Title: So my boss calls me into her office yesterday.....
Post by 9erfan on Sep 9th, 2003, 12:57pm
....and says "close the door".  :o

And I'm thinking "oh crap!  I'm getting fired" because just a few hours before I had left her vm saying that I would be in late because I had had a horrible night with my head and no sleep.

Instead she tells me that she's talked to the head of HR about my headache situation so that someone besides her would know about what was going on.  The head of HR wanted to know if there was anything that they could do to accomodate me when I'm getting "attacks".  My boss actually used the word attack and I was surprised.  So I told her that the only thing I really needed was a dark conference room or office that I go could into and be by myself.

And she was like "well, we have a small conference room downstairs that no one ever uses.  Do you want to go check it out?".  So we went downstairs together and she's like "will this work for you?".  Well, of course it would!  Just a small little room with hardly any light coming in....perfect for me!

What a difference between this place and my LAST permanent job where my "boss" once said to me "you need to do something about those headaches".  Bitch!  And where the HR person at that last place once said to me "yeah, I get migraines and they are pretty bad but you know, I have a job to do so I just have to suck it up and come in..."  Kiss my ASS!

What a relief to be at a job where people care and are trying to understand what I'm going through!

V.

Are they hiring?
That's so cool that will accomodate you like that.
Does the room have padding on the walls? If not maybe you should....oh never mind, don't push it.  ;D

LOL!  No padded walls, but I guess you can't have everything!

I spend most of my time on the floor anyway.  :'(

Yeah, this is a pretty cool place to be.  Friday we are having a 3 hour picnic in the middle of the day.  Next Wednesday night, our VP is treating us to an evening at the theatre (cocktails & hors devours prior to the show).  And we have season tickets to the SF Giants so they are always giving away seats to those who want to go to games.
It took a WHOLE LOT of praying, but I'm finally in a place that I enjoy.  I truely don't want to screw it up.  It's a very busy month here and I'm just freaking out that my head is taking this opportunity to screw with me!  >:(  I gotta get through this.  Not seeing the neuro for the first time until Sept 26th.

Congrats, 9erfan!
This says a great deal about the company you work for and how they feel about their employees... but even more, it shows that you have a great work ethic - they want to accommodate you so they can keep you! Good job and congratulations!

Alas, I'm sure many of us know what you mean. My current boss (past boss - who was fantastic about this - retired) says exactly the same thing to me... "you need to do something about these headaches". unfortunately my only verbal response so far has been a "fuck off" under my breath... but in my head the response is:
"gosh, why didn't I think of that? and all along i've just been enjoying them, thinking they weren't bothering anyone... gee, if i'd only known they were inconveniencing someone, i would have tried to stop them earlier...."

Lizzie.... who's still rambling on while the DOPEamax does a job on her brain......

Added after first post:
Minor (or major) ranting..... on top of this, boss is mad (i mean MAD that I haven't bought a second car... doesn't want me to have to pick my daughter up from school ..... but it's just too bad (in his eyes) that I'm spending 30% of my take-home pay on Imitrex right now (yup.... THIRTY PERCENT).... ya see, he just bought a used Jaguar, cash, then put $35K into it to fix it up.... apparently money Does grow on trees, just not on mine.....
Why did the boss have to retire? He was SOOOO nice!! When I'd get hit repeatedly and be exhausted, he'd let me take a 20 to 30 minute nap at my desk, and even kept others away from me..... Understood when I had a bad head night and couldn't come in or came in late..... Left me alone when I had the oxygen mask on..... Why oh Why did they let an as*hole take over???
HELLO???? Yeah, no prob.... it's not as if I have 2 teenagers, graduate school tuition, massive medical bills, even more massive medication bills, mortgage, and all the other crap that comes with being an adult...... I'll just fork out $20K from my very large savings account (note: Lizzie is currently rolling on the floor in a hysterical fit of laughter) to buy a fucking car to get the boss of my back while I spend another 30% of my income on imitrex and, seeing as i have a teenager, probably about 50% of my income on FOOD (LMBO... you know what i mean if you have teenaged boys!).
Okay... rant over... I feel better...... sorta......

They delivered my oxygen last friday.... an M60 tank for at home and 4 E-tanks to take with me....thing is- there was NO way to turn the damn E tanks on!! no handle! nothing! seems they forgot to leave the little black lever thingy with me...... well, i have it now. oxygen is helping as long as i get to it fast enough. i've informed my professor that i'll be bringing it to classes with me (seeing as class is 5:30 to 8:30, and I get hit every night at 6:45 - only one i can time).

i'm babbling. blame it on everything. LOL

hugs to all,
Lizzie

(sorry 9erfan..... I really did mean to merely congratulate you... got carried away... i'll probably regret it tomorrow LOL)

Lizzie,

You may have officially lost it!  ;D hee hee.

And how can I forget.....when I got hit while at a Sales Kickoff meeting in Montreal and had to go to the ER....Took a cab by myself from the hotel and spent 5 hours there (getting no relief).  When I showed up at the meetings the next day, did my boss ask me how I was feeling?? HELL NO!  She said "yesterday was a really bad day to miss.  There was a lot of good information"!....Are you f**cking kidding me??

Thank God those days are over!

Got to be one of the best things I have heard an employer ever saying/doing!!

Give that boss a big wet Wolf slurp for me!

Well, maybe you'd better not, they might change the policy ;)

you are very lucky.

i know that i personally get really caught up in these things and after a while when people do nice things for me i am grateful, but inwardly.  sometimes they don't realize how truly happy they have made me and afterwards they may be reluctant to help me again if i don't express how i feel toward them.  i'm sure you did already, but any person who treats you like that you should stop at almost nothing to return the favor--in light of morality and ethics of course.

just a friendly reminder because i've needed that reminder several times.

congratulations!

Howdy Hoo Virgin in ya,

You scared me too. Figured I’d have to round up the boys and pay a visit to this scumbag hassling you at work. I was getting ready to reach out to our Cluster Enforcer from Boston (we call him the “Regulator”) then I read the rest of your post; I think the boys from K.C. and Wichita can handle it from here.

How cool is this!! I am so, so, so happy for you. You are a beautiful person, and truly deserve a break!!! I am modifying one of the “SHOW IN PROGRESS” lighted signs from outside a television studio door, (I snagged it when I went to a taping of “The Price is Right”) to say: “CLUSTER HEADACHE IN PROGRESS”, so that you can put it outside your downstairs room at work, and turn it on during an attack so that no one comes in. I’m with you in that regard; darkness, silence and my wish to be left alone, during a hit at work, would be my dream. People mean well, BUT DON’T TALK TO ME WHEN I AM IN THE MIDDLE OF A CLUSTER ATTACK!!!! SORRY! I KNOW YOU MEAN WELL….BUT DON’T FUCKING TALK TO ME!!!!!

I just love good news. You go girl!
David J.

P.S. Perhaps this would be a good addendum to send to Dr. Phil...Winkey Smiley Face.

Hey V

Like a lot of the above, you had me scared after I read the first line.  In the past, I've had a number of bosses that didn't understand.  Reactions I got while being hit ranged from supportive and scared to doubting and even laughing!

Currently I have a GREAT boss.  He is one of the nicest guys I've EVER met.  I can get time off when I need it (not very often) and all of the flexibility in the world.  He understands my situation and does whatever possible to help me out.  What a godsend.

Glad you are happy with your new job.
