Title: Re: BLACK SPOTS Post by floridian on May 12th, 2004, 10:22am I get heavy duty aura, but it has never been associated with migraine or cluster headaches. Mine involves a blind spot in the center of my vision, and flashes, lightning bolts, and jaggedy lines in the peripheral vision. The blind spot usually starts out as a blink, but can park itself for 10-15 minutes. Somebody posted a link to a graphic a while back that gave a good picture of what aura is like. Aura is not in the eyes - its caused by a 'spreading depolaraztion' of the visual cortex in the brain. Kinda like that part of the brain falls asleep (though its not normal like sleep). |

Title: Re: BLACK SPOTS Post by floridian on May 12th, 2004, 10:31am Here's one graphic - its not bad, but I've seen a better artistic interpretation somewhere. This one does show the blind spot. http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/18-Mar-2004/7242-migraine_aura_demo_sm-1.jpg |

Usually cycle refers to an episode of cluster headaches - like "my July and August cycle" that I get most every year. Or are you chronic and making a joke? |

Title: Re: BLACK SPOTS Post by Margi on May 14th, 2004, 12:09pm what you're referring to here is phosphenes and they are a common prelude to migraine but some cluster sufferers experience this as well. for a migrainer, it's usually a signal that they've got about 20 minutes to get into a dark room and ...uh...get the bucket ready. :( For classic migraine, this is indeed the start of the aura phase, next comes numbness of face/hands, general confusion, and fear for what lies ahead in the next 12 - 72 hours. Seeing those spots is similar to looking at something too bright, a flash camera, shiny chrome on a vehicle or the sun. But you don't recover in the same way. Floridian's exactly right though - it's not in the eye, it's in the brain so closing your eye doesn't make it go away - you can just see the "shimmeries" brighter with your eyes closed. It's a horrible feeling. I had it last for about 45 minutes yesterday and was trying to figure out how I could make the 30 minute drive home (not being able to see completely is sometimes not a good idea when you're driving in heavy traffic!). Lucky for me, yesterday I was blessed with only an occular migraine as that link describes instead of a full blown one. It still scares the crap out of you and the ONLY thing that makes it go away is time. Good thing to tell your boss though - "you'll have to excuse me for half an hour. I'm having a vascular event at the moment". It's a feeling you can't put into words, really, without experiencing it and even just seeing those pictures is enough to make a migrainer cringe. It's not fun. |

Title: Re: BLACK SPOTS Post by TxBasslady on May 16th, 2004, 11:32pm Definitely have to agree with Bill....the racer dude. Sounds like "floaters" to me. Has nothing to do with your medication or the lack of. These "floaters" come and go....they move around in the eye. When they are stationed in your line of vision, you will see them. Other times....they "float" about the eye. Some "floaters" appear to be like spider webs.....sometimes, you will see just a black spot. Other times, you may see several black spots. This has to do with the retina. My Opthamalogist said there was little to be concerned with...they are just irritating. However, he did tell me that if the small black spots become enlarged...like if they take up the area of vision....it was a sign of a detached retina. Check out "floaters" on any search engine. It's really interesting to read about. PF vibes, Jean |

Title: Re: BLACK SPOTS Post by mynm156 on Jun 6th, 2004, 3:25pm My black spots DO get larger yet it only seems like that when I have one comming. Then they god away. Then I get the little ones. Yet they are still there if I close my eyes. Know what I mean so it seems to me that these are more in the Brain than in the eye itself. Does that make sence? MYNM156 |
