Title: O2 question...
Post by Prense on Oct 2nd, 2003, 6:48pm
I am doing the O2 thing, and I notice these two valves on the outside of the mask (either side of my nose).  It is a non-rebreather mask, but one of the valves is a one way valve, and the other side has nothing over the valve holes.  Is this the correct setup?  It felt like I was breathing air through the open side.   ???  Any help would be appreciated.

Chris

It felt like you were breathing air thru the open port because  you WERE breathing air thru the open port. Grab a hank of duct tape, and cover that puppy up.

For some odd reason, Nurse Wrachet down at my old O2 center REFUSED to let a mask out the door w/o first removing one of the diaphrams.  "Breathing all that pure oxygen is bad for you....."
She's dead now.  I had to find another O2 supplier.

Life goes on......

Chris, i got one like that a while back. I just put duct tape on the inside of it to block it off. I dont know why they are like that i guess they are just screwing with us at the med supply places. Just remember to take the strap off in case you fall asleep with it on so you dont suffocate when the 02 runs out    ..........andy

Chris,

IM your address, I got a case of non-rebreathers coming in this week.......got two people I have to send out to so its no big deal.

Tapeing the holes makes a big difference, you need to expel as fast as your sucking.

This open port on one side of the nose is called a "safety feature". It allows those who pass out while on oxygen to get still something to breath after the tank is empty.
If you breath in hard enough you can feel the air rushing in through the open holes. This is not quite in the intention of the inventor  ;).
Work around:
1) Turn up the flow rate so high that never air is sucked in --> waste of oxygen, and the reservoir bag doesn't make sense any longer.
2) Squeeze the bag gently while breathing in, so no air enters trough the open holes.
3) Close the open holes with some sticky tape.
But by far the best is:
4) Make another fully working one-way valve out of the open port: Use the rubber disk salvaged from a discarded mask or make your own disk from some thick plastic foil.

Using method 4) I get along with a flow rate of only 8 l/m, as long as I'm sitting down and don't run around.

Remember, there is a large difference between 90% and 99% oxygen, despite what the "knowledgeable" guy from the oxygen supplier says.

I was pretty sure that was the case Ueli.  While the O2 reduced the attack some, it was still there and came back strong about 10 minutes later...nothing a good stab couldn't take care of.  I was at a flow of 10 and if I covered that open side, I could definately feel a difference in breathing when inhaling.  I got the answer I needed though, and I am all set for next time.  That goodness for the trex.

Thanks for helping me out with this!   ;D
