Post by Cerberus on Sep 26th, 2003, 7:49pm
Hey Ueli?

is there any info on the effects of ginseng on CH? Pardon the modification ::) but I have more to add......oops ;D
in addition to ginseng add   Ashwaganda and Astragalus.......I been drinking SoBe drinks with this stuff in em and was wondering if there would be a trigger there as the hits are seemingly becoming more frequent. I hope not, this crap is tasty. :D

Curious,
Ramon

Ramon,
I'm not really strong on the herbal stuff. I believe if something has any merit, the pharma industry puts it into pill form and I can get it from them in controlled dosage and purity.   ;D

There are a few discussions in the archives about ginseng.
In one post our resident expert floridian suspects that ginseng might be a trigger for CH:

In another post Ted quotes a report about herbs, including ginseng, counteracting some meds we take:

Sorry, I can't help more, but I'm firm believer in "better living through pharmaceutics "   :D

Ramon:

I guess it's interesting but as Ueli says: The drug moguls wouldn't let a thing like Gensing slip by as they could no doubt clean up on the stuff in a pill form.

This is an excerpt taken from the Skeptical Inquirer about 7 or 8 years ago:

We also saw North American ginseng prominently displayed in these stores (Hong Kong) -- it is highly valued in China. Although many bold therapeutic claims are made for ginseng, its scientifically demonstrated effects are more modest. Its complex chemistry stimulates several bodily systems. Ginseng can act as a pick-me-up in a number of ways: it produces caffeinelike effects in the central nervous system, enhances carbohydrate metabolism and glycogen synthesis, and may stimulate the heart because it contains some digitalislike components (similar to those found in the common foxglove). It also has histiminic activity, and it contains steroids that can affect the hormonal system (Siegel 1979).

Kind of old information by now I suppose but interesting. The 1970s were fun.  ::)
