Title: Combination of Spray and Injector!
Post by Patrick_A on Aug 1st, 2003, 5:22am
I hope somebody looks into this.
I busted open a nasal spray after i had used it because i was curious as to how it worked, and was also curious if i could somehow make 2 sprays out of 1. Its a pretty cool mechanism. In fact ya can see where a lot of the cost is kicked in!
I don't think it is possible to make 2 sprays but it got me to wondering. A spray is 20mg and a shot is 6mg. Now the magical question ( please dont beat me Don)
Is the medicine inside the spray the exact same formulation as is in the injector? For all you that get unlimited imitrex, this question aint for you! But wouldnt it work better if you could take the medicine out of the spray and use it for the injector. I guess what i am saying is this.... You are cheating the injector to get an extra shot. (3mgs instead) If you could somehow get the medicine out of the spray, you'd have about 7 doses for your injector!
I am suffering because my Insurance refuses to up my meds. Get this, The say Imitrex is for migraines and not Ch's. They say Glaxco doesnt encourage the use of imitrex with Ch, so therefore they will only give me what a Migraine sufferer is getting. I am gonna fugg them sumbitches though. When my cycle ends, i am gonna keep on filling my prescriptions. I am gonna hoard me about 50 sprays and 50 pills for future cycles. Fugg them arseholes!

No they are not the same. The nasal spray contains the same drug, but also is in a solution containing "monobasic potassium phosphate NF, anhydrous dibasic sodium phosphate USP, sulfuric acid NF, sodium hydroxide NF, and purified water USP".
Not something you want to be injecting.

Patrick,

I finally got my first persription filled for the spray.  Have the same issue with my insurance.  They only will cover 6 sprays and the script cannot be refilled for 30 days.  Talk about a bummer!  >:(

I'm also finishing up on a cycle and thought about refilling the perscription every 30 days to stock up.  I guess I ought to check the expiration date on them before buying too many.  Expensive little buggers, aren't they!?

I know people have talked about using the injectors way past the exp date without potency problems, but I am not sure if anyone has posted the same results for the spray.

What we need here is a clusterhead Chemist who know how to extract the sumatriptin from the tablets and inhalers.  ;D

I don't use the spray so I'm not much help in that area.

One thing I ask my doc to always do is write the Rx for 3 injections with many refills.  That way the insurance company reads that as one set (which is actually 6 shots) and then I have my refills (that are all also 6 shots).  Gosh I think I confused myself here - did that make sense to anyone  ???

Hey Andy, Learned this my last cycle. Tell you Doc to prescribe your medicine as 2 sprays a day as needed for CH and INS will double the amount they will give you. I go back to a new Neuro in 2 weeks and i am going to ask him to rewrite my script to say....8 sprays a day as needed....lmfao

Patrick,

I'm puzzled by this:

I am suffering because my Insurance refuses to up my meds. Get this, The say Imitrex is for migraines and not Ch's. They say Glaxco doesnt encourage the use of imitrex with Ch, so therefore they will only give me what a Migraine sufferer is getting

In the UK the box for the injectors clearly states "for migraine and cluster headaches". Is that not the case in the States?

Here's the prescribing information for the US: http://us.gsk.com/products/assets/us_imitrex_injection.pdf On page seven, it plainly states that it is for clusters. Note too that it doesn't say anything about a two per month limit (two per day is the recommended limit).

Patrick- print it out and shove it under their noses.

Hey all, I am just starting to deal with all of these people. My plan administrator is the one who told me that Merck-Medco said that Glaxco told her that Imitrex wasnt specifically formulated for CH's. Of course now it is a he said/she said thing. I cannot actually talk to the Merck-Medco people. You know i truly dont care, Just give me my drugs and i'll go sit in the corner and STFU!

Axed my other Neuro today, I now have an appointment with a Neuro supposedly familiar with Ch's. We'll see!
