Title: Re: imitrax survay neaded about 1/2&1/3 dosage Post by Mark C on Nov 5th, 2003, 7:21pm DOSAGE RECOMMENDATIONS The recommended adult dose of Imitrex is 6 mg injected subcutaneously (SC). A second 6 mg injection may be administered after 1 hour if symptoms of migraine return. The maximum recommended dose in 24 hours is two 6 mg injections separated by at least 1 hour. If side effects are dose-limiting, then lower doses of Imitrex may be used. Smaller doses of Imitrex may also prove to be effective although the proportion of patients obtaining adequate relief is decreased and the latency to that relief is greater. (See Table 1 of Product Information for dose-response relationship.) There is a potential for monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors to alter sumatriptan pharmacokinetics (increased systemic exposure). Therefore the use of Imitrex Injection in patients taking MAO inhibitors is ordinarily not recommended. In patients receiving MAO inhibitors, decreased doses of sumatriptan should be considered (5). In patients receiving doses lower than 6 mg, only the single-dose vial dosage form should be used. Although patients may wish to save a partially used vial for future dosing, Imitrex Injection is a preservative-free solution, and sterility cannot be assured once the single-dose vial is opened. From what I have gathered no more than 6mg helps, but less than 6mg may certainly help. I fully intend on trying 3mg dose...if I ever need it again! ;;D Posted by Karen on December 31, 1999...... Hi:), The imitrex vials are "single" dose vials, which means that you are only supposed to draw one dose out of each vial and then discard. This is because once the vial is punctured by the needle the first time, there is no preservative inside to keep it sterile. However, i believe it's still a more safe practice than reusing the self-injector needle:) The vials come in the following concentration: 6mg in 0.5ml. The vial only has 0.5ml in it. So if you wanted to give yourself a 3mg dose the correct reading on the syringe would be 0.25ml. A 2mg dose would be equal to 0.16ml. From previous information listed on the site, I've read that most people get relief without using the full 6 mg dose and also by lowering the dose, have less risk of rebound headaches. You also have the advantage of being able to get more uses for your money. If you go to your local pharmacy, chances are that they will not have the imitrex vials on the shelf. I'm a pharmacist, so I was able to research what products were availa-ble. But, here is the NDC number.... They can use this to special order the vials in for you: NDC# 00173-0449-02. I wish they made a larger vial!!!! But knowing the insurance companies, they probably wouldn't pay for a larger vial anyway!!! I hope this info helps you out:) Karen PFDAN's Mark |

Title: Re: imitrax survay neaded about 1/2&1/3 dosage Post by Roxy on Nov 5th, 2003, 7:32pm There is a little bit of a catch 22 to this. If Glaxo made smaller doses.....would the price be any smaller? If you only received injections of 2mg instead of 6mg.....would the insurance companies still limit most people to six a month? They do with the pills, so I'm guessing they would with whatever mg shot is prescribed. I like the package of 5 vials (for a total of 15 shots per box). I like filling my own syringes. I don't want them to mess with this.....because I feel like they would fuck it up if they did. |

Title: Re: imitrax survay neaded about 1/2&1/3 dosage Post by Giovanni on Nov 6th, 2003, 1:57pm I agree with Roxy on this one. Start tampering with doses and we'll get screwed. :( |
