Title: What is sleep? I hear rumours about it but...
Post by Carl_D on Aug 4th, 2003, 1:18pm
Long before I began getting clusters at age 17, I developed insomnia. As a child I was very hyper, and the doc said I had ADD and needed to be medicated. My fathers response was, "No doctors gonna put my kid on drugs." So, I never was.
As the years have passed, my insomnia has grown much worse to the point I finally told my doc, "Look. One of these days my heart is gonna say 'if you don't stop, I WILL'." That is when he began to take my sleep disorder serious, and he put me on Zyprexa, Remeron and Amitrityline.
One condition that has added to my trouble is I have what is known as "restless limb disorder'. Since I was little I have had this, but only a couple of years ago found out what it is called. It is not painful, but my legs just get very uncomfortable, and I wiggle them alot until I fall asleep. Alot of times through the day, my legs are always moving. Friends used to make fun of me because of it, and I'd just tell them I am possessed by the ghost of Elvis from the waist down.
My question is, does anyone else have restless limb disorder? My reason for asking is, it could be poor circulation. Clusters could also (I know, I am a broken record) be a circulatory condition which brings me back to wondering if maybe the head is suffering the symptom of an underlying condition elsewhere...like the heart. Again, just speculatory thinking.

Peace,
Carl D

Carl..I have restless leg syndrone.....really freaky.....my calve looks like it has fetus's in them crawling and squirming around like in an animals belly due to have multiple births. Alot of people have it.....I also was rather hyper when young and suffer from insomnia since a kid.....I am a nervous sort.......tend to be very uptight....and think alot of it goes hand in hand. I'm on neurontin rite now and it has really helped....more or less it has been warding off horrible meegraines (sorry folks) due to the muscle spam's in my neck and bad disks thru out my spine ect ect ect that goes with that mess.....I couldn't tolerate amitriptylin......blahhhhh ! I don't think it is life threatening tho and the insomnia sucks but don't think it will shorten your life....ambien is the best thing I ever took for insomnia but my doc only allows 20 a month which means 10 nites no sleep so I take halves of them each nite and get at least 2 hours or so and ever so many days I take a whole tab to catch up on sleep. I like how I don't feel groggy or dopey with it in the mornings. Good luck to you........Pam that is so much of a night owl that I irritate Brad with it  :-/

Hi.  My second post here.  I too have insomnia.  I do something very similar to verndy...the awake for 3 days then sleep all of the next.  The pain is a definite factor and I only sleep when exhaustion takes over.

My physician put me on Ambien, and that has helped tremendously.  One pill and I "can't" stay awake...even if a bomb went off in my room.

Verndy,
This is how I deal with sleep. During a cycle I sleep propped up high on pillows to stop almost all of my 2 am CH's. Sleeping flat is an invention to pain. Second I discovered that if I limit my sleep to 5 hours I will miss my 6:30 CH. For me sleeping 5 hours a night cures any insomnia I may get during a cycle. CH messes up many of your systems and sleep is definitely one of them. It sounds like you may be starting a cycle but sometimes I get faint symptoms that just go away in a few days.

Hope this helps.

Paul

When I'm in a good episode, there is no sleep cycle.

If I fall asleep at 10 pm exhausted, I'll wake up at 10:15 pm refreshed and ready to go.  Now what?  So I get a lot of work done in the middle of the night.

When the episode is over, the ability to sleep comes back.  It comes back quicker if I jumpstart the process with Melatonin.

"I couldn't tolerate amitriptylin."  I couldn't either.

Do you have ever tried Melatonin? I use regularly Melatonin, helps me sleeping when I'm in cluster!
