I refuse to call them headaches. It's like comparing torn knee tendons to a twisted knee!

I've heard all the different versions from OUCH,

Synonyms: Bing-Horton Syndrome, Histaminic Cephalalgia, Cluster-Migraine, Paroxysmal Nocturnal Cephalgia, Red Migraine, Erythromelalgia of the Head, Sphenopalatine Neuralgia, Migrainous Neuralgia

But has there been any consensus. I've called it Migrainous Neuralgia in the past but too many only hear Migraine and think it's the same (no offense to migraine sufferers, I get them too usually before a cluster cycle starts, but I'd trade one Cluster for an all day migraine!)

When I have presented in more medical terms I get more people listening to me describe it and sometimes educating friends, family, coworkers etc. just helps the pain every so slightly.

Doesn't matter what you call it. They won't understand.

Kinda like Harley Davidsons saying...
If I have to explain you wouldn't understand...

I think suicide headaches is about the closest verbal description to doing it any justice.

The Official name?

Unsurprisingly it is "cluster headaches".

The others are old names before the condition was properly identified.

Personally I call it Freddy Kruger ;;D

I think it would be great if CH's were renamed without the word headache in the description at all. Originally, AIDS had a different name that was offensive to homosexuals so they changed it. I find the words "Headache" and "Migraine" just as offensive when describing a cluster attack. (Also, no offense to anyone suffering from other types of headaches or migraines). It immediately suggests a more tolerable condition than it is. Maybe we need a thread on name suggestions! That would be fun.

Episodic or chronic Trigeminovascular Neuralgia.

Just to clarify the AIDS comment: it was originally called GRID (Gay-Related Immune Disorder). When it became apparent that the syndrome could affect more than gay men, and to remove some of the stigma, the medical community agreed on AIDS.

We now return you to your regular programming...

This term is usually more widely accepted as references to a pain in the ass rather than the head.

Vangogh71,

when I did an essay about CH last year, I found out that there are indeed many names refering to CH. When I was diagnosed, my neuro called it horton's neuralgia and cluster headaches. Personally, the suicidal headache works best with me.

I always call the episode an "attack" ...simply because it affects my whole body in some way or another... I refuse to use the term "headache" ...it is so much more than that...

I always thought Hortons Histamine Headache was how they were first referred to. Now I just call them those spineless f*ckers on the right side of my head.

The IHS classifies CH as a subform of Trigeminal Autonomic-Cephalalgia (TAC). Perhaps you can call it a Trigeminal Autonomic-Cephalalgia of the Cluster variety. Should impress the unenlightened well enough.

This could work, Doctors like things with three letters I.E Eposodic Trigeminovascular Neuralgia (ETN) or Chronic Trigeminovascular Neuralgia (CTN). This sort of thinking would bring too much order to our maladey though and the raft of crap to get anyone to listen to ya is unreal.
