Title: G6PD & Cluster
Post by romain on Oct 6th, 2003, 9:56pm
Hi,

Just curious, does anyone else have Cluster Headaches and G6PD (Glucose 6 Phosphate Dyhasenase)?

G6PD is an inherited genetic disorder in which there is a low level of the G6PD enzyme in the body.  No treatment, but certain medications must be avoided otherwise hemolytic anemia can occur.

It is found primarily in men, women are carriers and pass the disorder onto their sons.  Women typically are carriers.  They can, in rare instances inherit the disorder if and only if both parents have the disorder.  Typically, people of African or Asian ancestry are at most risk, however, it does show up in all ethnic groups.

I am curious if my cluster headaches and G6PD are related.  For a while I thought it was fibromyalgia, but two professionals dismiss that.  It was not until I was seen by a doctor from India that she ordered the test.

Don't remember that ever being brought up, but stick around -- someone may have heard of it.  Don't think I have it (Please NO - not something else).

Sorry you've got something else to worry about.

Go to the archives and look it up. But I don't remember it. May be there tho - I'm old and can't remember everything.

Welcome...

Hugs BD

I don't remember it being ever brought up either.  Doubt if it is in the archives but you can go ahead and do a search and see anyway.  I have never heard of this disorder.  Sorry you have to deal with it as well as ch.

200 million people worldwide with low or no G6PD.  It's linked to oxidative stress, hypertension and diabetes in the literature.  My guess is that G6PD deficiency and clusters are quite separate, but if you have both, they might interact and aggravate each other.

Here's an article on using an antioxidant from grape seeds and pine bark for supporting G6PD deficiency - it prevents the blood cells from going kaput when exposed to chemical stress.  Pycnogenol helps with some parts of the deficiency, but does not cure it or deal with all of the problems.  (Pycnogenol is a trade name - there are many other brands of grape seed extract or proanthocyanidins that should be equally effective. Hawthorne is also a good source of this type of chemical).   And the doctors that did this research are also Indian!!

Hi Floridian,

Thanks for the info are you a doc?

G6PD is an inherited disorder you cant just catch it as many people think.  Being female, only a certain percentage of my red blood cells are affected.  Treatment is staying away from any medicines containing Asprin, Acetominaphen, Sulfa or sulfa related drugs, large doses of vitamin C.  Other than that, life is great.

That is until I was diagnosed with cluster headaches.  At least now I can tell my mom that they weren't all sinus headaches!   ;D

Just curious of there was a correlation between the two.  Thanks for the responses everyone!
