Everyone who holds stock got the same % tax break, not just the CEO's. When you want to change that across the board fairness and portray it as unfair, you switch to looking at units (re $) and cry that he got so many more $ than me. Of course he did, he had a lot more $ invested than you did. I watched with great amusement, this play out in the Bush v Gore debates, over and over again. Give everyone a 5% tax cut. Sounds fair to me. Same across the board. But some jerk will hollar that a guy who pays $1 million in taxes every year gets a $50,000 tax cut while this guy who only pays $10,000 a year in taxes only gets a $500 tax cut. Keep it apples and apples. |

You could never do better than breaking even and no one would play it. The other point is if we want to do a non-productive... I mean nonprogressive tax system let's just do it. Let's give them the purse too and when someone making 5 billion dollars pays $5000 in txes and someone making $5 thousan pays .50 cents, and our parents die of pneumonia, kids can't spell "cents" etc... we can THEN get this country back on track by telling Bill Gates he might want to consider his billions ain't doing anyone any good and since he can afford it he should maybe put in more. After all, it WAS our tax dollars that let him get so rich. Same with Perot. He STOLE our tax dollars, exploited the R&D that came from it, and then said he figured it all out alone. But after taking our money from taxes and R&D and claiming his wealth, he should pay the same money that he breaks the back off of a worker to make him even more per year. Our tax dollars made him rich and we should now subsidize him more. |

Post by Bob P on Aug 14th, 2003, 9:26am All I know is that my Harley Davidson stock has paid me quarterly dividends and at the same time increased 8 times what I paid for it (this includes 2 ea. 2 for 1 splits). I've never seen my stock drop in value when a dividend is paid. In fact, it usually goes up because the dividend is an indication of a strong, healthy company with good earnings. |

OK, then what good is getting a dividend if you make no money off of it? Your share is $30 before and $28 plus $2 dividend after. Big deal. If you had 100 shares for $3000 before and 100 shares for $2800 and $200 dividend after, what's the point. You'd be just as well off selling a few shares if you need the cash. And before and after the new tax law, you would be BETTER off with the capital gain than you would the dividend because the later would be taxed at a higher rate (before and after the new tax law).
