Title: slurred speech - strange and a bit frightening
Post by Marijke on Oct 22nd, 2003, 1:17pm
Hi all!

Well, I am still so happy that verapamil keeps the beast under control for 95%.
But I occasionally still have some heavy shadows. They are not that bad, but sometimes I really have difficulty speaking. I can't come up with the right words, and I feel like I can't think straight.

I am on verap. 480 mg and the occasional indomethacin if the shadowing gets too bad.

Any of you experienced this? It scares me, not to mention my partner.

pfdan,

Marijke

Varap screwed with my head big time. Dizzy, major head spins, anxiety and inability to think were some of the finer point. Nasty stuff if you ask me. It was after Verap that I decided NO MORE MEDS.

Good luck, hope you find a solution.

I had plenty of that, but I blamed it on the CH, not the medicine.

It comes in really handy when you're trying to meet people.  very attractive trait!  You can accessorize with a little dribble of saliva on your chin.

Slurred speech and the inability to find words is something that happens with about 70% of my headaches. After talking with others, I know I'm not the only one.
My new neurologist saw the aftermath of one CH (his nurse was there for the real thing), including the inability to speak - he didn't seem overly concerned, just interested. BTW - he seems to be well-educated in CH, so I trust his opinion.

Keep us updated, and if you get the slurred speech along with one side of your body not working, get to a hospital - it could be a stroke instead of CH problems.

Thx all!!!

Glad to know that this is just part of the beast. It is just my thinking and speaking that's not working, everything else is functioning OK. But good to mention that, Lizzie!

Phew, feel relieved

Don't mean to go against the grain here and I may be the exeption to the rule but.......

Ever since I gave up all the prescription meds, my head and thinking are clear as all get out.

Granted, I do not get hit the same way I did when I was a test rat for the neuro of the day.

Anyway, I guess its just me who had drunken dizzy side affects from meds?!?

JM,
The difference for me was that on the meds, I was slurring gibberish.
Without the meds, I think I was slurring good ideas.
(It seems to wear off after about an hour after the headache.  Short term memory returns too.)

Capiche?  (no one ever said my verbal skills ever came back.)

well, either meds (and I stay on the verapamil, better some speaking funnies than attacks) or cluster itself, just glad to know that it's just part of the beast.

I experience the slurred speech with meds, not CH alone.  When it is med-free CH, my annunciation is quite clear and no one has any doubt that I am cussing like a sailor.

Marijke,

I get the same thing withmy speech.  My wife uses it to know I am about to be hit.  Verapamil has not increased the speech problem that I can tell, but I have noticed difficulty with trying to find words while under a heavy shadow or HA.

Never noticed slurred speach due to CH ...... although, I always danced alone and cursed alone.  And I wouldn't trust my own judgement while getting hit.  Was on the verap for about 10 days and then quit ....... cycle ending.
