only 15 min). Fortunately, most of my shadows stay in the 3-5 range. When a full-blown cluster is on me, Imitrex does it every time. O2 might work better for you. If I've learned nothing else, it's that we all respond differently to different things. Don't give up. Sending you good wishes for PFDAN! Kris |

Imitrex works for me about 9o% of the time...there is the other 10% that it doesn't do jack even after 2 injects 30 minutes apart. But thas when I'm in a 10+ anyway! Seems nothing works then and I just have to ride it out, or seek getting knocked cold. |

Title: Re: Imitrex Inject took me from PF to KIP-10 Post by Giovanni on Jun 28th, 2004, 9:15pm I believe you probably waited too late for the injection at around a kip 7. If you would have taken it earlier, I believe it would have worked. Who knows for sure? John |

Title: Re: Imitrex Inject took me from PF to KIP-10 Post by don on Jun 28th, 2004, 9:17pm I have never heard of a triptan inducing a CH. My guess is you were heading for a Kip 9 anyway and the imitrex failed to abort it. It happens. |

Has, in my opinion, a questionable CH diagnosis in the first place. |

Title: Re: Imitrex Inject took me from PF to KIP-10 Post by Eb on Jun 29th, 2004, 9:04am The one thing I have noticed recently is that after using Imitrex, the severity of my HA increases faster than normal~~and then the injection kicks in & does it's job.... Still works almost every time, just something more to throw in the mix... |

This is what I noticed this cycle, never before. Maybe it had to do with frequent dosing of 2 mg., I dunno. Maybe Topomax had something to do with it. Anyway, my arteries felt bruised and it really freaked me out. Pam |

Title: Re: Imitrex Inject took me from PF to KIP-10 Post by Jayne on Jun 30th, 2004, 6:45pm After I have injected myself with a third of a 6mg dose of imitrex, I feel the headache get REAL BAD, then moments later it's gone. I kind of equate it to the demon trying to hold on to your skull with it's tallons as it is being ripped out of your skull, then eventually he lets go. And I too get that orgasmic feeling as well, it's the pain leaving. |

I think John is right. It's all about timing. Sometimes it doesn't work though, even if you do time it right. Hope it works next time for you. Sending vibes for a short cycle this time around. |

Title: Re: Imitrex Inject took me from PF to KIP-10 Post by Crying on Jul 3rd, 2004, 1:45am Acuttally now that I get more frequent Ch with 7-10 kip I would be willing to use imitrex again even if it still felt like my head was set on fire! Luckily zomig spray works a charm and the O2 is wonderful. So I don't need to put my self through painful trex injections /reactions to get rid of the CH pain. I just thought people should know that some people have a negative reaction to trex but there are other triptans that can work great. Everybody is different. The same meds dont work the same for everybody. You have to keep on trying until you find what works for you. |

1-2%?? This is a very common side effect mentioned here on this site, and I would never consider it as a negative side effect. Compared to tightness of the throat and/or chest along with heart attack and stroke, it's nothing. A doc who thinks that is not a common side effect is not familiar with the medication IMO... Chris |

I took 6mg that time. The neurologist on duty told me that was because the dose was to high. My neurologist told me the same thing. Now i take 2.5mg an it works perfectly. go figure. to much of a good thing. krista |
