Title: Sports and Triggers
Post by Mac_Muz on May 16th, 2004, 3:49pm
I am looking to seek out what triggers a CH, with any sporting events and summertime things that happen to you folks..

I shoot modern guns and black powder flintlocks, and wonder if doing that could bring an attack?

I ride a motor bike on the street, and can smell new to me smells these days.. Since CH happened my nose works for the first time in my life... I have a deviated septum, and have chronic bronchitis, and that kills smelling things more or less..

It might be total coincidence, but near the begining of CH for me I was stung by a hornet..

The other day I got in my truck and it might have been 100+ inside it with full sun and closed windows, and I got that sting.. Nothing more, but I had to wonder..

If I suffer an attack while driving a car, truck, or bike what can I do to get home or other?

If I try imetrix and that works, can I drive and ride with that in my system? (Injected type at 2mg's and the Q Tip trick)

What about camp fire smoke? I do historical re-enacting and there is camp fire smoke with better than 1,000 camp fires. At times the weatha' stalls and the smoke can linger in early evening when the winds die down..

On cooler eveings I sometimes have a fire inside my lodge, and then there is smoke too.. Or I cook inside if it is raining..

There must be other woodsmen and woods women here right?... Some basics would be real nice... I don't expect many black powder shooters really, as this place thank god doesn't have that many people, but some of you must do some of these things...  Mac

CH affects us all in a different way.  Just like not all meds work for everyone.  Guess that's what makes all this so complicated.  Would be great if all of us could do the same treatment and get successful results.  But it just isn't so.

As far as triggers.....not sure that there are triggers for all of us.  I, too, have become more alerted to smells and odors.  I do not have a known trigger.  However, before I had CH, I was always a bit sensitive to Petroleum products.  Also, oil based paints, thinners, and liquid stripping products.  So, I definitely stay away from these things when in cycle.

Heat does affect some CH'ers.  Summertime weather is hard on some folks.  I bass fish, and have fished in temps in excess of 103 degrees.  Not a problem for me.  I think it's because when I tournament fish, the adrenalin rush keeps the beast away.

You have to try and not let CH take the things from you that you enjoy.  Continue with your shooting....if it should create a problem for you, then you may have to make an adjustment.   Keep your meds with you at all times.  NEVER leave home without your meds.

I've always been hit at night....usually an hour and half after going to bed.  I don't know how your cycle runs, and if you normally get hit during the day.  Suppose if I did get hit while driving....I would pull over....take my meds....and wait it out.  I've never taken the trex....not sure if it would affect your driving or not.  Others here would have to answer that one.

By all means continue with the hobbies and sports that you love so much.   I was a bit skeptical about continuing with my bass tournaments......but I refuse to give in to the beast.

Sounds like you have a great hobby.....I love the outdoors, also.   Be optimistic.....I think you can carry right on with the things you love so much.

PF vibes and.......heavy stringers     8)

Alcohol and naps are my only known triggers.
I've driven many, many times getting hit. I know it's not the safest, or the funnest thing, but sometimes you've gotta do what you do. If you feel unable to drive, pullover. I've done that too.
I seriously doubt that the sting had anything to do with it. Maybe, but....  :-/
Yes, it shouldn't be a problem to drive on imitrex.

If you keep a couple shots on you and can have an O2 tank somewhere in the vicintity, you can feel pretty safe and secure for several days.

TxBasslady,
Thanks for the support. I have no intent what so ever to give up much to these Ch's. If anything they tick me off more than anything else.. I have never been much of a Golden Boy and had to work and fight to keep what ever I have, so battle with this is just one more battle to me.

So far my "times" have been evenings earliet at 5PM and latest at 11 PM.. I get hit for about 3 days at one time, then the time moves elsewhere for 3 days and so on.

Oddly my last was last Thursday when these CH's were really getting going.. Then they vanished leaving a dull pain in their place all day long. The dull pain is so dull I have to stop and thingk about it.

Superpain,... I associate this sting with a on coming attack... Umm Yeah we have 2 stings here don't we...

You are saying the hornet sting might not have a thing to do with the problem..  That might well be. I had forgotten all about it myself, but then re-called that event, and it made me wonder.

The Sting in my nose is a signal an attack is coming.. That is the same sting I think others share with me.

This sting has nothing to do with hornets.. During the day it will occur but never brings on a CH.. In the evening however the rules change, and I watch the sting then which occurs in my nostril.

I hope I am correct and share this sting with others..

Napping gets you huh...  I put my beers aside going on 5 weeks now.. I am not a big drinker anyway, but that idea was a wish the other day.

As 11 Pm comes I watch like a hawk for signs of an attack, yet have been free now since the last O2 worked. That was last Thursday!

I have this feeling that the CH will return soon, but I can't tell.

Sitting here this instant there is that stinging as well. During the day it comes and goes and is not normal for me except these past weeks.

Maybe there is something else with Spring also happening. My blue car was green with pollens untill a T storm passed thru yesterday...

I have no known allergies, but who knows what changes might occur.. I had no known sence of smell untill now either...

Well a friend needs help with a project, so I must go and do as i can ..  Thanks for hangin in with me.....  Mac

Mac,
If I am understanding your post correctly.....except for the "shadow" of a CH.....you are relatively PF.  Last bad one was last Thursday??

This is just a suggestion.....I was very skeptical about it till I tried it and it worked.  Have you tried Melatonin?  Have you read the posts about it?  I learned about it from Thomas.

I went on a Prednisone taper last Sept, while in a full blown cycle.  From the first dose of Pred, I was totally PF.  I went for 197 days with no CH, no shadow, no inkling that was CH related.  On day 198, damn near exactly after being asleep for 1 1/2 hours, I awoke with a CH.  This was about a 7 on the Kip scale.  For a few days after this, I had no more CH.   The next week, it started again....always after going to bed.  These were not bad hits.....probably 3 to 5 on the Kip scale.  I promptly went to Wally World and purchased Melatonin.
I started out with 1 pill (3mg.) before going to bed.  This worked great for about 10 days.  Then again.....the ha's broke thru, and I upped the Melatonin.  I took several pills and cut them in half, and started taking 1 1/2 pills every night before bed.  This worked !! Stopped the CH...had no shadows...nothing.  I continued to take the 1 1/2 pills ( approx 4.5mg.) for about 10 days.  Then I decided to cut back to the 1 pill (3mg.) and see how things would go.  That was a couple weeks ago, and I have had no ha's, no shadows.

Just something to think about.....if you haven't tried it, this may be a good time.  Since you do not seem to be in cycle.....but appear to be having some shadow effects, you should get some and take it before you go to bed, and see if this will help.  You can start off with whatever dosage you want.....I chose to start with the 3mg.  But you can try a larger dosage and see if this helps...if it does...then after a couple weeks you can cut down to a smaller dosage.  It really seems to be a miracle drug for alot of us here.  Best thing....it's cheap and you don't need a rx.

Worth a shot !!

Best wishes to you.....hope you have lots of PF time,

Jean
