Title: $11.67 per minute.
Post by Miklos on Oct 20th, 2003, 11:36am
OK, I did it. I took the B24 bomber ride Saturday afternoon. I had to wait two hours for the passenger manifest to fill, and I had buyer's remorse right up until the pilot did the engine run up prior to take off. I never regretted a single moment afterwards. There were six middle-aged guys running around the cabin giggling and pointing like teenagers. Each of us got to spend five minutes on the flight deck with headphones listening to air traffic control and watch little bitty planes on VFR.

The "hostess" who ran the cargo area was a retired Air Force brigadier general.

I was not allowed to sit in the nose because that area is equipped with a .30 caliber machine gun. There is some silly rule about cluster folks not being given access to heavy weaponry when unarmed Cessnas and Pipers are in full view and within range, not to mention Southwest Airlines.

I could go on for pages, but the bottom line is that I finally got to see what it was like to fly in the plane that my Dad flew. He never talked about his war experiences much although my Mom says that when he came home after his missions, he could not hold a coffee cup without the jitters for about a month.

It was money well spent and very much enjoyed. If you have a chance for a similar experience, regardless of what the opportunity is, don't be wishy-washy as I was.

You should try Air Combat...

I have flown Air Combat 5 times now.  They actually let a goomba like me control this fighter/trainer and shoot down another plane (well, they make smoke come out of your 'kill', then you set up for another dogfight)

Nothing like it in the world.  It's like paintball for planes.  The heart must be in goooooood shape because this is intense like you can't believe.  We pulled almost 8G's on my first combat mission.  I came so close to passing out... all my vision was going black and tunneled but then I came over the top of this rolling-scissors maneuver and the blood came back into my head, thank God.  It's all on video, so I didn't want to be one of those funny pass-out scenes.

Highly enjoyable.  To say the least.  I'm pretty sure the cost/minute is lower than $11.67.  When I did it, it was about $500 for a 4 hour session that included 6 dogfights.

Glad you took our advice and had a great time as well. At least you did it. I blew my chance at something like it many years ago.  Lucky you and like you say, never pass it up.
