Title: Got some advice and need some computer help!
Post by Elaine on Aug 31st, 2003, 9:43am
My advice, never buy a computer from Gateway. I got a NEW Computer on the 19th and today have not yet been able to get on line with it. They have switched out the modem and still no luck. No ony that but where it says DVD thats the CD and where it says CD its the DVD. My NEW Computer is a piece of crap. But Gateway will not let me return it they are putting me off my return day is Wenesday. If I do get to return it I have to pay a restocking fee of $150 !
I am lost I have no idea what to do here. I am in tears. I can get no higher than a surpervicer who are not very nice.
I just want to get on line. I get a error number 777 that eror says my monden isn't working. HELP!
I am headed to Gateways service department hoping to get someone to help me. I got a feeling I am screwed, I would be very thankful if anyone could help me out.
I won't be back till tonight !
Don't buy a gateway is my advice if you are looking for a good computer and good service.
Have a good day all. Someday maybe I will be able to stay on line loner ! :'( :'(

If you paid for it with a credit card, you can notify your credit card company that you bought a defective computer, Gateway won't fix it, and Gateway won't take it back without a restocking fee. If the credit card company agrees with you, they will most probably remove the charge from your account and will take their money back from Gateway. Read your credit card agreement.

If memory serves and on a Sunday morning that is an iffy proposition.
Error 777 is a DUNS problem.
Go to control panel and do a modem diagnostic.
If it comes up good.
The two most likely problems are:
You're modem isn't hearing a dial tone, this happens with digital phone lines. In your modem set-up tell it to not listen for dial tone and dial.
Your ISP does not support V.92 protocol. You'll have to deal with them.

You have an virtual modem most likely an HSP I'm betting it isn't hearing a dial tone.
Yes I know you can hear one. The modem just can't hear as well as you can with those cute ears of yours.

Tell the tech. change the init string so that the modem isn't looking for a dial tone.

Rename your drives

I hate Sundays where is that bloody mary anyway.

I use a sob story once a year with one of my cards when I screw up sending the payment on time. I have a good reputation (with them anyway)  and they forgive me the $25 or so fee. If your rep is good, they'll help you out with this, I think.

Take it back, now.

Gateway Return Policy (http://www.gateway.com/about/legal/warranties/Terms_aug02.pdf)

3. Return Policy. You may return products and cancel unused services within 15 days
after you receive your product or are invoiced for services, except that E Series systems and
server products may be returned within 30 days after you receive your product. To return products
and cancel services you must follow Gateway’s return procedures, including obtaining a return
merchandise authorization (RMA) kit and returning products within 7 days after you receive an
RMA kit. Gateway will refund the original purchase price of products, unperformed services and
related sales taxes. SHIPPING & HANDLING FEES (INCLUDING RELATED SALES TAXES)
ARE NOT REFUNDABLE. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PRODUCTS UNTIL GATEWAY
RECEIVES THEM. YOU WILL BE CHARGED SHIPPING AND HANDLING OR RESTOCKING
FEES TO RETURN PRODUCTS. Returned products must be in the same condition as you
received them. You must return all pre-loaded software with the product to obtain a refund for the
product, and you may only return pre-loaded software if you choose to return the product. You
may return other software only if the package has not been opened. THIS RETURN POLICY IS
NOT A WARRANTY. NOTE: Gateway will not accept for return any products you purchased
from a Reseller. Additional restrictions may apply on certain products purchased from the Gateway
Accessory Store. Please visit our Help pages for more information.

The customer is always right, at least in the first 15 days. GW changed their policy from 30 to 15 a few weeks ago, quietly of course.

Good Luck E

Mark

A lot of gateway horror stories are going around, Hope you can straighten out the problem, If not rather then return it send it to be fixed, unfortunaly if you have in house service they will send you a shipping box, so I don't know if you have regular service. The dvd/cdrom is probably windows problem and a easy fix.

I would return it, even if you have to pay $150. I have never heard anything good from several Gateway users I personally know. They are a piece of junk. Better off with at least a Dell...HP is good too. Circuit City has a great rep for excellent customer service. So if you have one around, go buy your PC local..this way any problems...you can bring it in. Good luck Elaine.

Don't you have any consumer protection legislation at all over there?
Here, what Gateway are doing would be illegal i.e. if they have sold you something that is not fit for its purpose they are legally obliged to refund or replace it.
