Title: Local paper headlines for Sean... Post by Ree on Nov 9th, 2003, 4:05pm NATICK -- Sean Munger's friends and family were relieved to get the 22-year-old Natick native back home safe yesterday after an eight-month stint with the Marines that included stops in Iraq and Liberia. Munger, a sergeant with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, got a surprise welcome at Logan Airport from his parents and girlfriend. He was rushed back to his home on Laconia Road in a limo escorted by police cruisers. "It was a pretty shocking thing. I wasn't expecting much," Munger said as he smoked a cigarette on his back porch. "I was expecting nothing and ended up with a police escort and a limo." The small blue house yesterday afternoon was packed with friends and family celebrating Munger's safe return. An American flag hung outside the home and a sign was taped next to the door that read, "Welcome home, Sgt. Munger." Munger's mom, dad and stepdad were relieved to see their son, who has not been home for a year. They said they worried about him every day and were glued to television news reports during the war. Munger spent a month in the northern Iraq city of Mosul before combat ended. "I feel apart when I saw him. The tears poured out of me," said his stepfather, David Theriault. "I knew he was coming back because he's way too smart. He's special, the kid's special." On the back porch, Theriault toasted Munger with a shot of vodka, declaring, "To somebody I love so much, and I'm so happy to see you home." Munger comes from a family with deep military roots. His grandfather served in the Army during World War II and landed in Normandy on D-Day. His father, Michael, was in the Marines and so was his brother, Scott, who is now in the Army and will ship off to Iraq in January, according to his mom. Michael Munger wanted his son to come home with a hero's welcome and got him the limo and the police escort. "As a parent, you worry every day, even if there's no fighting," Michael Munger said. "You watch TV and say that could be me. Every day you could hear a knock on the door" and be told your son is dead. Munger spent most of April in Mosul and then went to Djibouti in eastern Africa. He spent two months in Liberia in the western part of the country. "I've experienced things a lot of people will never understand or be able to comprehend," Munger said. Before the war started, Munger's unit waited off the coast of Crete on the USS Iwo Jima. They got word to go and were flown into Iraq, where they secured an airfield in Mosul. The Marines landed in the middle of the night, he said, and Munger could see tracer fire lighting up the sky. "When we first arrived we had no clue what was going on. It was like, 'We're going to Iraq. Pack your gear. Let's go,' " he said. Munger, who joined the Marines after graduating from Natick High School, will stay at home for another month and then head back to his base at Camp Lejeune, N.C. In another six months, he'll be sent back to Iraq, predicted his mom, AnnMarie. By then, she may have two sons in the war-torn country. "It makes me nervous, but he's a good guy," she said of Sean. "Their dad was a Marine, and they're following in his footsteps," she said. PS My real name is Ann Marie..............love ree Back to top |
