Title: Fall, Tailgating, College, and Drunkeness Post by Brian_Y on Jul 31st, 2003, 7:45am Some of the thoughts of football on my Death-to-the-New-York-Yankees thread got me to thinking...Down here (the South) we have this tradition on game day called tailgating. Pack the car (preferably the SUV or station wagon) full of food, booze, grill, food, booze, booze, and booze and then you get to the stadium when the first light hits the horizon (even if the game is that night) and you proceed to consume it all. Wearing navy blazers and repp ties is not uncommon. O yeah, then you go to the game later. Most likely under the influence with the flask in tow. Anyone got any good tailgating stories we can share as college football rounds the bend? What's your alma mater? Me? University of South Carolina and the University of Iowa (where they don't tailgate...heathens) I have a few, but I'd like to hear some of y'all's. BTW, last night, I stood out in my backyard and could hear from a high school a mile or two away, drums beating and the trumpets blaring. They was practicin'. When we don't go to the Chief's games due to the extreme cost of the tickets (Bastards) we just hang on the deck, make lots of noise, BBQ, eat, drink and then go inside to watch the game to keep from freezing to death. Just around the corner -- can't wait. |

Huh........they say if the drinkin is not out in the open 'they may let it go'. What's next.....proabition ! I'm sure !!! Pam that used to love them parties but is paranoid of jail now :-/ |

I had a whiskey sour and a bagel for b'fast. That was the beginning of strange times. Carolina was playing Marshall. Well, after 8+ hours of drinking and eating chicken wings, we go to the game. I had a flask of vodka in my blazer pocket. Ugliness ensued. Carolina lost. To Marshall!!! After the game, we needed to drink more as we were sobering up. Some inbred crackers from West Virginia came by and started talkin' shite to us. More ugliness. I never bitch slapped a redneck before. It was COOL!! I told him: "Boy, you sure got a purty mouth". **POW** I got cut off by the bartender. Fucker. |

I guess I won't hold that against you ... one of my best friends got his PhD at SC and we (wifey & I) used to visit them down in Columbia often. The Hawkeye part ... well, that's another story. Me, I'm a Badger and yes, Wisconsin does tailgate. It's actually not an option ... more of a requirement. Tailgate the Packer game ... the Badgers ... the Brewers (who R they?) Actually, I think that whenver 3 or more cheeseheads get together a tailgate is required by law. :) Also, tailgating is not "real" if you don't have at least a dozen brats boiling in beer and another dozen grilling over the coals. He goes to Lambeau at least once a year (he's from Wisconsin) and he told me about the most AWESOME tailgating tales. Said there is this polka band that goes around playing and they put a bucket down while they play, but yr supposed to fill it up with beer. Love that story. THAT'S tailgating!!! As for Iowa, yeah, I did my MA there. LOVE the Hawkeyes, but I am a southerner and I bleed garnet and black. We do tailgating right down here, n'est-ce pas? |
